It looks like he's just using a steel bar between two of the bolt heads on the water pump pulley. If you don't want to do that, I'd recommend using something like the ProForm Crankshaft turning tool. It bolts to the harmonic balancer and gives you a hex or square drive so you can safely turn the engine over.

Take the spark plugs out you will be able to turn it by hand on the pulley.

You need to go through retiming your engine with a timing light. Need to bring engine to TDC on compression stroke (both valves closed) on #1 cylinder. Turn distributor so that rotor points to number one post on cap. that should get you in the ballpark to start the engine if done correctly. Once running use a timing light to get it set. Timing is usually on sticker on engine or flame arrestor cover

Do you know what ignition system you have on it - if you have points it is fairly simple if you have a later Delco EST you need to put it in base mode to set the timing.

You can find some youtube videos on this

Thank you. I have rotated the engine to the 0 point.
Ayuh,...... That zero could be Tdc, compression, or Tdc exhaust, so you have to be Sure it's Tdc on the compression stroke, not the exhaust stroke,.....
Otherwise, it won't start, nor run,....

How can I turn on my motor if I miss my key on the lake? I watched video on the youtube and it showed that I should connect the redline pole and yellow line pole by a wire then motor will start.

You're using non-genuine bellows. That is why you're having trouble putting them on. I used GLM bellows ONCE, never ever again. I always install anything made of rubber as genuine Merc. Bellows and impellers... Always genuine.

Hi Archris,

I am trying to buy genuine bellows for mercruiser alpha one and gen I.
Could you please suggest which product are genuine? Could you please give me a link? Normally I prefer shopping in Amazon.ca.

Thank you

Quicksilver parts are the real thing. Anything else is not. You pay more but it’s better than doing it twice.

You will only get Mercruiser parts from your dealer or a dealer with an on-line presence. Not Amazon

Amazon does sell quicksilver parts, but also a ton of junk. Ebay is another place, same caveat.

The power tilt cannot work correctly. It can let outdrive down but cannot pull the outdrive up. Which part is bad?

Anyone can help me check again this gimbal bearing had hole or not? At that time I could not find a hole for grease filling, now I tried to fill the grease. and attached file is what I saw. You can click the link to see the detail of the gimbal bearing I bought 2 years ago. Maybe I have to pull it out and check it again to ensure I install the gimbal bearing correctly.

yes Quicksilver is OEM and the bearing will be sealed. Should have come with a pipe plug to replace the grease nipple in the transom housing

Quicksilver is same parts as Mercury/Mercruiser , just different branding so they can sell them outside of their dealer network.
Should I do any maintain for the sealed bearing. I tried to turn it by my hand and felt it is not very smoothy while turning
