Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Been working on getting all the corners and edges on the splashwell too. The 3M drill attachment is working the best for me.

I will need to pick up more Citristrip, probably should try to get it in a bucket to save money.

When I did my SS there were no holes in the shelf you are describing. I just put a large bead of PL Premium in there and then wiped off the excess when I bolted everything in through the transom skin. I guess what I am trying to say is that the holes you have there were more than likley not original.

Great progress you're making. I get what you're talking about now! I had such a hard time understanding because my Jet Star is not as complicated!

In your case, I would go with SS screws & 5200.

I would NOT put those screws back in the shelf. They are unnecessary and why put holes in the most vulnerable part of the wood?

I almost finished taking the paint off the cross beam top face after dinner.

Progress is halted however, due to intense lightning and a tornado watch.

Maybe we can get the rest of the transom painted in the garage, or else I'm taking a break;)

Less work to do, sounds ok with me. Feel free to let me know if anything else I'm doing is wrong:D

Good points made. You can always change your mind if something vibrates or buzzes & drives you crazy.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Well it's a good thing I moved the freshly painted transom into the house quickly.:D

We are getting some serious rain and lightning tonight.

It's still tacky so I will wait to paint the other side tomorrow.

As always I'm in no big rush, just glad to make some progress when I can.

I'm leaning towards bolting up the bracket directly to the transom with no exterior wood or cutting board.

I believe that inches make a difference for weight balance, and that CMC bracket has the motor levered out enough already.:)

LL...I hope the only buzzing is the sweet hum of a Mepps right before a monster Pike hits the lure;)

Yah, that was a good size storm last night, pretty good show:)

Yup, X2 what EZ posted there. I opted not to put those screws back in too. My transom was locked solid by something like 30ish through bolts. Another row of screws (especially in that area) I felt just invited spots for water to invade and would be a mute point as far as strength. I actually took it a step further and ran a little PL along the top edge of that shelf and in each of the holes to prevent water from sitting around in there.

Good progress buddy, you are moving along:)

Transom is painted, not sure if I should go with two coats, we covered it pretty well with the first.

I got the boat all rinsed off, just tilted the bow up and let it sit in the rainstorms we've ben getting the last couple of days.:)

I got the top face of the lateral beam stripped, now to start on the interior sides.

Looking forward to a day or two without rain so we can bolt in the transom and be done with it. Then I will need to get my paper templates made for the stripes before taking all the rest of the paint off.

I'm starting to lean more towards replacing all the rollers with bunks on the trailer. I need to start planning on that so the boat doesn't get marked up with these old black rollers anymore.

Roslynn told me we should just order all new Stolz orange rollers, but they seem pretty pricy compared to going with bunks if you ask me.

Go bunks my friend. Take the money you save on those Stoltz and buy one of these...

You may not have quite enough to cover the controls but close;)

I left a few black marks on mine last night. I put her back on the trailer. I should of painted the rollers to see if it would stop the black marks...PO slopped a bit of paint on them from painting the boat on the trailer already.

I shot video of flipping her back over.

What are the drawbacks of bunks???

For our small lightweight boats? None.

For larger boats I could see how you'd need to have the trailer deeper to facilitate easier winching.

The transom is painted, and I got some more varnish done on the AeroCraft transom.

The little boat is gonna get splashed next week so we can do some fishing:D

I've got some malt vinegar and tartar sauce that I don't want to go bad so it's beyond my control;)

I will get some photos up shortly:)

I love how the burden of responsibility is pinned on condiments. You are a true fisherman Mike;):D

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Has anyone tried to using a buffing wheel on a bench grinder? That might make some the work a little easier with the pieces off of the boat.

Hi Huron, looks like you are making really great progress. My dad owns a vacuum shop and we rebuilt used Kirby vacuums. They were cast aluminum housings and we used a buffing wheel on them to make them shine like new. I think a bench grinder wont have enough torque. We used a dryer motor with a buffing wheel attachement.
