Re: Adding Power Trim

I wanted to put this out there for discussion and just to get some of the groups thoughts on this. I was looking at my manual and it shows two styles for my motor and it refers to them as Integral and Non-Integral types. The one being discussed above is what they are calling the Non-Integral type. Here is a link to what i think they are calling an Integral type. Can anyone speak to this type? Is one better or more desirable than the other. Just asking questions while i'm waiting for the right deal to pop up on craigslist.

The integral type is a better design, however, I do not think it will work with the transom bracket of your motor. You would need to change the triple clamp and transom bracket.

Is it possible that your manual covers a wide range of models and years of motor? Chances are that the integral type of trim system is used on later model years.

No, it's a supplemental manual that is targeted to a very narrow range of motors. It covers the following:

'72-'76 650
'77-'78 700
'79-'83 70
'84-'85 60
'84-'89 60
'86-'89 50

Edit: y'know the more I think about it, you may be right. Unfortunately, the manual doesn't say exactly so I can only try to make an educated guess.

Yes I think the trim system changed to the integrated type in and around the early to mid 80's. I have only seen the non-integral type used on the 70's model years. Mind you, I don't have alot of experience.

Well, whatever experience you have, I'm sure it more than I have. I think I'm settled in my mind that the non integral is what i need. Now I just need to dig one up. When I do, I'll be sure to put all the info in this thread.

It is better to buy PTT as one unit.you need type 1 pump,2 rams(as on pic),2 high pressure hoses,2 low pressure hoses, operating switch, side mounting brackets and mounting hardware.hoses alone are $40+ per pop if buying separetly and you will raking up a nice bill for each part that you need.donor motor or boat motor combo is the good bet for you.

Ok, thanks for the sanity check. Yep, I'll hold out for the full setup.

Keep in mind that you may still need 4 new hoses even if you find a full setup. I just removed a 1976 Merc 500 with PTT and the rubber casing just fell apart on all 4 hoses.

Still on the hunt. The problem i am having is that I have found quite a few donor motors that have the hoses and the cylinders but no pump or controls.

Re: Adding Power Trim

Those two cyls operate off of one pump. On each cyl there is a high pressure and a low pressure hose. The pump will have 4 ports on which to connect the two hoses from each cyl.

The hoses in that listing are most likley shot. The rubber jacketing is missing on 3 of the 4 hoses and will "weep" fluid when pressurized. I replaced the 4 hoses on my system a few years ago and found a great deal on ebay for $80 for the set. As the listing suggests, the bushings also need to be replaced. Not sure if they are still available.

Don't despair. The rubber exterior on my PTT hoses fell off year ago. I taped the white nylon sheathing with electrical tape, and all was good...

Re: Adding Power Trim

Thanks guys. I'm not too concerned about the hoses as there's a place in town that you can take that kind of stuff to and they'll fix it right up. As long as I have something for them to work with. I really having trouble finding a complete setup so I'll probably have to piece-meal it.

I think I have located the correct pump for these cylinders. What do you think is the better route?

Re: Adding Power Trim

Regards cylinders, top one has one improper hose fitting at the cylinder.take a look at bracket and a mounting hole, and high pressure hose.see the bend.its there for a reason.design of cylinders makes 2 hoses to go around mounting bolt.if you we're to lower your engine with this set up,line would be crushed in the best case.i saved old fittings and soldered them to new hose.it is really a tight fit.

Re: Adding Power Trim

I finally found a motor off of craigslist with a TT setup. It's a '75 850. I got everything. Motor, trim, trim pump and mercontrol for $200. I built a hoist and stand and got it moved this afternoon.

take a look at the trim cylinders. One is thicker than the other. Not sure what to make of that.

Anyway, I'm ready to start tearing this down and see if it fits. I'll post up some measurements in the next few days. I'm just looking for input on whether or not this setup will work with my 650.

Bump: Anyone have experience with these trim cylinders that are of different sizes? Is that normal? Just looking for info.

There are two different sized of shafts on the hydraulic cylinders. I'll check in my selock manual (has limited uses but this is one of them) and post the two sizes shortly.

<Edit>
Wrong place to look. The two sizes of "piston rods" on these cylinders are 3/4" and 1".
Per this scan some kind soul pointed me to in my similar thread: (I would credit him if I recalled his screen name)

Merc850 is due credit for that scan!

Note the different sizes of the fluid cavities in the differing cylinders. I reckon you don't have a matched pair.:grumpy: It's too bad we didn't live closer because I could probably hook you up with one. I'm guessing shipping would be ridiculous from here. If you're really stuck though... we can figure something out.

PS:
Your 85HP power head is the same setup as mine.

Re: Adding Power Trim

Oh no. Just my luck. Maybe somewhere down the line, someone tried to fix one of them and got the wrong one. Thanks for the help Yesterday. Let me do a little diggin' around and see if I can come up with one locally. If not, I'll send you a note.
