Re: Costa Concordia

I thought everyone operating a vessel knew when you screw up you are responsible for getting everyone to/off safely. I learned that lesson from my dad while operating a johnboat for the 1st time, I was probably six years old. This guy should get more time for abandoning his ship before everyone gets off than for the time he gets for manslaughter. Might send a message.

Re: Costa Concordia

I saw a report that the Capt. went off course to allow a crew member to wave at his familiy on the island. Who knows what really happened.

"Salute" doesn't necessarily mean wave. Understood it to be a sounding of the ships horn(s) when passing near to shore. With all the lights on board, plus the horn, it would be pretty clear what their intentions were, even after dark.

Re: Costa Concordia

To make matters worse, there are 22 still missing and from last reports the ship is starting to slide into deeper water. The rescue efforts are being suspended until they know what the ship is doing.

It's obvious when you see the AIS track of the ship, that the Capt. was playing games. Some reports are/were saying the ship hit a reef X miles south of where she came to rest, and was 4 miles off course when that happened. There is good evidence that the ship was going to go off it's intended course to do the salute, and well, the rest is history.

The Daily Mail has had some excellent coverage on this. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2087126/Costa-Concordia-captain-Francesco-Schettino-Facebook-anger-Italys-hated-man.html

Re: Costa Concordia

This was reported today, from a hearing before a judge.

Italian media also quote him as telling the judge he had left the ship accidentally after tripping and falling into a rescue craft.

No way he said that!

I wouldn't let my 5 year old get away with saying something so ridiculous.

I am going to believe just about anything at this point.

De Falco: "And what? You want go home, Schettino? It's dark and you want to go home? Get on that prow of the boat using the rope ladder and tell me what can be done, how many people there are and what they need. Now!"

Wasn't it reported he got to the coast wrapped in a blanket and caught a cab?

Re: Costa Concordia

What i want to know is did the water tight door failed? There are security build into these new mega ships. They tried to prevent accident like that of 'Titanic'. Those water tight door are control at the bridge with the Safety Captain and the Captain accessing the damage to the ship. If those doors are in operation then water intrusion can be contained to those bulkhead that are affected. Now we will never know what really happen as these reports will never be publish.
