Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Here are the rest of the pics for today. We started off tackling the remaining zinc on the bottom, then got to the sides near the bow.

Considering the trailer work I got done too, not a bad day of progress.

We picked up a huge container(64 oz) of the Citristrip gel to finish the job. It was around $19 so not too bad.

Forgot to add one detail...see that ^^^ dent in the bow?

Somebody apparently really whacked the dock piling one day, or maybe a power-loading gone wrong?

It won't affect the boat's performance so no biggie.

I had never even noticed it before, but as soon as it's bare metal all the imperfections are easily spotted.

I'm fine with that since they add character to the boat.:D

Here's the gratuitous shot of yours truly doing some work:)

You guys are making quick work of that paint. I like the "character line" , shows it's used and not a trailer queen. 'Bout time to see you working. LOL. She's gonna be a nice family boat.

Ohhh man I remember that part... One coat of paint would have been nice but nope mine had had like 4.... About the time i stripped one side i was done with it. I then found a local guy who did soda blasting... He did the whole boat... inside and out for a little over $200. It was sort of a blessing too cuz that carpet adhesive on the inside was pissin me off as well.

Boats looking great Mike! Congrats! Keep at her!

Definitely not a trailer queen:)

I hear ya, but it's not that easy. The stripper is removed by brushing it and then with the shop vac. I was just spraying the bare metal to make it shiny.

I should park it at the end of the driveway though, you are right about that.

I'm sure I will add some more character as time goes on too.:)

$200 isn't too bad, I did call a couple media blasting companies and left messages, but got no response.

This method works ok as long as you have lots of time to deal with.

I'm hoping to get the rest stripped tonight, we'll see how that goes.

Nope, that dent is gonna stay. It makes it look like the boat is winking at you;)

Once you get a tin boat you can hammer away WnG:D

Some more pics, here is what Roslynn was able to get done while I was at work.

She took the paint off the strakes/chines/whatever they're called on each side.:)

This was a real nice surprise since it started raining while I was driving home from work.:(

Then we went ahead and applied a huge coat right before the real rain came, so the both of us got to scrub the boat for a while out there.

For some reason the Admiral wants to leave the yellow for now "just to see how it looks", so there it remains for now.

I'm in favor of removing all the paint now since we have templates but I'm not about to push the issue with my best help;)

Here you can see where I took the orbital sander to the hull. Those darker spots and pits are actually bare aluminum that needs to be smoothed out quite a bit. The shine comes right back with some 220 grit sandpaper.

I did not plan on taking this to a mirror finish so I'm not sure how much I should worry about the bottom.

On the bottom, I wouldn't do much more than whatever a scotch-brite and some elbow grease would get you. I'm REAL leery of sanding over rivets.

HA - silly question, but how are you managing to strip around the yellow. I haven't seen masking. If I tried that, well it wouldn't be nice. If the Admiral wants to keep the yellow, you know. Gonna be one sharp looker!

You are correct, we have not taped anything off at all, just staying inside the lines:)

The whole idea is just to see what it looks like stripped down to bare metal except for the yellow stripes. Then we'll strip the yellow off and start from scratch painting the new stripes.

As I mentioned, I'd just as soon strip it all off now since I have a good idea what it will look like:)

Great weather today for working so we made some progress.:)
