how many times has this been argued here? a lot!
you have a higher risk of falling down and dyeing, than being harmed by second hand smoke,

why would anyone want or agree to have laws placed in effect that would interfere in our personal lives, that is the topic,

just change smoking to frying bacon, or whatever you like, someone's going to say "I don't like it" therefor no one should do it,

if we allow this kind of thinking, when will they make us eat veggies only, no more milk, will cops be able to stop us and check the air in our tires, because if they are under inflated we use more fuel ?

I know people that do not smoke detest it,
I don't drink, and I detest it, should we ban ol' mud duck? NO!

And your response that you are more likely to fall and die compared to have problems from second hand smoke is equally flawed as the hardcore liberal logic.

If that were true, I should know a lot of people who have just fallen down causing death.

In High School two of my best friends dads died of lung cancer. You ming telling them and their siblings that? Lets see, then I have two aunts that have dies of lung cancer, and then my dad had squimos cell carcinoma but he is still alive and well. (2 months of radiation.)

You cannot compare this to alchohol either.....If I choose to drink it doesnt necesarily affect anyone else UNLESS I choose to act a certain way. Same with veggies and bacon. No matter when or what you smoke it automatically affects all others regardless of any choice in the matter.

Like most highly debated issues the answer falls somewhere inbtween.

Nah Pony: my friend; I don't buy here, (and this is one of those things we all need to ponder individually and eventually decide collectively). Tom is spot on in his MAJOR point. Any of us can find some sort of reason to regulate others to do what we want everybody to do. It is particularly dangerious when it's "about the children" or something that really pulls at your heart strings. That is how Liberals work: Pony. Please learn this as it will help all future analysis. We must wear seat belts, motorcycle helmuts, et al because of medical costs to society at large, (at least that is the argument). Either you choose to build a society on individual responsibility and a relitively small government like our Founding Fathers handed to us in 1776 or you change everything like most Dems/Libs/wobblyModerates want: where you hand over a significant part of your life's energy and responsibility to the Libs' god (BIG GOVERNMENT), and become a VICTIM and then try to do your best to stay out of jail when ol' Nanny government sets their sites on ya. Its all about power: Pony. I'm comfortable with all that power vesting with YOU, my man! I think you will do the right thing, as I know you think things out. Respectfully, (and I do mean it) JR

I have yet to see 2-stroke outboards operated in public buildings. Cows? Nope too. Although McDonalds certainly has been accused of creating a few. ;)

Unfortunately they don't need such a reason Willy! (Although the image you create is kinda funny). The Libs here in God's Country, (which is now totally corntrolled by the Dems), will first make me get titles on 'em, so they know where they are and can charge me annual fees n' taxes. Then they will make me bring 'em in each year for a real critical inspection, (for some taxes n' a fee or two o' course). Then one by one they will make it hard to keep the ol' girls that I luv. Even if I could talk you into commin' here and tunin' 'em up real good it eventually will make no difference. Here in God's country we pay taxes on all types o' phones, cable n' salletate tv, when ya flush the turlet, dump the garbage, fill yer tank. They are lookin' fer ways to tax breathin' here too. They take their notes from the other coast: TAXICHUSETTS! JR 8)8)

Only when eating at McDonalds becomes mandated by law will they be guilty of creating cows. ;);):)

WBW,
It does not have to be 100% analogous to be considered in this discussion. I don't suck on two stroke exhaust either from the pipe, but the discussion of second-hand smoke brings "drifting" stuff directly into the discussion.

Pony,

Are you saying that those people you know all contracted lung cancer form second hand smoke? There is a huge difference between first hand and second hand smoke. Although I believe the risk of first hand smoking is also exaggerated, I have no doubt of the associated health risks. In the case of second hand smoke, the differences in dilution from a variety of sources makes this discussion almost silly. There is a huge difference between locking yourself into a closet for an entire lifetime with a chain-smoker and occasionally whiffing some smoke outdoors. Although some of these idiots basically lie because they want total elimination, nothing less. Including your cigar.

QC, I'm finding it hard to take you serious.

Are you saying that you don't take the liberals at face value? You doubt the sincerity of their words? Shocking!

Re: Belmont CA a Stupid town in a Stupid state

I have a suggestion for those that believe in global warming and second hand smoke causing lung cancer: Unless you are at a distance of twenty feet or more away from a hydrocarbon fueled engine, a factory, pollin or animals of any kind..don't inhale! The strong and intelligent should survive, thereby bettering the gene pool.

Please don't tell me how your socialistic liberal mind would control my invironment for what you think is best for me and my family. My family has been capable of survival for generations. All my family's past generations have survived by deciding what was best for them in any situation, surprise, surprise. The didn't need liberals to tell them to how to raise childern. They did not need idiotic liberal lifestyle laws to tell them what was best for them. Americans needs to forfeit any and all freedoms for the survival and well being of today's liberal public school educated mush heads. For they surely can not take care of themselves.

Can some one tell me what did your state do with the millions they received from the tobaco law suits? How did you (as a tax paying citizen) personally benefit? Did it pay for your second hand smoke afflictions? Can you name ONE person that did get financial aid? The answer is NO! Just follow the money trail mon ami.

It's not about tobacco smoke, booze, guns, etc, (fueled pleasure craft will be next BTW) it's about the liberal socialists in America wanting to control the masses and make them all financially equal and dependent subjects of the new liberal government.

Yes, I am a registered voter and have been for 40 years.
Are You?

Re: Belmont CA a Stupid town in a Stupid state

Belmont is two town's north of where I live and I also own a home in Belmont which I'm getting ready to put on the market.

This in San Mateo County, where the county board of supervisor's just banned smoking in all of the county parks, camp grounds and BEACHES!!! San Mateo county is bordered by San Francisco Bay to the east and the Pacific Ocean, to the west. The north border is the City and County of San Francisco and Santa Clara County to the south. San Mateo County and Santa Clara counties are in the heart of "Silicone Valley."

With all of the huge money around here, the leftist's can vote in the best left wing politicians money can buy. Needless to say, the entire peninsula mostly "Blue." If the Belmont city council get's away with these law's, like the county did, the worst is yet to come. I have a feeling these types of law's will spread like the plague thruout Calipornia and cause the loss of many more civil liberties.

Fortunatly the town I have my main house in is quite consertive and continues to have had a budget surplus, for several years, which means they don't have to kiss any politician's arse.

QC, one of my buddies dads was a chain smoker his entire life. My two aunts and my dad however have never smoked a day in their lives (The type my dad had is something that almost always is smoker specific. The doctor told my dad he was a liar when my dad told him he wasnt a smoker) ......but all grew up in a smoking household. I do agree the effects are exaggerated to a degree. If they were as the hardcore libs want us to believe, many many many more people would have lung cancer and other issues.

I have said it before and I will say it again, my views on the subject are skewed from my expiriences, but I am able to see that they are. The is why I hold sort of juxtaposed views about the issue. It is why I am in favor for some albeit small regulation, yet am comfortable with the fact a smoker has a right to smoke...

Thanks for the respect OMR, it is much obliged.

Exactly! As others you got my point.
It's about feel good stupid laws that don't need to be
Swap smoking with Calories for example.

Just dropped off some tools with a good friend today.
He is 6 foot 3 inches and over 450 lbs.

What is the next law?
We walk into together at a Micky D's and order two Big Macs
He is told by the Calorie Police that "he" can only order a salad and Fish?

This wasn't meant to be a smoker vrs non-smokers post.

It was about stupid laws...smoking just being one of them.

But flame on people.
I say ban camp fires, in camp grounds and make forest fires illegal.!

Yup, that ought to work! 8)

Re: Belmont CA a Stupid town in a Stupid state

Always a tough discussion, and I think a good one, as it is fueled by the same passions on both sides as many of these freedom discussions. I still find it very interesting that the same gang who considers the president a freedom stealer are the first to recommend that we limit citizen's access to currently legal stuff. Very odd . . .

I wish that slippery slope was not the concern I have for most of these things. I wish that I could simply say, "well ya know, it is probably good to limit access to bazookas", but the fact is that once a line is drawn it continues to move. The fat police are immediately behind the second hand smoke police and they are gaining. There is no way one can claim this is paranoia, we've already debated the New York City ban on trans fats . . .

Our state's Attorney General was in the lead when it came to suing big tobacco. It made national headlines and other states followed his lead. He got $1.6 Billion to be spent on related programs. What happened to the money? REPUBLICANS!!! The pathetic excuse for a Governor we had at the time was so incredibly fiscally irresponsible that he stole that money from the settlement to pay for his and his predecessor's idiocy. Lucky Bloody Us!

Wilipedia: "In 2003, McCallum signed a budget-repair bill that traded most of a long-term return from the state’s $1.6 billion tobacco settlement for a one-time lump sum that fixed the deficit for a year but didn’t provide the necessary long-term solutions. He then spent all of the money in an attempt to balance the budget in under one year."

Incidentally, the Attorney General is now our Governor. The joker he replaced lost largely on this issue alone, although he was incompetent enough to lose for any of a multitude of reasons. Scott McCallum ... What A Buffoon!
