I’m guessing regular paint will eventually peel off due to the aluminum. It’ll need to be etched with a zinc chromate primer first.

I was actually wondering that... I wasn't positive if it was a zinc or aluminum diecast. I've dealt with both at work quite a bit and to me it DOES look to be aluminum, however many carburetors were made from both. Either way, I gave the carb a good sanding/wire brushing, and then coated it with a high zinc etching primer before the black enamel. Hoping it gives it at least SOME longevity. We'll see though.

Just for my own edification, what is the downside of the carb potentially retaining heat? Assuming its very minimal from the paint. The entire internal surface of the carburetor is still bare metal, and this surface is getting constant airflow through it as the engine sucks air. The heat transfer value is substantially higher through convection versus the conduction and radiation the outside of the carb would see. (Think heating up a piece of metal and then putting one down on the counter to cool and taking one and shooting compressed air at it... which one is gonna cool faster)

I guess in theory it would take an experiment to find out, but I would be willing to bet carburetor is losing heat through internal airflow at a much higher rate than it is gaining heat through the intake manifold which is thermally broken from it through the gasket anyways.

Dunno.. again, id prefer to limit the corrosion versus potentially run a carburetor a few degrees warmer. I'm just pre-heating the gas LOL :D

I agree with your assessment. Paint it and don't worry about it. I think any heat retention effect of paint on a carb is minimal and worth it for it's protective qualities. Let's not forget that just about the entire motor is painted black without issue.

Now if these were air cooled motors, that may warrant a closer look....though I've seen many smaller air cooled engines come with factory black paint on the fins.

Maybe thats why Mercruiser chose black lol.. its the most emmisive color! Thats why you sometimes see black heat sinks on CPU coolers n' such.... OOORRRR maybe Merc just liked black lol

At this funny business aside... I got one of the motor mounts glassed in last night... I was planning on doing both, but it was a very messy process, and once one was done, I didn't have anywhere to sit to work on the other one lol. I have absolutely no idea if I put down enough glass.. kinda felt like I was doing paper mache with glass.. There are a couple spots I will have to grind where it wouldn't lay down perfect, but I probably have a good 5 layers of 1708 on top and at least 1 or 2 layers most other places with lots of overlapping.

They chose black because originally it was all white and it showed slight oil weapage around cork gaskets not leakage therefore black hid all that really well

Posted my carb disassembly video today. Was a little bit of a learning experience for me since I'd not done a Mercarb before, but it went pretty well. Only one screw was injured during the making of this video.

Carb is rebuilt and clean and all settings and adjustments made per service manual... obviously will need tweaked once on the h20 but it feels good to check something else off the list.

Finished up the video on measuring, making, and installing the engine mounts. Everything went really well, and feels good to have "done"... Calling it done with quotation marks, because I still want to go back and grind a couple bubbles out and maybe add one or two more pieces of 1708. I stopped where I did because I was afraid the glass was getting so thick the heat would get out of control. Should be another 30 minutes and then complete tho.

Enjoy!

Nice! I dunno why I put it off so long, it really wasn't that big of a deal.. something about lifting a motor to put in the boat and then take it back out sounds like a huge deal but it's really like a 20 minute job.. I spent more time looking for the rear mount hardware.

Side note, carb has been back together for a little while now, but I just got around to finishing up the "how to: reassemble" video... I also decided to link it it my sig for anyone who might find it useful...

and man its hard to keep a carb assembly video under an hour lol... Its so long, but i cut out everything I could that didn't make me miss information. Oh well!

Lol I made sure of it....

Got a quick hour in on the boat tonight just tabbing some odds and ends...
starting to realize this boat is gonna be rock solid but it's also gonna weigh 500lbs more than factory lol. Just got 5gallon bucket number 5yesterday.

don't thinkI'm gonna need nearly that much more but I have a bunch of extra 1708 so I thought I'd try my hand at a foam core skim board when I'm done...

Decided to suck it up and suit up for some grinding last night. Had a couple bubbles on the engine mounts and I wanted to put a couple extra layers on. I stopped shy on the first layup cuz I wasn't concerned about heat buildup with too thick of a layup. Ground out the bubbles and sharp nibs, while I was at it, I rounded over the corners on the rear seat box and walked around the back grinding off any sharp spots, bubbles, etc... Hoping this might be my last grinding session.

Once that was done, I finished the engine mounts off with a couple more layers of 1708 and some extra tabbing... Thinking its probably overkill but should be done now. I also took some extra resin and soaked the corners that I rounded off since I exposed bare ply.

Next order of business will be lifting the engine back up and placing it in, marking for the front mounts, take engine BACK out, drill holes oversize, fill with PB, and redrill. Once that is done, I plan on finishing up any sacrificial mounting surfaces for bilge pump, batteries, trim pump, etc, cuz I want to gelcoat the entire back storage/bilge area so once the motor is in, I don't need to worry about getting back there for much else.

I feel like I've started to lose some motivation since I'm coming to the realization that boating is not gonna happen this year lol.

I hear ya about motivation. Technically, we don't have a "boating season" around here. It's never really that cold, and when it is - its not for very long. You'll see boats out fishing all year long. Watersports not so much, but fishing for sure. I still can't seem to get my motivation up. I blame the heat.

(edit) We only have 3 seasons in Alabama....

I'm starting to get a little sick of your "extended" football season lol.. give someone else a chance!
