no telling what you are getting with that Force. but otherwise, a tri-hull OB for $1000 is not a bad way to start; easy to ditch it if it gives you trouble. Just don't get caught in a tarbaby.

Re: Advise please!

well those pics are about worthless BUT the asking price is 800 not 1000......He has lowered his price and not changed the body of the add....politely offer 500 and if he says no walk away... go get some tacos.... after eating call him back and offer 600 and take it home...... You're gonna have to look at it in person though..... look for rot and do a compression test on the engine..... then run the engine.... if all's good snag it..... this summer, depending on what it is, the engine would possibly sell for more..... BTW do NOT take your kids to look at it if you can avoid it but do take the wifey..... the kids playing in it and getting all excited will hurt your bargaining power but the wifey looking pissed and getting back in the truck might cut the price in half instantly LOL

I like the way you think, Smoke! HAHA! Nope, not taking the chit-lens, they are staying with grandma. :)

Yea, I think it is worth a look. I'll be in the area anyway. He said he has kept it garaged since he has had it. If I can get it for the right price, just might be good to go. Would leave 1k for fixes/accessories....

Have you read either of my boat build threads in my signature yet? I'm nothing if not thrifty. :D

Re: Advise please!

It's worth look for sure Salty. I like the hull design (style of tri-hull) and the layout. The bowrider upfront looks kinda' comfy = good chance Mrs. Salty might like that part. Even if it might need a little interior work over time, that's not too hard. The Force OB creeps me out a little bit (don't make 'em no more), but the old Chryslers they were based on weren't all bad.

You won't be able to be objective when you go look at it. You'll kind of already have bought it when you get there. Plan on walking away ... it'll help a little bit to prepare yourself for the likelihood that this thing is a piece of junk. If it's not, it'll be a pleasant surprise.

If you do go for it - don't blow the $1k right away (unless something needs fixing before you can go on the lake). Give it some time to figure out what you want to add/fix first. Priorities change as you get to know the boat a little bit.

BTW - it does work out sometimes. Smoke got one for free, and I bought mine three years ago for $500.

Re: Advise please!

Um yeah that is over the price of the Mako! It doesn't look like a tube pulling style boat either.

Well lots to look at and listen to before any cash comes into play. If all looks good you can always say you only have $1500 cash...and see what he says. From the pictures it looks like it is sitting next to a sailboat.

Re: Advise please!

Talk about having something dropped in your lap, 10 minutes away is close enough, just don't let this cloud your jugement!

If there is not Rot and the motor is sweet then at $15-1800 you have a great boat.

Re: Advise please!

looks good; plan on doing the trailer brakes unless he has recently. I assume you have the right tow vehicle; you are in a heavier class.

I think the 150 may be a little on the small side but still sufficient

The curtains look new, or maybe just wellmaintained, which is a good sign. For any boat, look around the guy's yard and stuff and see if he looks squared away, or a slob. That will tell you if he's taken care of the boat.

Your maintenance, repair, startup, operating and carrying costs will increase by moving to a bigger boat (from a 16 to a 21) and 2 axle trailer, so look into them at the front end. Also your cost to repower goes up, and you will want bigger better toys!

Good luck!

Ohhhh......

Only 10 mins from my home too.....

The cuddy cuts into fishing-space, but the cuddy and that enclosure protects from the weather and New England cold to extend your boating season. Earlier spring - later fall fishing!

That 150HP will be fine for tubing, unless you have maniac teenagers like I do.

It looks like it has a fiberglass deck (no carpet!) and self-bailing deck scuppers. If so, that is a big plus.

When you check out the motor, don't forget to test the tilt/trim. Tilt the motor all the way up, and leave it up for about 10 minutes. Watch to see that it doesn't slowly start drooping down. If it does, it might just need the tilt/trim fluid topped off, or it could be a leak or bigger problem.

Much like the Mako, there are some real practical things I like about that boat. I don't know much about Yamaha OBs, but I hear lots of good about 'em. The deck makeup on that boat should be pretty utilitarian = easy to care for. Self bailing too, I would think. That is a boat that would be more versatile for use fishing big water too.

Hope it turns out to be a good one!
