Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

...Since my driveway is slanted down to the west it has taken a while to get the starboard seam and rivets underwater. Are you with me:p

Sorta lol, I think it has to do with the curvature of the earth as my starboard side too, was slow to get wet ;)

My keel drip was one every three seconds or so...I want her dry before I put in the foam & deck, after that the bilge pump will be my friend :D

The first two photos are after I cleaned her out earlier.

Man Huron, you did such an excellent job of cleaning out that hull! I hope mine turns out half that nice!

I could comb my hair in that mirror finish on the inside (if I had any). Your hard work sure is paying off big time! Looks great!

I hope to test that theory out before too long:D

Hey thanks, the hull is clean if you don't count the old vinyl adhesive. I'm not crossing that bridge, hopefully the new vinyl adheres to the old residue.

LOL Thanks Broadcast, I plan to get some fish slime and blood on her in the not-too-distant future to properly re-christen her Great Lakes style:)

I did finally get the ski locker cut out, just needs some light sanding to be perfect. I'm hoping the rain can hold off for a few days so I can work on the hull in the driveway.

I've got my aluminum pieces to rivet in for the ski locker sub-floor and a couple thru-hull rivets to redo with 3M 5200.

Epoxy resin should be here today or tomorrow...and the garage is all cleared out so I can actually have room to operate. I just need two more sets of sawhorses to get it done quickly and easily.

These are the ten 6'x1/2"x.0625 aluminum pieces for my ski locker sub-floor. I know...you are all thinking "a ski locker sub what? Man, Huron finally went off the deep end"

...but it's pretty easily done, won't rot or rust and should enhance my biggest storage area so I like it.

Well here's the plan anyway...should keep stuff dry(poles, spare paddle, and of course, waterskis) and let the water drain straight back to the bilge.

The strips will be tied down with aluminum pop rivets to all the ribs so it will be solid. I was hoping to use one or two of these pieces on the bow structure also but it looks like I need all ten.

Ski locker opening is cut also.

Man I love that Huron! I am absolutely going to steal that idea and play like it's mine!

I just love how far ahead of me you guys are!

Well, till you have it on the water hauling in fish and dragging tubers around, then I'll be jealous big time.

Looks like a great solution. The only thing might be that small objects (keys?) could fall through but to remove and put back a lath should be easy enough.

Thanks...feel free to use it, no patents have been issued.:p

Thanks bananaboater, I'm hoping to get the pieces close enough together so that the eyelets on poles will not be able to fall thru, resulting in broken rods:eek:

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

I had a sweet surprise waiting for me when I got home from work today!
(this will have be modified when I buy my brand new 90hp Evinrude Etec:rolleyes:)

Thanks again NB:D

I did get the middle piece riveted down on the ribs. I realized that if you are doing this sort of thing...it is wise to rivet the middle first...then line up the ends and start heading out from the middle.

Otherwise there will inevitably be a bow in the aluminum that will simply be transferred from one section to the other. It's not a big problem since I equalized the "bow" among all the ribs so it is not noticeable(hopefully;)).

Aren't you guys glad I'm publicly making all the possible mistakes so you don't have to?

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

I just stumbled onto this site recently and signed up yesterday. Your doing an excellent job posting your progress. I would have done the same when I rerigged my 1983 16' Sport a couple years ago. Finished pics on my profile. When I got mine it was in very good shape except 1 day it blew off its mooring and bounced off some rocks for a while. The hull was badly damaged and the general opinion around here is it was scrap. Not to make a long story; I hammered, cut, welded, and faired out with a flexable epoxy concoction I made. Here are before and after pics. Now I have a new project that is patiently awaiting my attention that is what brings me here. 1970 18' Starchief OB. A complete over haul is in order. I may start my own thread to get this going. ATTACH]51112[/ATTACH]

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

This is where I added more storage space. My ski locker is open from stem to stearn. Sooo I added a hinged floor hatch aft of the existing locker and one way up front. They are hard to see in the pics because I cut the carpet after I glued it down. For even more storage I have another hinged panel to access the Foxhole under a removable pad. The boxes the swivel seats sit on is storage too, they are hinged to tilt forward.
You must be getting excited to geterdone. :D

Thanks, this is the right place to be for starcraft restorations:)

You should absolutely start a resto thread and show us what you're up to on the new rig. Your SS looks great, and the outboard too.

Two new rivets, doused in 3M 5200.

I did a little test fitting on the new submersible LEDs. I won't even need to drill, there are holes in the perfect location.

I will be using the old brackets and lights on my new trailer for the 12' AeroCraft so I'm happy about that.:)

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Here are three pieces of the ski locker pieces, riveted down with 8 rivets into the ribs for each piece. I will be buying a third 50 pack of aluminum rivets to finish these.

I was able to recruit some free labor to help get the 5200 in the right places and nowhere else;)

Now that it's warmer outside we can have our two boys play in the yard and actually get lots of work done:D

Roslynn is in charge of the vinyl and she informed me that we will be getting all of that cut tonight. I'm guessing that the epoxy resin must be here tomorrow. No sign of it yet.
