Re: Adding Power Trim

Pretty sure it is not compatible with your motor. The "type 1" PTT systems were in use until (I think) the early 80's.

These are the parts you need, but if you look long enough you can find a complete set for MUCH less.

Pump assy Mercury Outboard Power Trim Pump 4 Line Hose 105921 | eBay

Trim cyls Mercury Mariner I4 i6 Power Trim Cylinders Mounting Brackets | eBay

Hydraulic hoses New Power Trim Hoses for Mercury Outboard Set of 4 | eBay

Control panel http://www.ebay.com/itm/Power-Trim-..._Accessories_Gear&hash=item3f1ba67037&vxp=mtr

I bought mine a few years ago as part of a whole motor for $300. Powerhead was blown but the PTT and lower unit were in great shape. Nice thing about buying the full motor was that all of the needed mounting hardware was "included".

Re: Adding Power Trim

Mercurymang,

I helped fix up my son's 80 hp merc a few years ago - and except for a couple of pump issues it has served well.. The pump/reservoir needed a cleanup inside and the solenoids WD-40 lubricated. The hoses looked terrible with outer sheathing cracking off, but they have not leaked for four years. The up/down switch was ugly as well, but continues to work.

I liked the "Vintage Mercury .....Unit\" you found on ebay as best and believe you should be able to install it without problems. Price is good as well, assuming it works. The system has the identical parts to the system on my son's boat.

Too bad the engine is not included with the pt&t. My son's $300 purchase included a 16' boat, 80 hp engine w/pt&t, a trailer, and a second 80 hp engine for parts. Took a couple of seasons to get all the bugs out and the boat rot-free, but he has a lake-worthy rig for minimum cost.

Best of luck with the upgrade PT&T. I know how handy lifting the engine can be from the helm.

Re: Adding Power Trim

So is the control panel more than just some switches. I had assumed it was just some switches that flipped polarity around to move the pump positive and negative but obviously I don't know much about trim systems.

"vintage" usually means a 3w trim motor. blue, green, and black. sometimes there isn't even a black wire because the motor is grounded through frame. 3w system do not flip polarity. they are blue=up and green=down. if you ground green while powering blue then both field magnets are energized at half power in opposite directions. smoke and melted stuff is a common result.

Re: Adding Power Trim

I was lucky and mine came with the trim switch and a long harness. It is three push button switches. One could make one up with three switches from the wiring diagram which you can find with google. There is also a microswitch attached to one of the rams that cuts out the tilt feature unless you push two buttons at the same time. When I got mine it was wired to eliminate the microswitch and went up and down all the way by just pushing the top or bottom button. I wanted to make it work factory so I found a microswitch on line for 3 bucks and fixed it. I think it dangerous to the motor to operate with to much up trim at higher power. It won't go past a bout 15 degrees of trim now unless I knowingly push both switches for tilt. I know that everyone thinks 350 was to much to pay but I'm old and that old motor was getting heavy plus now I can trim the motor and get the bow up in heavy waves on Lk Michigan.

Re: Adding Power Trim

Great tips guys. Right now I'm on a fact finding mission - trying to identify what it is I need to purchase. Last thing I want to do is pay $400 for a set up and then find out that is for 80hp and up or something like that. To that end any information you guys have is welcomed.
So am I correct in understanding that there are only two setups for the older mercs ('75 ish) or are there possible more out there?

The one listed above on Ebay called "vintage" will work for you and someone posted the manual you need too. If you read the manual and buy that one your good to go except for the switch which is also on Ebay for another $75 Keep searching maybe you can find a much better deal, or an old broken donor motor cheap there are lots of size motors from about 1980 backwards that used the same PTT system. I did have to lift my motor to get the new rams and brackets installed. Just a little bit, I only needed about a 1/2" from the transom so I didn't have to unhook anything on the motor, just remove two bolts and loosen the clamps. Took me all day to complete the installation by myself using an engine hoist to lift the motor. All I did to bleed was run it up and down a few times and keep filling with oil (I think your supposed to do more but as I said it works great). A lot of piddly work cutting holes for hoses and running wires, battery hookup, mounting switch panel, etc. Not hard at all, kinda fun actually. You'll need a large hex allen type socket to get the old rams off and new ones on plus some small flare nut wrenches for the hose connections, otherwise just standard tools did the job.

Thanks George, I am starting to feel a little more confident now regarding this project. Just need to save up the cash and keep my eyes open now.

Thanks RRitt. Here's some pics of my current setup. It looks to me like really all I do is remove the existing shocks and install the ones from ebay.

Re: Adding Power Trim

Mercurymang I have the same manual tilt set up on my 80 70hp merc and I am in the process of installing the exact same PTT that I picked up locally from a guy who didn’t want it on his 65hp anymore for $180. Unit works fine as I bench test it. One thing you will need is an adapter kit which includes various spacers, washers and the main item is a new lower shock mount pin. I found the installation kit on ebay for 75.00. Check go2marine.com, I think they have one for 72.00. The old pin has to be removed (too short) and the new one installed. The old one is a bear to get out, which is where I am in the process, they still haven’t moved. I’m soaking them with Liquid Wrench and plan try a pipe wrench to ease them off.

I think you will find out that the lower shock mount is used by the PTT cylinders, but the upper shock mount is used to bolt on the PTT brackets. These brackets hold the bolts that are the upper trim cylinder mounts.

So the lower mount is a direct fit. The bracket would then fit over where the upper shock mount would normally go and then that upper mount would attach to the bracket?

Yes. MM, that is the way it works. The PTT brackets hook over the transom, and are supposed to be thru-bolted to the transom to carry the power transmitted to them when the motor is trimmed. The PTT brackets bolt to the transom bracket with 1/2" fine thread stainless steel bolts and washers.

Re: Adding Power Trim

Now that I know what I'm looking for, I have been watching craigslist. I just missed a donor motor with working trim for $100:mad-new:
There also a 115 with PTT but it's a little far. Think I'll keep watching.

Re: Adding Power Trim

Chris is exactly right. The upper mounting placement changes because of those brackets. I managed to break one into 3 pieces and they're no treat to try to find. All of this stuff is listed as obsolete. I noticed also the one in the eb*y add you linked has sold.
