I would also want to hear the motor on the muffs...see how easily it starts etc. Since it is a two stroke you will get some smoke but hopefully not too much. Look at the other items like others have described and most of all have only $1500 in one pocket for the pitch if everything looks good. If he really wants to sell the boat...that is a reasonable offer. Most people inflate their original prices knowing they will accept less.

Oh one other thing...if you DO purchase it...make sure you run some Seafoam in the tank in case there is any water in the fuel and also to help clean out the fuel lines etc.

The only thing I do not like about the Grady is that there are no seats behind the two front seats. i.e.. no place for the kids etc to sit while the tube is being pulled.

Good luck!

Re: Advise please!

in calm waters IE tubing folding camp chairs work well in the back of a fishing rig.... compression test! DO IT!

Do we have any locals that could check out the guts of the boat for him? rot can be hard for the inexperienced to find vs a vet who can 'smell' it from 50' away

Re: Advise please!

Damn, I leave you guys for a couple days and WAM, 3 more pages, lol

The grady looks really good on the exterior, where are the rest of the pics.

I would first say, it is an old boat, unless it has been garage kept its whole life, it will have rott somewhere. Just because it has wood in her and maybe some rott, don't take that as it can't be fished for a few years before you have the income and knowhow to fix her up.

Grady made a good boat for years, but there fit and finish was lacking for sure. The boat will be self bailing and easy to maintain, which is why you see alot of them still on the water. Self bailing decks will outlast boats that don't have self bailing decks.

Like any boat, you want to go through it with a fine toothed comb. Open every hatch, every access panel and hatch, Take a flashlight and a screwdriver and a razor knife with you. Oh, don't forget to take a certafied mechanic with you also!!!!!

The canvas is a good sign, but it also tells me someone spent some money, then decided not to keep the boat! Why? Is it because they realized the motor was shot or was about to fall off the stern because of the rot in the transom. Walk around the entire boat and check for soft spots. If the deck is soft, the stringers will probably be soft as well.

Check inside every bait well and storage compartments. Check to see how clean all the areas are.

Ask the owner to see any literature and maintenance receipts that he has. He should have many if the boat has been maintained properly. Also ask where the motor and boat was maintained at. Was it covered? winterized? Garage kept? God the list goes on!!!

The boat looks like it has been kept well by the pics. Take your camera and don't make an offer until you post back hear. Give him the "its a Little out of my budget but the kids would really love it story" This may help, take your youngest with you and tell him to look really cute! Hell, maybe you can trade him for the boat! lol Joking!

I like the old gray's with the clap board look on the outside, it gives it character and seperates it from other WA. This is really the perfect size for you to start with. You will like the open back end for fishing, and the inclosure and cabin are great for extension of the boating seasons and the family. This is better than the center console mako imo for you.

Last but not least, stand on the motor and see if the transom flexes. You may have found a good boat. Good luck.

Hey...good luck on you boatquest this weekend! One thing I learned from looking at boats is to bring your own battery along (if possible?) I know people selling boats should be prepared to start and run a boat, but this time of year you're bound to run into some that need a new battery or might take a while in the cold...just a thought?! (maybe it should be a sign?)

Wow... What a thread!!!

Salty, my $. 02 on this one. Don't buy some huge boat in the final chapter of its life and expect to be happy with your decision. How about a 16' or 17' aluminum runabout with an outboard motor?

Remember that the fun in this deal will be had with your family out on the water in whatever boat you have. Boat problems kill boating joy at a rate on 10:1. The Do yourself a favor here and keep it simple. Less is more when incomes to boating on a budget.

The boat looks to be in good shape, time will tell. Boat life at its end? That means half the people on this board must quickly take there boat to the dump, lol

16 to 17 foot runabout is not going to be as safe or as comfortable than a larger boat with more freeboard. The first time the mrs. or the kids have to go potty, well, enough said. The larger boat will be more forgiving with wakes and weather also. The full inclosure and cabin for a family are very nice to have and will extend his boating seasons for fishing etc.

Also boating doesn't mean you have to run everywhere when you are out, simply pull in to a cove and throw a couple rods out and take your kids swimming. The boat doesn't even have to be moving 90 percent of the time. You can boat on a budget with a larger boat, trust me, I do it.

If he gets into a boat like the grady, it should be low maintenance, he just needs to make sure the boat has been well preserved as to not get into extravagant expenditures right after he buys it. You do not want a restore project imo for your first boat. Refurbish ok, restore, not so ok.

Salty,

Don't go out there to look at that Grady TOO early. You'll look too eager and that will affect your bargaining power.

Wait til about 6:30am...

Or jumper cables. and your own gas, and oil, and tank, if it's an old one. You don't want to run his sludge through your motor!

Re: Advise please!

if that grady is a salt water boat, and no sign it was stored with the plug in, I wouldn't worry about the omnipresent rot that the freshwater sofaboaters fear so much. If the transom doesn't move, and deck doesn't cave in, grab it. grady's are made for the outdoors. At that price it's no risk.

Me checking her, then my wife and two of my three kids. Last pic of it in my driveway :D

Front bumper is off due to a small patch that wasn't finished, still needs to be sanded, buffed, and gel coated. It is at the very top, starboard side. He said his boat guy was going to finish it after it warmed up.....no biggie......and the rail mounts are broke......cosmetic stuff.

Motor is solid, trim/lift works great, all electrical works......no soft spots.....so......*deep exhale*......I think we did ok.

I May have waited, posted pics for opinions, but he had it out in a open spot in front of his house.....and two other guys, just driving by, stopped to check her out....so I pounced!!!!

He wouldn't budge lower than 2k, got it for 2200. He has had it for 13 years and is the owner of a boat transport/boat fabric co. We got along great.....may actually may develop into a friendship.

Well.......I thank you all for your help, criticism, and advice!!!!! I take it well, and I thank you all for your honesty.....I probably would have bought a junker had it not been for all of you!!

If you find yourself in my area....come on by....will buy you a round!!!

Now back to my boat.....don't matter that it is 10 at night.....would it be weird if I slept in it???? :D
