Re: Costa Concordia

Prosecutors are upset that the judge ordered house arrest. I think house arrest was most appropriate. Imagine being locked in with the family as the whole world discusses his dinner date with the hot blonde who is less than half his age. His ability to make a living at sea is gone. Home with the wife and kid is exactly where he needs to be.

Nah, no big deal! Extra-marital affairs in Italy are quite common. Two out of three Italian films revolve around one of the spouses messing around. Now here is were you are right, having a mistress on the side is ok, just as long as the income is still coming in! Go figure.

How many of us would like to be the guy on the lifeboat that had to push the crew aside when it became obvious the kitchen help didn't know how.

Re: Costa Concordia

There is a story about Winston Churchill that sort of fits =>

After his retirement, Churchill was cruising the Mediterranean on an Italian cruise liner and some Italian journalists asked why an ex-British Prime Minister should chose an Italian ship.

"There are three things I like about being on an Italian cruise ship," said Churchill.

"Yes?" said the journalists.

"First, their cuisine is unsurpassed."

"Oh yes!" agreed everyone within earshot.

"Second, their service is superb!"

"Indeed!" said the gathering crowd, all smiles.
"And the third?" urged the closest newspaperman.

"Well," Churchill said, "in time of emergency, there is none of this nonsense about women and children first!":facepalm:

I'm not saying that the "I was just following orders" excuse is valid. But that excuse helps explain what he did better.
Something just does not add up to me. That explanation just helps fill in some gaps as to how and why the captain did this.
but he was still dead wrong.

Re: Costa Concordia

So Italian authorities have recorded phone conversations between Capt Scettino and his friends saying "When I understood the ship was listing, I upped and left." Also the last crew member off the boat after assisting passengers was the hair dresser!

Re: Costa Concordia

He did not "have to take it anyway". That is/was one of his prime duties as a Captain....to make sound decisions. The "I was just following orders" defense doesn't cut it.
If he intentionally put his passengers, crew, and ship in harm's way, why would it surprise you that he would then pull the ripcord?

I didn't put it in my post, but the linked article said he was supposed to pass by at half a mile (nautical) and instead passed at .28 mile. Don't know if that was on purpose or just more of the dumb. .29 might have got him by.

Re: Costa Concordia

I know when you captain a cruise ship, dealing with tourists every day can kinda get on your nerves. Like you just get tired of answering the same questions every week, and you kinda feel like you are hearding cattle around.
I know when i have done touristy things, you feel like an animal getting hearded around.
So maybe somehow he looked at them as less then human, and the only thing that matters is my life.
and when the ship started listing, he figured "I'm not gonna die for these people."

He claimed the obstruction wasn't on the chart. just because it isn't on the chart doesn't mean it isn't there.

Re: How the heck . . .

Yesterday . . . I came across a couple of videos based on the GPS tracking data of the Costa Concordia.

Here is a link (below) to the page . . . there is a 'map' version and a "3D" version (look for the "wmv" files on the page). It also shows the 'fly-by' that they did in August. Pretty amazing that they would do such a thing with a cruise ship. It almost looks like they realized they were too close at the last moments and then bounced off the rock.

Looking at the 3D video, it seems clear that the ship lost propulsion upon hitting the rock ledge and continued to drift toward, and then slightly past, the harbor. It seems that they used bow and stern thrusters to maneuver the ship toward shore where it eventually grounded. I guess the knew they were in big trouble, too bad that they initially did not want to admit it.

Re: How the heck . . .

so is the ship just going to sit where it lies forever?
or will they try and move it and salvage it?

It seems like there is not much you can do, since a big ship can't get near it due to the rocks. And anything that can is too small to do any good.
I saw a video of a cargo ship beached, that was there for about a year. Still sitting there full of containers.

Re: Costa Concordia

at last, i heard they were trying to remove the fuel.

a ship of that cost will be covered by insurance.

the damage on that ship will be minimal, an easy re float and re fit. (compairitively speaking)

it will take time to seal the holes and re float the ship

They can refloat it, but who would want to cruise on it ever again? It would be like buying a home that someone just got murdered in imo. Won't find me sailing on her.

Looking at the AIS chart you can clearly see the bit of the world he struck.
Why wouldn't that be on a the charts Captain Chaos used?

Having said that, if it were on his charts then why did he hit it:confused:
