Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Good to see the wife is making some progress:D I'm thinking I'll stick my transom back in before the flip as well also put the bow back together so she doesn't flatten like a tin can I think. Maybe I missed it what color is it gonna be ??

Yoop, I'm leaning towards bare metal on the bottom with the yellow stripes as they were from the factory.

Topsides will be light grey. We have been known to change our minds on this so we will see:)

No updates/photos over the weekend, had a bad episode involving a huge mug of hot coffee and a laptop.:facepalm:

The transom is epoxied, the edges are getting some extra coats for good measure. Glad to be almost done with the resin.:D

I picked up some new tools to attack the paint with, a 3M scotch pad drill attachment, 3M sanding block, stiff brush, and some biodegradable Citri-Strip. I tested the stripper out on the stern last night and it worked great.

I let it sit for about an hour, used the stiff little brush on it and then sprayed it off with a normal hose. I'm borrowing a power washer tonight to speed things up a bit.

I have some of that citristrip and it seems to work as good as any chem I've tried so far (2 more to go). Smells good too. A big paint scraper works well in the corners but may leave scratched you'll have to sand out.
Thinking about a brite silver paint for the bottom of mine. I might use the Sherwin Williams Top Coat they can make any color I want.
Nice progress!!!!

Glad to hear the citristrip works I'll probably try that on my next project as I wasn't particularly impressed with either of the strippers I tried. It must be a good feeling to be almost done with epoxy I have yet to begin:mad:Sounds like quite a bit of progress (although no pics to prove it ??:D) Keep at it man I'm waiting to hear the splash :)

Epoxy, stripping and painting have been in my head for so long! I remember when hearing the word stripper made me smile. Now I get the image of an old boat with like 20 coats of paint on it and I'm holding a dull butter knife! If I ever meet a guy who soda blasts he WILL become my new best friend. No one but us can appreciate how much work is involved. Can't wait to see how that Citri works.

There are definitely good strippers and bad strippers. Glad Citristrip is a good one :)

Seeing the bare hull was gratifying but more work than I thought. Still talking boats here :)

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Managed to get another final coat of resin on the transom last night.:)

I started on the Epifanes clear varnish too, to add UV protection.

I'm testing that out on the transom for my AeroCraft first, while the resin is curing on the SS transom. So far it looks great and it's way easier to deal with than the epoxy.:D

The only problem with the Citristrip so far is when I sprayed it with the hose it splashed and killed some grass. I might be taking this operation to a self car wash facility instead. Not sure what

Other than that, I could also just scrape off the paint and shop vac it up, we'll see.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

I just posted a pic on my thread of my WMDs. My scraper is on the RH side and is black. Works good unless minor scratches scare you. I can scrape off untreated paint if I really want to. Plastic puddy knifes suck IMO.

I can picture you at the car wash applying citri in the booth all day till you get kicked out.

I agree with you on both counts Mike, plastic putty knives do suck big time. And I can see HA getting an escort out of the car wash and asked to never come back.

Just hit the car wash later in the night or maybe on a rainy day;)

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Haven't gotten much done with the rain we've been getting. T-ball game was even rained out last night. Too bad cause out kids LOVE to play in the rain/mud:)

I have not pursued the car wash idea, I kinda feel the same about it. I might opt to scrape it all off and just use the shop vac.

I still need to remove the paint off the starboard gunwale, the 3M scotch disk works much better than the flapper wheel, and allows me to get closer to the trim on all the edges.

Hopefully I can get the transom coated in the clear varnish so it can be bolted in this weekend. Then I will have to test float it and make sure she stays dry, and I know where that will happen.

The bluegill, sunfish and perch are biting at my favorite secluded fishing hole:D

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Spent some quality time with the cordless drill/3M disk last night.

Making progress, no pics. See previous photos of paint removal and imagine less paint.:)

The starboard gunwale is almost done, then on to the splashwell. Still need to touch up the transom with another light coat of resin, then varnish for UV blockers.

Hopefully I can get some templates made for the stripe, so I can proceed with removing all the paint on the exterior hull.

That will be some major progress, along with the transom being bolted in, which probably will have to wait until early next week.

I'm really happy with the Epifanes varnish, thanks to WoodOnGlass for the recommendation.:)

Nice progress I can Imagine less paint and it looks good in my mind:) Of course most things do as there are lots of pretty colors and old ACDC songs playing in there :D So the varnish goes over the epoxy for extra UV protection ? Sand first or just slap it on ? I'm guessing only area UV is an issue is above splashwell are you doing both sides with this stuff or just the front ? Might be something else I need to get I guess

Are you really desiring the natural wood look for the transom or something? I'd just paint the thing above the splashwell.

I should probably just be painting everything and covering it with vinyl like everyone else does, but I like some exposed wood...and doing things the hard way.

I lightly sanded, and ground down any drips. The varnish goes on easily, they recommend thinning it less each coat and sanding with 220 after each light coat.

I don't have any paint thinner, so I skipped that step and it still laid down nicely.

I will probably paint the side of the transom that will be hidden with grey rustoleum for the heck of it.

You are correct, only above the splashwell is it really needed. I may also use it on my side panels if they do not get painted, which is what I am leaning towards at the moment.

They get a decent amount of sun, well in Michigan at least 3 months out of the year anyways.:D

I've gone back and forth on this in my head for a while now. The benefit of just painting it is in case any fuel gets splashed it won't delaminate the varnish or resin, so I probably should keep it simple and paint it.

I do like the bare wood look, so I can tell it's no longer treated wood:D

Good to know it's not something else I need:D I've probably got enough rusto to paint an aircraft carrier so everything's getting painted here:cool:

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

So I decided to try to strip all the paint off here in the driveway. I sprayed some Citristrip on the splashwell...five minutes later it had the paint all bubbled up and it came off easily.

Instead of using the hose to rinse it all off and kill some more grass, I just used the shop vac and had no issues.

One more round of this and it should be bare metal. I am very happy about how well this stuff works.
