Agree ^^^^^ but nutters run this stuff. Any silt bypass Tunnel is a complete boondoggle. That's why they'll probably get it done  Someone needs to ban me

For Throwback Thursday:

Boulder Beach Campground, April, 1955

Cool pic! (once again! :thumb:)

The kids and I ran by there this weekend and those trees sure do look like they have 60 years of growth on them.

Something I noticed that would NEVER fly in this day and age, they "oiled" the road going around the campground. Any of you remember "oiled roads"?

Agree with all except the ban part.

Looking into tunnel accessory products to see if they have sufficient reps in the southwest.....:watermelon:

That big metal thingy looks like a pump impeller to me.

Impeller for?

Impeller isn't the technical term, but close enough.

(Pretty descriptive pic title, eh? :D)

Geez yes I remember the oiling of the roads. Today you can't bring any foreign landscaping or even clean new gravel to put around your lot if it's in the park, much less oiling down the roads

Is that a water intake?^^

Looks like the big metal thingy being towed in the Chevy Silverado commercials driving to the dam for an emergency part replacement.

From a Post by NPS LMNRA:

Hike Historic Railroad Trail March 16
Travel back in time on the Historic Railroad Trail and learn about the formation of the unique landscape around Lake Mead. This is a story of fire and water and the forces that shaped the area, including how people used the landscape to build Hoover Dam and create the lake. To register for this Lake Mead Institute Discovery Series event, call 702-293-8990.

QC, that's pretty darn close, but what's it for?

Funny you mention the GMC truck add, why would they haul one of those with a pickup? :der: Those big metal thingy's weight somewhere in the neighborhood of 34 tons :scared:

That's where my kids and I were at when I took the pic of the "big metal thingy"..... (we finally made it out there, cool hike)

Hey FD, isn't that in the water flow from the outlet to spin the turbine generators? :yield:

:first: And we have a winner! It's a turbine, part of a hoover dam generator that gets pushed by water. The turbines are massive, about 15' across and 4' high.

They had a dozen of them laying out in the desert along the old railroad hiking trail that 12V mentioned a couple posts back. The turbines were of different ages as some of them looked really old and rusted up, others had been repaired, then a couple that were brand spanking new like the one I posted.

If you haven't walked across the bypass bridge, do it, it's pretty darn cool. (I've probably driven across the bridge 100 times, and only visited the walkway after hiking 4 miles ) Here are a couple of pics...

Yeah, knew that, but was having fun with thingy stuff. A little tip for the use of these words. A turbocharger has a "turbine" wheel and it is driven by the exhaust gasses and turns a shaft. The dam has generators that are turned by the turbines which are driven by water. An impeller is driven by something else, (motor, engine, turbine etc.) and it sucks in stuff and squirts it out. On a Turbo, the "cold side" is called the compressor wheel, but it is an impeller too. It sucks in air and squirts it into the engine.

Could have used windget, tingamabob or do-hickey, but "thingy" sounded funnier :D

I like you're description better: :thumb: the generator is being pushed by the turbine.

Dan, do you have to walk 4 miles to get to the by-pass walk way?

I can answer this. You get off at the Hoover Dam exit after the casino and drive over to the lot by the bridge. The walk is not that far, maybe 500 ft. It's farther across the bridge than it is to get to it.

"ME" yes... Normal people, no.

(We made a side-trip to the by-pass bridge, while hiking the old railroad trail all the way to Hoover Dam.)

Howdy jj, I'm not sure how much the Las Vegas Wash contributes to or how much Lake Las Vegas takes away from Lake Mead. I searched and couldn't find much info. I wouldn't think that there is a negative effect on the big lake but I could be wrong.

Hi Sam60, good to hear from you with a little personal touch. There isn't going to be much to find out about this, like when there was 2 gators in government wash years ago. But I assure you as I sat at las vegas bay and they built lake las vegas the water slowed big time there,as for the lake las vegas its full I think even with little visitors.sucked as I looked up toward the dam they were building to contain it.
