Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Well...I must be getting old or something because I woke up yesterday with some back pain and that's entirely new for me:eek:

So I did take it easy yesterday(enjoyed the Michigan/Michigan St. game...MSU blew them out of the water as usual) rather than get the gluvit down as planned. Another thing slowing me down is the fact that I have some screws I removed form the transom. Someone had put them in with large doses of sillycone and I removed them all.

New rivets coated with 5200 will take their place and get her sealed up tight.

It's actually in the 50s today and I'm feeling anxious as all h#@* to get on the water. I will be bolting the transom back on "The Loon" and taking her out in the meantime. I will need to ration my fishing this spring:( or I will never finish the SS:rolleyes:

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Contrary to all my instincts I drilled a bunch of holes in the hull last night:eek:

I've been staring at a few bad rivets for weeks debating how to handle them. They weren't totally compromised, but were not fully intact either. Since the deck will not exactly be removable I figured I'd better get some new rivets in there.

One area in particular that needed attention is the bow keel section, crucial part of the hull for strength.

They will be filled with aluminum rivets and sealed with 3M 5200 fast cure on the outside...gluvit on the inside.

I really mangled one...since I foolishly drilled the rivet out from the inside:rolleyes: Don't ask why I chose to do this the wrong way:mad:

I will need to use the wire wheel to flatten out the spot for the new one...since drilling a larger hole would require a larger rivet:redface:

As NB says...remind me again why I do this?!?:D

I drilled a bunch of holes in my hull this weekend also to install patches. I installed the patches on the inside, scary drilling holes though, i feel ya.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

So these are the three rivets that I am replacing. The one on the bottom left of the pic is solid and intact. I figured to make sure I drill the right rivets...I'll just do it from the inside:rolleyes:

This shot gives you an idea where the rib in question is located in the bow. It's basically right under the U-shaped bench seating up front.

So I drilled the first rivet out from the inside and it worked beautifully...so I fired up the drill on the other two...and it didn't turn out so well. This happened on the last two that I drilled out.

You can see how I didn't drill thru the middle of the rivet head...the hole is on the side. I had to use a flashlight with the camera but you can see the problem.

I may be able to brush it smooth with the wire wheel and then install a new rivet once it sits flush?

Not sure though...and I'm open to suggestions/alternative methods.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

I also drilled 6 transom holes a bit larger to size for my 3/16 rivets.

Probably from a transducer that had been relocated multiple times by the previous owner due to prop interference(air bubbles).

These should seal up nicely with some 5200 on the rivets. My strategy is to make sure I do all the new thru-hull rivets all the same day since the 5200 fast cure is only good for 48hrs once opened.

I might even bring out the 12 footer and pop some new rivets into her while I'm at it this weekend. I just brushed all the snow off her the other day and she's all dried out and ready to go. I need at least one water-ready vessel:D

Wow I know it has probably been said but if that transom is presser treated i would get it out of there as soon as possible the amount of pitting on mine was insane. Good luck

86 I believe it is treated...not sure how to tell for sure besides the greenish tint to it. It will be removed as soon as I get my gluvit down and pull my OB. I'm going to be ordering a lifting ring for the Merc today:)

Thanks QM...although I'd recommend checking out NB and Ezmobee's projects if you'd like a more smoothly paved road;)...I have a few potholes on my road(common this time of year:D)

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Lots of progress to report:D

My fishing buddy stopped in to help out a bit yesterday. We also had the boys hang out at the grandparents for the night so Roslynn was able to help out too.

-I got the three problem rivets replaced...drenched in 5200:) (this was accomplished after making the job MUCH more difficult than it had to be)

-All yellow vinyl is now out of the boat. Too much yellow for me.

-Got the last pedestal base cut out of the old plywood. Those bolts were rusty and stubborn.

-Picked up 3 sheets of 3/4" exterior grade plywood...also got some polystyrene foam board for flotation.

-Traced out templates for new deck

-Used the shop vac to get the boat cleaned up and ready for gluvit:D

My deck needs to be about 63.5" wide and the ply is 4x8 I have plenty of good material including vinyl so I can make my box in the stern and the bow structure.

Today we are going to be cutting the plywood, tracing templates for the dash and maybe playing with the gluvit if it's warm enough.:)

No pictures yet...back to work:D

Sounds great. I'm just about to head out to work on mine. Just picked up my PVC trim board to replace the bow "keystone" :p I hope you get to gluviting today.

Some rivets with 5200 to seal up transducer mount holes.

These are the three new rivets that I popped into the keel. Not the smoothest of operations...it should hold up nicely though.

Pink foam board for flotation...it says it is flammable!?! Is this what you guys used?

A shot of the extra pieces of ply after trimming it down to size, some nice-looking wood.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Outlining the deck using the old as a template and I have a decision to make...should I:

A. use the old deck templates, even though the aft piece doesn't extend under the splashwell. There was a removable carpeted piece which I still have that fits under there with a slot cut out for the knee brace.

OR

B. measure and make my own templates for a new deck that will run from transom to bow and require lots of extra work. The problem with this is that my stringers end where the splashwell begins, unlike every other Starcraft I've seen:confused:

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

I haven't bought my foam yet, so can't help there..I used the blue in the imperial and now I'm wondering as well.

As to the templates, I'd use the old ones and measure the aft one...easier imo.
Went to my step-mom's today and picked up dad's old pressure washer....women, children, unruly pets and neighbors beware!!!:eek::D let the fun begin {tomorrow..nasty misty kinda day here today}
