Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

I'd like to do something like this Smokercraft in the stern only with one jump seat...not two.

SMK_Millentia_192_STRN_SEATScc2.jpg

I'd like to keep most of the seats on pedestals since you can clear the deck when you need to(when fishing with just two on board)...and when I upgrade my seats later on I don't have to dismantle a box to do so.:D

To do this I will need to order more pedestal bases and posts. I'm thinking about getting one of those butt seats/leaning posts that bass boats have. Easy to store when not using it right?

Just in the Mrs steps, as she awaits that same moment in time where I disappear outside for weeks at a time. Sez she mises me when the warmer weather shows up, yet she always has an overnight bag ready for me, most of the time before I even mention getting away....ain't luv grand

Oh Yeah..Isn't that empowering?? I redid all my stringer rivets and side panel/ guwale trim..It made a HUGE difference to its rigidity..most of mine were loose or missing..Looking Good!

You can tell with every rivet that it is tying the hull together and better than the old rivets. I will be reinforcing the shelves more once the deck is in.

I have one rivet that I may redo on the bow hull. Would I want to use a closed head rivet for this one?

I suppose the SS stands for Sparty Starcraft ;)

Can't help with the rivit types, I keep waiting on you folks to make up my mind. Also forgot to mention, I like that layout in the stern and One jump seat only would leave easy access for swimming exits{re-enterance}...is that your line of thinking?

HA,
I needed a few closed end rivets and didn't want to buy 250 pieces. I used the 3/16 wide flange heads and sealed the little hole outside..and gluvit inside of the rivet.

Upon close inspection my hull looks like it came off the set of the GodFather..

Did you drill out the old ones or did you have lots of missing rivets?

I have lots of old ones that are still holding but I don't want to have them clanking around in the ribs clogging up my limber holes if I drill them out and they break apart.

Roslynn says it should be Spartycraft:D

That is what I was thinking Kenny since we will be swimming, tubing and hopefully skiing with the rig quite a bit:)

I'd like to use the pedestals so you can put seats higher if you want when drifting or anchored for fishing...and lower so we don't have anybody fall overboard when cruising.

Rivet job looks sweet Huron!

Thanks, it's easier than it looks for sure:D

I'm going to be riveting in my entire bow structure rather than bolts/nuts that could vibrate loose more easily. They are 100% aluminum too so no rusting or corrosion.

I think this one came through the side panel.

I found the riveting very addicting. I drilled out the old and replaced with new. I even started riveting stuff around home :)

HA,
I drilled out all of them. I had a dozen missing, a dozen loose. Then I vacuumed real good.
I just have that same feeling something along the way will block up a limber, be it some shavings or some sniglet of that friggin pink foam!!!!!!

No that bend was already there. They are bent like that from the factory, on both sides the same. If you check your boat it's probably there too.

My rivets haven't hit anything so far:)

I meant that is where the interior panel was riveted to the support. Sorry i should have bean more clear. I only noticed it because i just knocked those rivets the rest of the way out on mine yesterday.

They get a new rivit when you re-fasten the wood side panels.

Jeff- I will be using these for trolling primarily so that will keep my lines tight. I know what ya mean though, keeping a tight line is as important as fishing the right spot:)

Were you bottom fishing with stinkbaits?

no, was using crawlers and liver. I just read you're reply, I'm not getting the E-Mail updates. I understand there is a problem with the board currently, so I miss things.

You're coming along nicely with the boat.

I got some goodies delivered while I was at work today:D
The yellow might go on the port and starboard stern...the white probably on the trailer angle pieces.

Great deal on these and the logo on the yellow ones match the style on the '79 Starcrafts. Pretty happy to find these in the right color!

This is the vinyl dye that we will be experimenting with.

This is the tape job...the blue will be painted. The directions say to do one light coat, then wait 10min...then another and wait 10min...then one final heavy coat on top. We will see:)

Interested to know how the vinyl dye process went for you? I will be doing this in the near future.

Keep checking this thread...eventually we will get around to testing the vinyl dye. Hopefully sometime this week...and hopefully good results too:D

HA, great job my friend. I am starting to thaw out so I hope to get back to mine. On your seat dilema, keep in mind that pedestal seats will normally swivel around, so for a seat to use while you are mororing around may not be a great idea unless you get the pedistals that will lock down. I have the same desire as you. I want seats for people when I cruise but want floor room while fishing. BTW, I understand most people use tight lines catfishing, but here on the James we try to leave a slack line and give the big uns a chance to run before we set the hook. So as far as rod holders go for me, as long as a big one can't pull my pole out of the boat, it works for me;)

Thanks for the kind words Dale:) I've wrestled with this issue myself quite a bit. I'd like to have jump/back-to-back seats for stability and storage...but I really like the lightweight, movable, custom pedestal seats. Maybe I can add lockable swivels down the road.
