Swap smoking with Calories for example.

Just dropped off some tools with a good friend today.
He is 6 foot 3 inches and over 450 lbs.

What is the next law?
We walk into together at a Micky D's and order two Big Macs
He is told by the Calorie Police that "he" can only order a salad and Fish?

This wasn't meant to be a smoker vrs non-smokers post.

It was about stupid laws...smoking just being one of them.

But flame on people.
I say ban camp fires, in camp grounds and make forest fires illegal.!

Yup, that ought to work! 8)

Does no one here get the fact that there is a HUGE fundamental difference between smoking bans and trans fat bans?

I agree trans fats bans are incredibly dumb. That is 100% about personal responsibility..........but does the person next to me eating a cheeseburger in turn make me fatter? Does it negatively affect my health? No it certainly does it. Even trying to compare these types of laws is just a fruitless endevour.

Pony, what about those really greasy cheeseburgers? Isn't there a possibility that as Mister McLardo bites into one, grease may squirt out and get on your new shirt?

Our state's Attorney General was in the lead when it came to suing big tobacco. It made national headlines and other states followed his lead. He got $1.6 Billion to be spent on related programs. What happened to the money? REPUBLICANS!!! The pathetic excuse for a Governor we had at the time was so incredibly fiscally irresponsible that he stole that money from the settlement to pay for his and his predecessor's idiocy. Lucky Bloody Us!

Incidentally, the Attorney General is now our Governor. The joker he replaced lost largely on this issue alone, although he was incompetent enough to lose for any of a multitude of reasons. Scott McCallum ... What A Buffoon!

One the one hand, it was bad to use the money to balance the budget for one year but leave the underlying budget problem unsolved. But I think it was still better than wasting it on billboards that say "Smoking bad! You die!" Well duh! We don't know this already?

As far as the Governor, our current one is even worse than McCallum. McCallum wouldn't cut spending but at least he wouldn't raise taxes either. This one ran for re-election saying he wouldn't raise taxes. Then 2 months after being sworn in he presents a budget with $1.8 BILLION in tax increases. Hold onto your wallets Wisconsin, Jim "The Taxman" Doyle is coming for you.

No WBW I did't vote for McCallum. I voted for Ed Thompson, Libertarian, in 04. 8)

Re: Belmont CA a Stupid town in a Stupid state

There is a similar bill up for vote here in MD (could be early next week) that the Gov says he will sign if it passes Legislature - it concerns bars & restaurants statewide.

I'm kinda stuck in the middle again here. I personally don't care for the smell of a burning cig or stogie while I'm eating, so a total ban would apparently be of benefit to me. But do I think that second hand smoke is as dangerous as they are making it out to be and that the ban will protect my health? Not really - I just don't think there is any definitive evidence one way or another.

There was debate on the forum about trans fats when the NY ban was in proposal & at the time, I sided with legislation - for the same reason above - it would outwardly appear to personally benefit me. Now, around here anyway, there are a lot of places eliminating trans fats by choice & aggressively advertising it.

I would have to think the same would eventually happen with smoking - the market would force change if it was seen to be required.

And if the place I like to eat doesn't adopt the no-smoking policy, I could always get take-out.

A bit off topic, but way too much ado about the trans fats ban. Trans fats are Hydrogenated versions of the liquid form. No other difference. Hydrogenated vegetable oil is a trans fat. Liquid vegetable oil is not. I fail to see the big deal about banning the hydrogenated version of the same thing if the only thing that makes it unhelathy is the hydrogenation process. It doesn't affect taste, it doesn't affect calories. It's just a more solid version of the liquid. Seems to me we could all easily adjust to such a miniscule inconvenience if it can help the public health. Buy it by the bottle and leave the cans on the shelf. Or if you're a restaruant, buy it by the jug instead of by the block. Big Deal! I'd rather pour a liquid than melt a glob. Rant over.

Hey Pony
This is not about Smoking Laws!
Or to compare Smoking to Trans Fats! "You can argue that in another post"
It's about stupid laws! Thats it.

Was just over at a friends house this evening.
But he had to make sure his 4 year old grand-daughter had a helmet on or he could be fined $107.00 for her not wearing one.. on private property! (a bike") This is just silly.. IMO

Thats just my take on this..

This is just my take on this and you all can flame me here. :)

Me has thick skin! :)

Agree that they are designed to generate $ to feed the cancer n' the god, (big government) o' Libs n' Dems n' some Repubs, (like maybe Sen. John McCain). That said: I think there is another significant issue ya maybe overlookin' here it's called: POWER. (IMHO). JR

Re: Belmont CA a Stupid town in a Stupid state

I see it as we are to stupid to think for ourselves, whether is it be this topic, or what we eat or drink or cook our food in. We need to have someone force their opinion of what is good on us. That is taking our freedom away.
I can't believe that the libs who cry so hard about the Patriot Act and loosing freedoms, even though not a one of them could point to a freedom they lost, are not up in arms about this. This is taking freedom away from you and I.

On the mark with POWER OMR.

Agree with you Eric. The piece you are missing is that Health and the Environment are the religions of the left. They are doing their moral duty to protect your body. That is why this is not stealing freedom; it is honorable, it is good, it is righteous. Totally different to them despite the obvious irony.

Oh, oh, and another specific reason they are so justified is that it is an evil, Capitalistic, megalomaniacal, behemoth of corporate greed called Big Tobacco :% They get to slay one of their demons while honoring the Great Mother.

Yup, the NoGo II dude is all over this. We'll have a fat tax, there already is a junk food tax in CA. Just think what would happen to poor Vlado's beef fest. It still blows my mind that many people don't see the progression: "Don't worry, they won't do that , how stupid . . ."

QC, maybe honey will attract the bee, but just in case, I'll keep wielding my 2 x 4.

This has gone way beyond a joking matter. This is pure and simple the unfettered Left and a complacent, I want to feel good, don't want to make any waves, want to look like a touchy feely compassionate tolerant moderate, society that they have created.

One day they will wake up and they will wish that their government school had made them read Ayn Rand. But then that would have defeated their purpose, wouldn't it have?

QC, it isn't that people don't see the progression, it is that they can use their sway in the courts towards whatever goal they want. Open a business and you can't allow someone to enjoy a smoke in a privately owned business? Who's business is it anyways. Liberals will tell you it is the states. That my friend is socialism.

With that arguement drug laws are unnecessary.....
Very good!
Or is is only the things you deem as evil that are worthy of legislation.....
Blame whoever you want, but....
The courts have nothing to do with this one, so don't even start whining about legislating from the bench.....
It is your elected officials who pass these laws....
Or, an initiative voted on & passed by the majority of the voters......
In this case it sucks to be in the minority, as it usually does.......;)
Man, this PC, DC, is killin' me.........d:)
