Sanded out the fairing compound and added a second layer.

I also installed the steering ram.

It needed cleaned up good, and flushed. All the old fluid has been expelled.

It was a hot one today, but sand I did. Started out sanding the polyester based fairing compound. It was close, but still had some voids. So I started the seemingly never ending cycle of Bondo, sand, vacuum; Bondo, sand, vacuum. And got it really close today.

It may not look like much, (except septic tank camo???), but trust me, it's as smooth as a baby's butt. The corners were an absolute pain in the buttocks.

I want a factory gel coat bow look when this is all said and done. I don't want carpet in the bow. I used 3/4" conduit couplers to get the radius in the corners. I used Bondo to clean up the curves which all had to be hand sanded. It's real difficult to see the radius in these photos.

My wife and daughter painted the bench. I think it needs a third coat.

Just a quick update. First coat of gel is down. I am really happy with the results. I am using 1/4" nap smooth surface rollers to lay it down. The inside and outside corners look great. All that fairing paid off.

Coats 3 and 4.

Also tightened up the hole that the fuel fill tube and vent pass through. The idea is that if water gets on the seat bases, it doesn't follow the hoses into the foam cavity.

I think they should send some boat builders from boat factories to your garage. Just to learn how to build boats and get them look good lol!

Those walls there from the console to the new Gel coat. You have that rough edge. Are you going to leave that or are you going to apply some kind of molding? Maybe router off the edge from the console?

Where did you get the 1/4" nap smooth surface rollers from and what brand if possible?

Thanks

There is a vinyl upholstered pad that will cover the edge. It will all be hidden.

I got them at Home Depot. I searched Lowes to no avail. These are really decent rollers that do not shed. So far I've been pleased with the results. The gel coat lays down pretty low. The finish is more of an orange peel, as opposed to a rough surface that a higher nap roller would produce.

Are you going to use some kind of non-skid or are you going to cover with carpet? What is your final plan there? I think I have decided on Seagrass. That is what they are using on many of the new boat decks.

I am going to leave the bow area gelcoat. The roller I am using is leaving an orange peel texture. It's really the best way I can explain it. I'm planning on leaving it as is for now. I may sand and polish the sides to a smooth high gloss finish at some point. This is the reason for so many coats. I want it thick in case I decide the orange peel texture is too hard to keep clean. At this point I like the texture. I will transition to carpet right at the end of the side panels, under the storage hatch. It will be carpet from the hatch to the bench.

Most Excellent Work Sir Chuck! Looking really good! I thought I was being productive fixing a few dings on my hull with the Spectrum Gel coat...My work pales in comparison.

Huge day today. My friend Brandon came over to give me a hand installing the motor. I set up my gantry crane and got the motor under it. While the motor was up, I installed the remote drain tube and added fresh oil and a filter. Then it was time for the big lift...

I'm whipped. I got a few other odds and ends started, more tomorrow.
