Lookin good HA! Seems we were both up to the same thing this evening. I had problems as well but just sat back and drank another beer, soothed my nerves and re-did my aft piece.

LOL I haven't had a beer yet...might be a long night since I took the day off tomorrow so I can work on the rig. I will probably be running up to the store soon.;)

Funny you mention aft piece...I just finished trimming the starboard edge for the third time and coated with epoxy. I am just waiting around for that to cure enough to finish the deck:)

I still have to get a top coat of epoxy on the deck tonight so it will bond together nicely.

Yep, HA, you're on the home straight now! Great work. I've got pedestal boxes with one rectangular opening in each. They're great for storing tackle boxes and ropes etc and I put my (velcro'd in) seat cushions in them when storing the boat. The boxes have four snap buttons in each for cushions for extra seating. They're bolted to L brackets which are in turn bolted to the floor. I can take some photos if you'd like... cheers,

If it makes you feel any better......I have the exact same uneveness on that bow piece/middle piece joint. Totall covered by the bow platform. And although my backing plates did fit fine over my stringers....I apparently missed my mark a bit with the seat placement as it would seem that only about 4 of 6 lags went into them. Oh well, as you said, 3/4" ply is still probably plenty of meat. Good progress! I'm expecting a monster update from you today :)

Yah know, the other thing you could do is just notch out your stringers to receive the extra ply beef. I don't think it would compromise the strength as you'll surely be riveting all along the stringer. Just thinking, eh!

The entire deck is attached with screws coated in 5200, it fits now(since it got trimmed with a circular saw last night:rolleyes:) and has the first of two top coats of epoxy resin.

I put two coats on the edge I had to cut last night and one thick one this morning, so there was a major delay while that cured but it's sealed just as well as the rest of the deck:)

I also assembled the steering, it's ready to be bolted into place.

Wow, good on you for taking the time to seal where you cut the pedestals reinforcements. I'm sure I would have just said f&*k it. Deck looks great.

On your dash panel, what are you plans for finishing it? I can't quite tell but did you epoxy it enough that it will have a nice smooth finish when painted? or are you covering it with something.

Thanks, as far as the dash- I will either cover with vinyl or paint it gray. It does have a nice coat of epoxy on it. I guess some folks would throw some spar varnish over it and leave the natural wood look. Not sure yet.

I only have three switches and a trim/tilt control so my dash is going to be boring. I hope to get a tach soon though.

I've gone ahead and decided that I'm not going to bring the SS this weekend. It obviously needs time for the epoxy to cure. We are doing one more coat before the vinyl goes down.

It was a great tool in motivation though...and the real goal of being ready for a walleye tourney on the St. Joe river on June 5th is going to be accomplished.:D

I like how you did the reinforcement for the pedestals. I wondered if you were going with the threaded backing plates, but that should work very well.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Gonna be out of town for a couple days, letting the epoxy get fully cured. There are two coats on the top that are going to give it a nice smooth finish which should help with the vinyl.

When I get back- the vinyl will be ready to be attached to the deck and the sides. Can't wait to get this thing on the water. Hopefully later next week we will test her out:D

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Great work HA. I've been keeping up with you and EZ's progress. I had to jump in with a couple suggestions. First the pedistal, get some 1/8" aluminum and mount that on the underside of the floor and then double it to run each side of the stringer. Heck, you may even attach it to the stringer itself. That will give you all the strength you need. Second, on your vinyl, you have the right idea in folding half over, glue, set and repeat on opposite side. Make SURE the vinyl is warm, that makes it pliable. When you spread the glue...wait...the glue has gasses that need to escape and laying the vinyl down too soon is what causes bubbles. As you lay the vinyl, firmly run your hands back and forth as it makes contact untill you get to the edge. Never "plop" the vinyl down. BTW usually you can tell when to set the vinyl when the glue is very tacky. Again, great work gentlemen, dale

Dale, that's some great information/ideas on the vinyl and the pedestal bases. I appreciate the tips:)

I hope I can find aluminum that thick for a decent price.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Just got back in town and checked out the deck. The epoxy is fully cured and that deck acts like one piece of wood when you walk on it.

I had my 2-year-old son help me test it out a bit. He loves the boat and was doing laps around the ski locker:D

The seams got a bond that will be solid. I took a piece of tape and sealed the seam on the bottom side and let the resin fill the void in between which was maybe 1/16".

It has worked out very well and the whole thing just needs one more coat for good measure and it is done.:)

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Get any fish in Kalamazoo? :) I was going to let you know that crappie are good eating. I always release the bass I get, but them crappie are in for a surprise when I get a mess of them:eek: Fillet 'em up and throw 'em on the grill, my oh my:p Actually I introduced my girls into fishing with those critters. Once you find a school the kids catch them all day long, and I don't even get a chance to fish, Too busy helping/watching them. Now THATS fishing at its best. Oh, and one more thing for EZ, I would NEVER suggest someone not follow your lead. You two are doing great work and by sharing with us, you help dummies like me get each step closer to floating metal.;) Dale
