I THINK I’m gonna just gel over 1708. My boat didn’t come with a “deck”. It had some fiberglass inserts that screwed down to the stringers to have a flat surface to walk on. I only have the one for the front. I’m toying around with the idea of building something clever out of teak that will bolt to the stringers, so you won’t even REALLY see the bottom of the hull. I was thinking rolling on gel would be cheaper and maybe a little more durable in what would basically be a bilge. Whatcha think? Can’t seem to post a picture from my phone, but I have a thread on here, 1957 Fleetform if you care to see what I’m working with. If I did just roll on gel and leave the texture.... if I understand correctly....I would just use surface wax on the last coat and leave it like that right?

Not sure how I missed your thread.. Thats an awesome looking boat, can't wait to see it all finished!
Yep, you're correct, you can use unwaxed gelcoat until your last coat which gets wax. If you want the gelcoat to be glossy, then I would recomment mixing the last coat with 50% duratec and then you don't need wax at all and it will give the top coat some gloss... Otherwise, the surfacing wax will dull the gloss of the gelcoat.

On a side note, my newest video is up on my youtube channel on finishing up the nonskid and applying paint to the deck.
Enjoy!

Nothing too exciting to report, but started on my transom assembly overhaul, got the old gimbal bearing removed and the oil seal last night. Went to install the new oil seal and I didn't have a socket or anything lying around the right diameter to pound in the new one... I coulda probably used a brass punch or something, but I ended up measuring it with my digital calipers and discovered that 1 1/2" schedule 40 pipe is the perfect dimension to punch it in so ran by the homeless despot over lunch today and picked up a 6" nipple for a couple bucks... I'll finish that up tonight and then I'll clean up the surfaces for the new bellows.
More to come.

And yes, videos for all of it coming as well.

Correction on my last post.. I meant 2 1/2" pipe. However most places don't carry that so I got a 2" coupler and turned it on the lathe to the right diameters. It worked like a charm. Bearing is in now.

Not ENTIRELY boat related but I got a new toy in the mail today :D... it's not a super high end rig but it has really good reviews for a hobbyist/entry level machine... now its time to get some practice, figure I'll start with a welding cart..

I'm a horrible joke sayer. I never git it right with the priest, white guy, black guy and Asian guy jokes.
But In written format I bet you'll like this. Humor puts a chuckle in your belly and another few minutes of just happy.

The old farmer had a large pond in the back, fixed up nicely with
picnic tables, a barbecue pit, horseshoe courts, and some apple and
peach trees. The pond was properly shaped and fixed up for swimming
when it was built.

One evening, the old guy decided to go down to the pond and look it
over. He hadn’t been there for awhile. He grabbed a five gallon
bucket to bring back some fruit.

As he neared the pond, he heard voices shouting and laughing with
glee. As he came closer, he saw it was a bunch of young women skinny
dipping in his pond.As he approached, he made the women aware of his
presence.

At once, they all went to the deep end.

One of the women shouted to him, “We’re not coming out until you leave.”

The old man frowned, “I did not come down here to watch you young ladies swim naked,or to make you get out of the pond naked.”

Holding the bucket up in the air, he said, “I’m here to feed the alligator.”

Some old guys can still think fast!

Enjoy...

Use a touch of Quicksilver power tune installing the bellows ring. it'll slide right in with your fingers for the most part.
