One bow bench piece done and one to go.

This is the kicker bracket I scored for $30:D

It might get some new plywood...but seems very strong and ready to use if needed. Maybe just a few coats of spar varnish for the summer?

Nice boxes and great kicker bracket, for $30, nice!

Hey, listen...

If you go for that boat for sure and let me know! I'll meet you in Mt. Pleasant on your way up and I'll help ya get her hooked up! (I know you can do it on your own, I just like to feel needed, work with me here)

Cheers Buddy!:D

Very nice work HA on the bow structure. I KNOW what a pain that can be. I like the way you decided to cut it.

Thanks J, can't beat the price, he had them listed for $50 and dropped it to $30 right before I contacted him.

I can't really pick up another boat right now:eek:...as much as I'd like to...I may have to start storing at least one boat up north for the winter to make room for next year's project(if I finish my current two boat projects).

Same for you though, if ya need help dragging an old tin can home let me know!:)

Thanks, it certainly has been a challenge(not having good templates) to say the least. I still need to sand a few edges before epoxy by this weekend and cut the ski locker but we are almost done cutting plywood:D

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Hey thanks HSF, but my skills are not up to par with Kraftsman Kenny lol your bow piece is still making me rethink my plans.

BTW I had you pegged as more of an Al Borlan LOL :D.

I am curious if this is a good price on aluminum. I'm buying 10 pieces of 6'x1/2"x.0625 for 50 bucks. It seems like a good deal to me so I ordered it from a local Harbor Freight type place.

I will be using it to build my ski locker sub-floor and stiffening the bow structure a bit with riveted cross pieces.

I'm gonna buy it either way, just curious if I'm getting a deal or not.

I cut the last piece for the bow bench seats and it all fits together fairly well:)

It still needs some sanding and I'm going to cut a 45 angle onto the tops of the console pieces possibly. Just waiting for the shipment of epoxy resin now.

Great wood work. One more milestone crossed off.

The kicker bracket looks solid as well. Looks just like mine. Some new plywood and epoxied up it will be just as good as new. The mechanical portion look just like mine.

Looking really good Huron!

I'll be watching close your progress with the epoxy! I am just about to pull the trigger on a bunch and get going on my transom.

Cheers!

Well...I do like me flannel shirts :D {and Heidi ;)}
Don't know much about pricing alum, but if it will work for what you want, great pricing I'd say!

Keep up that great work!

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

I took all the wood and consoles back out of the rig today. I will be taking a trip to one of the local lakes to see if she is leaking or not soon.

I took her outside today and parked her in the sun...got the 80hp merc fired up on muffs using the electric choke and the key and I'm happy about that:D

She still doesn't like to start unless the cowling and jacket are off and you spray some 50:1 mix directly into the carbs. Obviously some issues there to be adressed.

I'm going to keep the SS in the driveway for a while so I can use the garage to do the epoxy. I need to test out the cover also:)

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Well she is all covered up for the night. It will fit better once the windshield is bolted on. In the meantime I will just take it off if it is going to rain.

It's all bare aluminum inside and needs to be cleaned out so I hope it does rain LOL.

The cover is from a 17' Sea Nymph Fishing Machine that is a little skinnier, but it seems to be perfect.

Overall, I'm extremely happy about this boat cover, it was free...it fits...and it's a neutral color. :D:D

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Lots of rain here in the Lansing area this weekend:rolleyes: I guess it's ok since the boat isn't done yet anyway.;)

I am getting the bare aluminum hull cleaned out tonight...will be double checking all limber holes prior to screwing the deck down.

I will be doing a leak test to make sure she will be dry also. After that I'm going to get the ski locker cut out and drill out all the holes for the pedestal seat bases.

It's nice working in my garage now that the rig's in the driveway:D

Hope your leak test goes better than mine did...got me a hidden one under the center stringer...And I really need to add an extension to my garage so I can get her in to play with once in a while....stay dry my friend!

Now ya had to go and jinx me didn't ya LOL :D

Yes I also have a center leak ...but I don't have a center stringer.

It drips out of the bleeder hole in the bottom keel. I am not overly concerned because it honestly drips only once every 3-5 minutes.

What I'm really pumped about is the fact that all 9 of the rivets that I replaced are as dry as...well they are dry.(sorry for the lack of amusing analogy)

I did locate two rivets on the starboard stern bottom hull that I will be replacing. Too bad I didn't do this prior to the gluvit:rolleyes:

Overall I'm very happy with the leak test. I can handle a few drips every couple minutes and I will be adding another coat of gluvit or epoxy over the keel rivets since I don't know which one is the culprit.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Sorry about the jinx, but I was kinda lonely in that department lol

is your keel a separate piece? mine is and with the stringer centered over it, makes it hard to figure where it's coming from. If you have a drip coming out of there you should be able to just run a brush width of gluvit down the center and be good, or am I miss understanding something?

Edit: I should double read before posting , I see your not sure where either and gonna hit them again...I need a drink lol

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

I need a drink lol

I'm drinking Coronas tonight...feel free to join me:D

The drip has accelerated a bit(normally acceleration is a good thing:rolleyes:) as I have continued to add water to the rig.

Since my driveway is slanted down to the west it has taken a while to get the starboard seam and rivets underwater. Are you with me:p

I've been scoping out the rest of the rivets with my new spotlight, and I just found one more leaker. I really don't mind replacing these, it won't take long and the 3m 5200 seems to have worked well with the 3/16" pop rivets.

I will post some boring pics later:)
