Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

I'm going to get these SS rod holders off ebay today:)

Probably going to mount them on the gunwales on either side of the splashwell so they can be used with downriggers or just some diving rapala's or dipsy divers.

I'm pretty happy with the price since these can be found for as much as $60 each. Getting two for $16 including shipping.:D

I couldn't agree more ja:D

The seller didn't get back to me regarding combined shipping, and his other two were 90 degrees while these are 80, allowing the pole to lean back towards the fish.

I could use one 90 degree holder for my net however:)

I'm leaning towards getting a pair of rail-mounted plastic holders for the bow as well, since the bow-mount SS are ridiculously cost prohibitive:(

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Somebody sniped the stainless steel pole holders on ebay while I was playing with my two sons...back on the hunt:rolleyes:

I'm debating whether or not my shortshaft(15") 5.5hp Johnson will do ok as a kicker on this rig.

I will be trading my 30lb Minn Kota to my buddy for his 55lb plus $60 bucks so I will have a decent electric troller. My concern is if I'm in waves the little 5.5 might get dunked and cause issues.

Any advice here?

I also wanted to post this photo from the 1979 brochure:)

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

I planned on degreasing and cleaning the hull...went out and bought a sweet product to help me...and when I went to work Roslynn mentioned that the label clearly stated "not to be used on aluminum":D

So it's a good thing somebody is paying attention to details around here(clearly not me).

I will be sanding and scuffing the rivets prior to applying the gluvit...weather permitting.

I need it to be in the high 50s for 2-3 days to even consider it. So I will be waiting for a little warm spell(we are due for more snow now).

If it stays 25+ outside I can keep it over 50 inside my garage. I will mix the gluvit at room temp of course so that won't be a problem.

I got this rivet gun and played with it a bit. I will be using this to tie down the stringers a bit and to attach the bow section. I plan on buying some aluminum pieces to rivet in to reinforce the bow structure.

I coudn't pass on these Plano boxes:) One will go in a hatch under the bow and hold stuff to catch fish with...the other will hold the manual, emergency firestarting gear, etc and stay under the bow seats.

I will be putting in some work on the bow light. The yellow plastic can be scuffed and brightened I believe. Consider this the "before" picture.:D

ALL RIGHT MORE SNOW, YESSSSS! An outdoor boat builders dream come true, eh! (man I wish I had a big ol pole barn about now)

Hey Huron, what did you decide to do with the holes on your deck? JBW, epoxy, alumiweld, Dura Fix? I'll have a million to do on mine!

Cheers Man!

When you get to this the red lens must be on the port and green on starboard. Unless you posted the pic backwards by mistake? :)

Mine were backwards when I got my boat.

Yeah we got plenty of snow today. The kids love sledding so not a big problem:D

As far as the holes...I'm leaning towards using JB weld since they are all pretty small and it is cheap and easy to use. I am debating whether or not to even fill the snap-screw holes at all.

I may put the snaps all back on with new SS screws since I want to get custom canvas made at some point.

Albert...I hadn't even noticed that. Good thing I didn't get boarded by the CG, might've been a fix-it ticket issued for that:)

They must have mixed those up at the factory. At least they made a nice aluminum boat hull, the rivets look fine.

I can handle a small problem like transposing the bow light lenses:D:D

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

I've been working on getting my seats ready to apply some vinyl paint. I ordered a product that is actually a vinyl dye and I'm curious to see how well it works.

I'm looking to use this on only a small section of each seat, to change it from blue to yellow. The white and grey on the seats will stay.

We've got one seat taped and ready to paint, will be testing on some of the vinyl on the bottom first to see how it turns out. I will post some pics if it turns out well.

If it doesn't work I will post pics of the new seats I'll be buying LOL :D

BTW I did dismantle the bow light and got the lenses switched over to the correct sides as well:)

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

I got some goodies delivered while I was at work today:D
The yellow might go on the port and starboard stern...the white probably on the trailer angle pieces.

Great deal on these and the logo on the yellow ones match the style on the '79 Starcrafts. Pretty happy to find these in the right color!

This is the vinyl dye that we will be experimenting with.

This is the tape job...the blue will be painted. The directions say to do one light coat, then wait 10min...then another and wait 10min...then one final heavy coat on top. We will see:)

HA I had those style rod holders on my Arima and I didn't like them. They might do good when drifting or trolling but when we anchored up for cat fishing I couldn't keep the lines tight, so I just didn't like them. Might have just been me though, I'm no pro but I don't know what else I could have done. I think I'm going to try an adjustable holder like the down east rod holders.

Jeff- I will be using these for trolling primarily so that will keep my lines tight. I know what ya mean though, keeping a tight line is as important as fishing the right spot:)

Were you bottom fishing with stinkbaits?

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

I spent the day drilling out some old factory rivets, and then spent some time replacing some of them with new ones:D

DSCF5515.jpg

Riveting is one of my favorite new hobbies. To a man holding a rivet gun the world is a piece of aluminum in need of reinforcement.

The new ones are real shiny. I may replace the majority of the stringer rivets. Might as well since I've got a box of them.

This shelf needed to be tied into the hull...this is addicting:cool:

jasoutside...the seat is still sitting on the floor next to me taped up...we haven't sprayed it yet. This is a leap of faith since it may turn green. You know, blue and yellow:p

Oh Yeah..Isn't that empowering?? I redid all my stringer rivets and side panel/ guwale trim..It made a HUGE difference to its rigidity..most of mine were loose or missing..Looking Good!
