Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Looks like you're making lightning speed progress, by my standards!

One of the reasons I decided not to strip my topside, besides mostly sound paint, was that I already have the interior painted and I didn't want to mess it up and have to re-do it. And I didn't want to go to the trouble of masking off the whole dang thing. Is stray stripper an issue for you as far as the interior?

It's lookin' real good!

Wow zip strip didn't work like that nice progress got the paint ready ?

Thanks Yooper. No, I don't have the paint ready. Just taking it one step at a time.:)

I'm using the 3M disk and flapper sanding disk to strip the gunwales, since I don't want to deal with problems like dripping it on the interior vinyl.

When I have sprayed the stripper I just try to aim it so none can get in the boat.

It takes way longer on the gunwales this way, and next time I restore a boat I will try to do things in the proper order:facepalm::D

Thanks LL, I need to go help clean up the winter boat storage facility this afternoon so I needed to make some headway this morning.:)

(I have heard rumors of possibly taking out the canoe and going fishing if we get the work done...so this might be all for today:D)

Final touch up coat of epoxy resin on the transom. Nearing the finish line on the transom, thankfully.:)

We are going to use this huge paper to make a template for the stripe. We will see how that goes.

More of the same on the splashwell.

This is the last part of the gunwale that needs paint removed.

I need to either polish up these windshield frames, or paint them. Not sure on that one yet.

Tiny bit of corrosion on the CMC bracket will be cleaned up with the wire wheel before bolting it on.

I tested it the other day to make sure everything is in order. I really like this bracker.:D

I'm going to try to shape this foam into wedges so they will fit behind each side panel.

I will be leaving room to run wiring thru a pvc pipe on the starboard side.

What did you use to glue your vinyl down?

Thanks Glen, we used the Nautolex 88 adhesive, that came with the marine vinyl. It worked pretty well.

Well here is where I left off for the day. Nice to see some metal showing.:D

Now I'm off to clean the boat garage. I managed to convince the rest of my crew to help out so it should be a fun evening.:)

You can tell that the stuff under the paint is some zinc chromate primer.:)

HA, that looks awesome I love the nautolex up the sidewalls. Every time I see that I waiver on doing it myself. I may have just wasted a couple quarts of Rusto on mine.

Thanks fellas, I agree that Nautolex is great stuff.

I have to make sure that I don't put it everywhere and go overboard.:)

Great weather this morning for stripping paint:D

Yeah, that's on my list of things to buy.

Looking forward to seeing how nice I can get the dull old trim with a bit of work.:)

Has anyone tried to using a buffing wheel on a bench grinder? That might make some the work a little easier with the pieces off of the boat.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

I know some of you like the "chrome look";) but I just used the green ball on all my trim to get a nice satin finish. That seems to hide all the defects better, and I've got a lot of them. If yours isn't too beat up, the chrome look might be the way to go.

I don't have a bench grinder, but I have a very old Shopmaster drill press and cranked the belt up to the biggest pulley. Man, was that baby hummin'! It polished up real quick.

Almost done with the starboard gunwale. I need to figure out how to get the edges.

Maybe some paint stripper on a rag, then a toothbrush to scrape the paint off. We'll see.:)

I've been thinking about possibly lowering the rear rollers one hole, to let the boat float shallower.

What do you guys think? I have guide bunks that will be on each side, so I can prevent the side of the hull from making contact with the fenders.

The boat is sitting closer to the wheel on the starboard side, there will be more room when it's properly centered.

In addition, since I can't lower the forward rollers at all, this will let the bow sit higher on the trailer, so water flows out the bilge better.

Not sure if there is a downside to this plan, I'm sure it will appear after I try it out.

HA, can't offer you much advice on the trailer as I'm still just feeling mine out. As far as getting into the corners with the stripper :D (sorry, I thought we'd had enough of that by now), I found that a small steel brush cleaned them right out after soaking with stripper.
