Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Looking good H.A., cleaning up nice. Sorry for you but glad I'm not the only one who inherited a rats nest of wiring. Hey I got that same anchor, yours must be heavier as mine has no paint left on it.

Me? I moved my computer desk today, come on already spring, we haven't had an early one in ages. Good work H.A.
LOL Kenny I keep telling myself that the wiring "isn't as bad as it looks"...lord knows how old this anchor is, I think it was my grandpa's. Works better the heavier she is:)

Hey H.A.
Grab yourself a new rivet gun. You'll be glad you did when another rivet pops. I recently bought one for my boat, and now I'm finding all kind of uses for it around the house.

I agree and I got one with a swivel head for about $23 at HD. The swivel helps in tight spaces.

Albert
I'm going to look into it...I've got two friends I can borrow a rivet gun from and decide which one I will buy. Thanks for the encouragement:)

Looks great Huron!!!! Man you did a great job cleaning out that hull! Tell ya what, when I get my deck off I let ya come up work on mine too! I'll even let you keep whatever you find under there!

Cheers Man!
Maybe when it warms up a bit, let the kids run thru the sprinkler and work on the boat works well;) I sure wish I could've powerwashed her instead though. I bet there might be some old rusty red/white daredevils or an ancient mepps spinner #4 under your old deck:D

Looks real good Huron. Can't wait to see it start going back together again.
Me too McGR...almost to the point where she starts taking shape again.:)

HA, at some point in the restore it seems as if all you do is take stuff apart and buy new stuff. I know I got to the point where I couldn't wait till I started putting things back together.

But the dismantle process is the cool part. As you take things apart you can start formulating the game plan for the build. Also, you really don't know for sure how you're going to go about the build until you've gone thru this part of the process and......you don't really know how much cash you're gonna spend:eek:

I agree, and I've spent lots of time staring at the hull mulling things over this winter. Luckily I've been able to read all the other starcraft threads for advice too. Like the "Liquid Limo" guy's thread :D

Still waiting on the IRS to send back my boat restoration money and I'll be all set. Can't decide on the plywood, thinking about marine grade maybe.

Being in the middle of my first resto job, I found the tear down portion of the project easy but at the same time stressful. It was like...

"OK I can tear this stuff apart all day. I fact I'm getting real good at this. But will I ever actually get this thing back together?"

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

McGR & E. Exactly what yall said!!!! Plus there was the trying to remember where and how everything went back together. I also spent a ton of time trying to locate replacement parts to the point of frustration:( On some items, you really have to go mcguyver or have things fabbed for you.

So with the work schedule, the weather, an at least a LITTLE prior experience, I'm still planning and scheming on the Mariner. I'm still gettin the itch to start rippin stuff out:D

HA, do yourself a favor and go with the MG if you're planning on keeping the boat....

BTW, please pm me your email addy AGAIN. I have the 66 brochure broken up into two zipped files since my sp wouldn't take me sending the whoppin big file the last time. I also just got the 69 brochure and that will complete the 60's for us:D

Yeah she's a keeper:D I'm thinking the same...EZ says that I may save $$ on epoxy using marine grade since the exterior swallows up resin like a sailor on shore leave;)

Found these on craigs, they look like they are in better condition than the merc tank that came with the rig. $50 for both seems reasonable.

Three of these old metal tanks and my new plastic one would give me 24+ gallons so that would allow plenty of tubing, skiing and exploring(if I can fit the tanks under/above the splashwell:))

I haven't bought them yet...need to drive up to Grand Rapids to get 'em.:D

They look much "newer" than my rusty old merc tank.

I'm bidding on a pair of SS flush-mount rod holders(to mount port and starboard on the gunwales) and looking at an outboard motor bracket on ebay so hopefully I will have some gear shipped out soon. I've got quite a pile of stuff that needs to be bolted back onto the rig, might as well add to it:)

Looking at this outboard bracket since it would never rot

So I need to remove this black bedliner from the gunwale aluminum piece. It's already flaking off in spots and generally looks like crap.

Flapper sanding disk and cordless drill.

And it brings back the original bare aluminum look.:) I'm going to be covering the lower section with vinyl cushions hopefully, so I may leave the stuff there, not sure yet.

Then I got to work on some rust spots from various snap-screws for a top, cleats, lights, downrigger bases, etc. This thing works great!

Hey Mike..
I haven't been too active in the threads but good job, you haven't shown a single sign of the dreaded PBO...Project Burn Out!

I even got off me arse and tinkered with the BTicket earlier today!;)

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Got my vinyl dropped off today:) I love the color and texture, looks grey from more than a few feet away.

Seems perfect for a boat, non-slip, durable and UV resistant. I've got way more on hand than I will probably need which is nice.

I may choose to use it to line the gunwale shelves and side panels since I have so much available. Any unused I can return to the guy who's working on my dad's boat.

I also got 3 1qt. cans of vinyl adhesive.

Thanks Kev...and I thought I was working super slow over here:D

I do try to get at least ONE thing accomplished every day on the rig. If you take a day off it easily becomes two...then three...then ya miss tinstock cause ya never finished the rig:eek:

Well back to it for me:)

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

I was able to track down these photos of what my boat originally looked like from the factory. Wow that's a lot of yellow:D

This was posted in another iboats thread a few years ago. It is strikingly similar to my rig only mine has been faded by the sun.

I wish it had a closer shot of the steering wheel, since mine is original except it's missing whatever was on the middle(some kind of SC logo?).

I'm thinking about going with grey cushions to match my vinyl deck since I really can't handle that much yellow:):)

Cool pics Huron! Those seats look like LayZboys. I think you are right on having a bit too much yellow, eh!

Cheers!

For a bananaboater, can there be too much yellow? Hate to admit it but in this case yes!

Gray seats sounds good to my eye.

That boat does indeed look totally original, the yellow stripe down the side is original paint pattern.

No help for you here...mine's 74"x 20+ft since we ordered 10 yards of it for my dad's boat and the yellow SS.

I have way more than I need...so I'm thinking about using it on the interior consoles and other areas too.
