Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Thanks yooper, she's looking nice under the paint. l like the bare metal look.:)

I was able to sand a bit last night, then got to go to my older son's first T-ball game:D

He is a lefty, and went opposite field down the 3rd base line for a single.;)

Got some more sanding done after the game, about half of the bow cap is free of paint, and half of the starboard gunwale.

I am still leaning towards a 70hp Johnnyrude, but could not help picturing this Yammie hanging off the transom, on a clear day, walleye fighting to bite my lures...:D

Remember when I said that a 3 cyl JohnnyRude was the ideal engine for a 16' SC? Well what I really meant was they're ideal only if you can't afford a Yammie 85/90 :p

What time will you be at the house so I can drop it off? Nevermind, just leave the cash under the mat and I will park your new shed out back;)

BTW it may or may not still have the catalytic converter:)

Yup...I knew you'd like that one.:D

Anyone know a good web site to sell a spare kidney?

You have a spare?

Hey, how about an endorsement/ad? let a website or business wrap your boat for advertisement purposes. Then it will pay for the yamaha.

Well, here's what she looked like after I called it quits last night.

I'd say this $9 random orbital has paid for itself a few times so far.

This is the current status. That's what I like to call progress these days. We are getting there slowly.

I take the boat way out where not many people would be around to see it, so it might not be a good investment other than cars driving by while she's parked in the driveway.:)

If iboats wants to buy the Yammie I'd allow a hideous ad on my boat as long as I get free impellars and spark plugs for life.:D

The neighbors must love us with all the grinding going on around here.

My bow looks almost identical after yesterday, not quite as much paint had to come off though. I looked like someone dusted me with yellow pixie dust, just like you I would imagine.

Cool you got to do all that sanding outside - EVERYTHING in my garage has a dusting of blue/white:facepalm:

At least I was smart enough to cover the Merc before I made a mess.

Here's the obligatory "applying even more epoxy resin" shot.:)

We are almost done with the resin, which is great because we are also nearly depleted on the stuff.

Here's what the topsides are looking like as of now.

I took the afternoon off work to work on the boat, since it was overcast and in the 60s. A nice break from doing paint prep in 90 degree heat.

This is the corner that I made into an epoxy reservoir using masking tape. This method has served me well for damaged pieces of plywood.

I paid extra for the arauco and proceeded to tear it up a bunch while I was improving my woodworking skills.

I'm off to use some goof off to remove some stickers and adhesives off the interior and splashwell.

Waiting for my cordless drill to charge forces me to think of new things to work on, which is good for progress!

I hear ya...I have been getting some strange looks this week.:)

Well, luckily we get a steady breeze here and doing this in the driveway is working out great. There's a huge field across the street that lets the wind really pick up.

Yeah I had to wait until now to start taking paint off or else I would've done the same in yellow at my winter boat shop.

That might not have gone over so well since they have a few valuable antique refrigerators stored there too.:D

I agree, at least the Merc didn't get turned into a 4.3 Smurf I/O.:)

I think it's great when you wake up from your afternoon siesta and snap a shot of all the hard work Roz is doing on the SS;):D

I'm seeing some great progress there Mike, excellent:)

If only I could convince her to help out with the paint prep.:)

Yep we are cruising along, this is going faster than I thought believe it or not. I'm 80% done with all topside prep now.

The splashwell and starboard aft gunwale is left to strip and then we can go ahead and install the transom. Once that's bolted in we can proceed to flip the boat over for the real task at hand.:)

I think the flip will go more smoothly with the transom holding things together. Not sure if I should paint the SS bolt heads and washers too, or leave them bare metal?

Glad to see I'm not the only one with a garage that looks like a tornado's been through it HA!

TII

LOL...you should've see it before I cleaned, swept and organized everything last week;)

Not many tornadoes in these parts, that's 100% man-made disaster:D

Good to see the wife is making some progress:D I'm thinking I'll stick my transom back in before the flip as well also put the bow back together so she doesn't flatten like a tin can I think. Maybe I missed it what color is it gonna be ??
