I bought a used 2T engine hoist and I can check the base carefully. It seems that I have to rebuilt the base. Fibreglass job. Can I DYI?
Yes you can do it but you need to check also the stringers and transom while the engines out if your engine mount is rotted probably due to the age of the boat there is rot else where

If you look in the restoration forum on here you will see people doing these repairs

go to the restoration forum. open the 4th sticky down. read the threads on links 14, 15, 18, 2, 3, 4a, and 4b in their entirety. watch every video.

then after that, you will have the information you need to do the job yourself.

the front engine crossmember rotting would most often be after stringers and transom got wet and rotted.

First thing is to determine the extent of the rot. Drill test holes in lower transom and stringers as well as the front mount crossmember. If the wood comes out clean, fill the hole with 3M 5200. If the wood comes out mushy, you keep on drilling further and looking at the shavings.

Oak is usually a poor choice for anything that might get wet. It rots pretty quick even though a hardwood.

Depends on which type of oak. White oak is good for marine use but red oak is probably one of the worst woods you could use, it soaks water like a sponge. No matter what wood you use it needs to be done correctly or you will be doing this again real soon. Take your time and do it once!

You should stop. It won't work. Get the right wood...

That ring is for the Gen II drives (1991 and later). You have an Alpha One (up to 1991), no retaining ring, it uses a large 'hose clamp'...

If you are replacing the gimbal bearing seal, then yes, you use the seal installer tool...

I don't see 'Merc service manual #6' on that list. Have you got yourself a genuine manual yet?

Although many on here don't need the manual, many do. Most of us have learned either from the manual, or the expense of not having one. Yes, get the manual, and still ask questions. Nothing gets you where you need to be without said questions. We all make mistakes, and correct them at a cost. If I had a penny.....

I have rebuilt the engine base. I have applied the wrong wood. But I just keep it. Later I can do it again after it is rotten.

Also Can I apply the trailer bearing grease to replace the spline grease?

You can do what you want...you'll be replacing the coupler in a year or 2 anyways after that rots.
