How do you think this is going to affect Mead this year?
Although that sounds like a lot of water, it is only 1.5% of the total amount that is supposed to flow into Lake Mead this year. It does seem kinda dumb to do this in this particular year though.Another article said it's 34 billion gallons of water, 104,000 acre feet, or about 1/3 of what Nevada is alotted form the Colorado River each year.

Also, its unclear whether they are actually using more water overall. They just want to do a flood experiment. Maybe they make up for the huge release by slowing it down to compensate for it later.
As far as I know, we also still owe Mexico a lot of water that we have held in storage in Lake Mead until damage they had to their water storage from that earthquake a couple years back could be repaired.

They made the decision to alter the flow years and years ago. No way to undo it unless we build six (more) silt tunnels (under discussion).
