Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

EZ makes a good point with going the portable route, I forgot that you guys don't need gigantic tanks and fuel stations that allow you to pump more than $75 at a time.

Yah, I have a bunch of epoxy on the workshop floor, no biggie, it's a workshop.

Fish, huh, imagine that. Well, maybe someday.

Cheers!

You fish out of a boat? I thought these for where for work, frustration and something to spend money on. :D

All the more reason to get cracking! Hey, I fish from my boat, but so far this season I've caught nothing more than seaweed and a cold! :D

Nice little fish HA, can you eat them?

This is the last fish I caught, so long ago I can't remember (gotta stop drinking beer on the boat!) - a 3lb Flathead. Great eating!

Triton, I've never filleted any yet but once we get a whole cooler full we will fry some up.

Down south they love 'em and I've heard they are similar to bluegill and walleye, which are both pretty tasty fried up with some vinegar:)

Is that a flathead shark? I'd imagine you could catch all sorts of different weird species down your way:D

Haha I have epoxy all over the friggin' floor.

My basement has permanent epoxy outlines of all of my deck panels. Oops. Wife wasn't thrilled when she found out I was using the Wusthof kitchen shears to cut glass cloth either.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

So the deck is ready to attach tomorrow:D

I am taking the afternoon off work and also thursday all day so I can accomplish a few things here and there...let's be serious...I am gonna have to put in some serious time to get her ready by thursday/friday. Still not entirely sure that is feasible:p

The edges are all done and I am pumped to turn the corner on the deck. The real challenge is going to lie in the marine vinyl. We've planned our strategy and talked it thru a few times and I think we are ready.

I have been moving stuff from the garage to the basement so I can put the boat back in there...and that's a project in and of itself.

I could really use a two-boat garage.;)

No pics yet, back to work for now:)

No, HA, they're not related to sharks, here they're just called flathead. They come in two main species - dusky and sandy. They grow to about a metre long but once over 70 odd cm they're all breeding females so we have to put the biggest ones back. They make for superb white flesh fillets - here's some more info: http://www.rawfish.com.au/flathead-the-finest-fish-fillet/

Weird species -yep, here's one I caught earlier... a Banjo Shark.

On the vinyl I don't have too much specific advice...I only know that what I did didn't work out well. Some ideas I have are to make sure the adhesive is applied as evenly and flat as you can. I think the instructions might have said to coat both surfaces. I didn't do that because I was working alone and it would have been a messy nightmare. However, it may have helped my air bubble problem. Diligently work out any bubbles you encounter. They won't get better :p. It would be best if you had a helper for the whole process.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Thanks for the info EZ, hopefully this goes somewhat smoothly. We already cut the piece of vinyl and are planning to fold it, start in the middle and lay it flat as it gets unfolded. Maybe a squeegee to smooth it out?

It does say to apply to both surfaces, not sure if we are going to try that as it seems like it would be difficult.

When you did yours was it easily adjusted after it was set onto the deck, or did it stick right away?

Also, what is the curing time on the adhesive(ballpark)?

As long as you aren't sticking the whole darn piece down at once...it should be able to be adjusted easily for a pretty good amount of time.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

First major debacle...as it turns out my plywood backing plates for the pedestal bases are right above the stringers and will not work.:(

I failed to measure this until after I had them attached with set screws and coated both sides with epoxy. Stupid I know!

I am going to just build boxes for both seats and mount the bases on those. I can still use the backing plates at least. Double positive, more storage and solid seats.

The rest is going well so far. I am ready to put down the rest of the deck. I am happy with the amount of foam so far. I will be adding more under the gunwales.

There are also 6 noodles under that pink sheet, giving her plenty of flotation in the stern where it's needed the most.

I drew some plum lines to tell me where to drill to get stringer underneath.

You could cut or chisel out slots in the backing plates to allow clearance for the stringers. Just a thought...

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Wait! All is not lost! How about building on top of rather than under neath??

Check MTribe's post #105 here...

I don't know if/how your vinyl might stretch over something like that??

The extra storage would sure be nice with boxes, but on the other had, you don't have a giant boat so the pedestal provides the extra foot room, eh.

Just thinking out loud here because I can't come hang out with ya in your garage.:D

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Thanks for the ideas guys, I will probably be sitting on a pfd on a cooler while I ponder this one for a bit:)

I could go back with the pedestal bases and garelick bolts thru the one sheet of 3/4" ply. It is epoxied heavily so it is very strong.

I've got 2/3 deck pieces attached with 5200 and I just need to run to the store for more drill bits to get the third piece done.

Then I can really get to work!

Yah, I always call that my "hand on hips" time. I stand there and stare and think. And think and stare. With my hand on my hips.

My little ones even know what it looks like...

"So what are ya thinking about dad?"

Have fun!:D

I feel your pain Mike, I went and attached my deck and forgot to add the backers I cut, I'm going to use them on top, I'll try do a nice job, but at this point as long as they're secure I'll be happy...there's always next winter to change up things if needed.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Thanks Kenny, it is a pain but not the end of the world. I have plenty else to keep busy with so that will have to wait.:)

Here are the first two deck pieces. There is one spot that's a bit uneven but it will be under the bow storage area so I will leave it as is.

It feels extremely solid even around the ski locker where it is a bit skinny.:D
