Thank you all for your help! In about two hours I'll be headed to the boat to knock out that transom cover piece. I'm so nervous.. I'm either gonna sink or float, lucky for me fatties are really buoyant!!

Well..... us fatties aren't as buoyant as i thought :grumpy: yesterday afternoon's one piece transom cover was an epic fail. Everything that could go wrong, did. Ill post some pics so i can look back and laugh. Sure wasn't funny yesterday though, i wasted two quarts of resin and almost 8 feet of 1708  Im on my way this morning to undo the damage from last night, gotta sand all that resin off. After i get it prepped, im gonna do three separate pieces.

what did me in?
  • it got dark and i only had one drop light
  • i wetted out the piece, but, in a rush forgot to wett out the hull
  • tried to use a six inch roller, for spaces where i should have been using a 4 inch
  • stayed in some spots too long
  • ran out of gloves, got resin all over my hands
  • spilled a whole bottle of mekp
  • was physically tired, was a work day, had been up 24 hours
lessons well learned, the up side is today has to be better than last night :)

I have felt your pain . . . restoration work can be very tiring and just weighs on you. I finally launched my boat today after a seemingly endless amount of work, and I know that you will have your day in the sun as well.

Tomorrow will be better. :thumb:

Hey Goldie, that stinks.....Im not sure whats going on I really enjoy working with 1708. I too struggled a bit with the 1708 on long runs. I never messed with wetting it out first, for me it was more of a PIA to handle the material that way (wanted to stretch). I would cut it into strips, and roll it up into rolls, making sure i had the CSM side on the outside. ( So when I rolled it out, the CSM side was down)

like this....

for me, the trick of 1708, was to make sure I got a very good coat of resin on first, position and roll out the roll. then applying the resin on the top side with with same 4 inch roller, not using nearly as much resin and the first coat. the idea was to try an draw the resin up through the cloth from the bottom. Once it is clear/transparent, your done, dont mess with it any more.

I used the exact same process, when I did my floor....

This was 73 inches long and 53 inches wide......did it all in one set....I had everything set and ready, I would prep 4 cups of 750 ml of resin/9 CC's of catalyst at a time, ( want it a bit light to give me some more working time) short the catalyst. but that was measured and ready as well.

I dont know if this will help, I kinda think that everybody figures out their own way..... but this worked for me.

Hang in there, Goldie. You'll figure it out. Just takes a while to figure what works for you when handling this stuff.

Thanks for the tips, I will add them to my repertoire :D I find that pre wetting and dry (referring to the cloth) both have their pros and cons, i've been taking the wonderful advice from this forum to heart while developing my own style, anytime you share knowledge you are being helpful! Thank you!!

Hey guys, I have a few questions..

Do my bulkheads have to be off the hull like my stringers?

What are the steps to make and seal the drain hole for the bulkheads?

During the deconstruction there was no original ski locker, only the leftover pieces where it had been rigged. Any suggestion on how I should go about reconstructing the ski locker? Should I purchase a ski locker hatch first?

I'm going to sand the exterior a section at a time when there is downtime from the inside stuff...

What should i use to fill all of these exterior holes? the interior was filled with PB, then layered with 1708, then CSM over that.

TIP: Instead of using your hands to spread the resin on the vertical pieces try using a Bondo spreader to "Squeegee" the resin up thru the cloth. I think you'll find it works rather well and will keep your hands a bit less sticky. Also @ the intersection of the fillets and the hull use the spreader to hold the cloth in place when you roll the cloth out onto the hull so it doesn't pull away from the vertical piece and create an air pocket. Hope that makes sense. You're getting better!!!
