Re: How the heck . . .

Having a full complement of the latest, most accurate electronics and charts becomes a disadvantage when the humans, who are supposed to respond to what those things say, get complacent. . ."There is no way, with all this wonderful gear, that I can run aground."

The location of the vessel in the pix is where the Captain deliberately took her to facilitate quick, safe evacuation. It is not where the initial impact occurred. It is not known, only theorized, exactly what the ship hit, or exactly where.

Many cruise vessels look topheavy to me, and with many tons of humanity rushing about instability seems likely.

Re: How the heck . . .

Jeeze... that Air France plane that went missing and took forever to find the black box... well, all the technology in the world couldn't stop one co-pilot from pulling back on the control non-stop for several minutes.... despite stall warnings on top of stall warnings. WHOOOP-STALL-WHOOOOP-STALL- followed by directions on how to stop the stall (like, um, push forward please).

Initially, no one of the crew wanted to wake the sleeping captain, and no one asked the co-pilot just what the heck he'd been doing for several straight minutes as he kept the stick pulled back (which is located to the side, so no one could see it). STALL -- push forward -- STALL! STALL! For the love of god, man, STALL! << I am embellishing now.

So, one massive human error compounded by social issues (geeze, I don't want to offend the copilot and ask if he ever pushed forward on the controls and I don't want to bug the pilot, even though we are plummeting to death).

So... who knows.... but it'll be interesting and a few people will have done things that will leave everyone scratching their heads. The human-to-human issues might be the most telling.

Re: How the heck . . .

You guys are all saying what I was trying to say. I get the technology and it should not have happened ... but people make mistakes, get complacent, etc. I would still rather a seasoned pilot or captain get me out of a jam than a computer, however ... but a human might be more likely to get me in the jam. Does that make sense?

my deepest apology to Puddle jumper about zapping his post....he brought up a very similar circumstance that is very close to this one
local
Thats OK

The one good thing that came out of the Queen of the North sinking was the local people when hearing about the crash came regardless of harm to help in there own boats

Looks like the Captain left the scene of an accident. Just as with an auto, 'cause you have a license doesn't mean you are capable of driving and the responsibilities that go with it.

I'm guilty of acting foolish recreational boating and on my own time,.....but there needs to be a professional side. The Captain should have never left that vessel. He should still be there! Maybe they should have escorted him back to the ship till all bodies are discovered, then do what they want criminally.

I know I'm passing judgement, but a fact remains. Why is he not on that ship and in jail? It doesn't appear anybody pulled him off at this time.

Now this actually makes sense. I know it's speculation, but it would at least explain how all of the available information may have been ignored.

Authorities were evaluating the hypothesis that the captain had steered the ship too close to the island to take a “bow” or salute the residents of the island, an apparently common practice by cruise ships, according to news reports. - LA Times

Re: How the heck . . .

That would explain alot. I have seen those huge cruze ships do that up here but there are markers that they have to follow as the paasage is narrow.

I don't think this has been mentioned yet, but the Captain and First Mate have been arrested for suspected attempted manslaughter and abandoning ship.

As they should be! I've been on 3 cruises and I quickly marked Costa off the list after doing a little research.

Even more ridiculous is the fact that now 2 of my neighbors are missing. I am from the White Bear Lake, MN area. I sure hope things turn for the positive but it's not looking good.

What a disaster!...maybe they'll eventually drag that ship out to deeper water and scuttle it for an artifcial reef?....Don't guess it's salvageable?

I think they should patch it up and right it, tow it around off North Africa, and use it to catch pirates like they do w car theives and bait cars!

Re: Costa Cruise ship partially sinks after hitting rocks

I read one report that said the cause was "too heavily relying on electronic navigation aids and poor judgement." Guess that just about covers everything!
