Yes you are right Arch is a perfectionist his painting skills are off the chart but I have always been told that what you know when you start compared to what you know when you done is the measuring stick of a craftsman and you sir are are a great example also something that is becoming lost in this country work ethic it defines us all!

Thanks FF. i have been saying all along, the folks on here had me convinced I could do glass work long before I even got the materials to get started. Been a learning curve, but I feel like I'm getting the hang of it. No pro by far, but I can lay some down.

Another hot one!

Granddaughter got in this morning close to 9 am. Spent a little time with them then went out and cut more CSM/1708.

Got everything laid out ready to glass. Was cool when I started...so tried 500ml, firgured I could get it spread out quick enough....barely....

Ended up going with 350ml and the sun broke out and started heating things up quick...got the bilge, fuel locker (3 sides - not sure how I missed the one) and two sections of the ski locker before I started feeling light headed from the heat. Putting things on hold till later this afternoon, once it starts cooling off.

So it cooled down a little, 96...did the rest of the inside edge on the stringers....and the one outside edge I didn't get to yesterday.

Think I am done for today though...will get the bulkheads and gussets tomorrow...then time to mark a few lines and cut!

Decided to cut the rest of the CSM for the bulkheads, gussets amd all the corners. There are alot of corners! Figured if I had everything ready for morning I can get more glassin done before the heatwave hits.

Talk like that ^^^will get ya labeled pro glasser sooner. Thinking ahead a few extra steps, esp to beat the mid day heat, sounds fabulous! It was crazy humid today & by 10a it was miserable out in the driveway.

Now gussets and corners...May wait on the corners till after cutting to height, so I am not wasting too much resin/glass....already on my third 5 gal bucket :(

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

I decided to start cutting things to height...in the heat (112 in the shade side of boat)...fully exposed to the sun...think I should have sat down with a drink in the cool house and thought about it a little more.

I have been pondering for some time how I was going to do this....

I went with the rear right corner...made my mark on stringer...cut a full 1/4" above the line...did this in both corners...took a straight edge side to side and my cuts on port were high, but low on starboard..%#@$@$#%$

went and ate...cooled down...came up with what I think is the correct way to figure out the height I need. Straight edge(aluminum in pic 1) side to side...right over the top of each gusset and bulkhead (1 at a time). made astick with a stop on it (clamped wood in pic 2) brought this down and touched my 1/4" block to get height....checked each side..went with the higher one of they were not the same...most were...used the stick to mark the lines...now will take a straight edge and mark the lines...then get to cutting early in the am. I have one blade for the jigsaw...dull.. two blades for the reciprocating saw...one dull..and my circular saw....then angle grinder with a sanding pad to fine tune where needed.if things go better tomorrow than they did today...I might have some deck getting fit tomorrow!

You can see my marks...and the edge I used gunnel to gunnel
DSC01070.jpg

This shows my boo-boo...shouldn't be too hard to fix..and the board/clamp used to get a good reference point for the bottom of the deck...

Hope everyone is enjoying their Holiday....

I went out and started cutting the stringers/bulkheads & gussets to height...

With a better plan things went nicely. I tried to keep things just a little tall so I can go back with a belt sander later this week.

Got a little hot so calling it quits till later this evening...

Too hot! This is the shade side of the boat...lots of bright sunshine heating things up...

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

Went out about 3:30 to finish up the front section of stringers. Got them cut to height...was a tight fit. I ended up using the reciprocating saw far all the sawing. The blade worked great, cut very fast till I hit the corners, but still went through them OK.

After finishing decided to grab a piece of plywood scrap...laid it out on the strings and for the most part things are going as planned. A few high spots, but I wanted those as opposed to low spots like I had starting out...DOH!

After getting the plywood in and 'pretending' I had a deck...like FriscoBoater says..it is SO nice to have a flat surface in the boat finally! I was sitting drinking some water...pondering my next move...Kept looking at the seating area up in the bow. I just know there is wood and water up there...so.......began to start cutting..

DSC01074.jpg

I could not believe what I was seeing...ants...and eggs...which means they are thriving! Actually found three separate colonies
DSC01075.jpg

Not sure if you all recall seeing it, but there was a plate covering a hole up front...this is what was under it...that is a repair of some sort...and they used spray foam to fill it in ....hmmmm
DSC01076.jpg

And this is what the repair was...they cut out an eye...and left it in there!
DSC01077.jpg

Looks to me like there is evidence of water intrusion here...
DSC01078.jpg

I thought I was done seeing foam? Some of this was wet..so glad I removed it...the recip saw made mince meat out of it too!

You think the po moved the location of the bow eye ? Thats not the eye that you use is it .

No it isn't the eye used now. The trailer has a rest/stop on it that is in the same location as the original eye. This also explains why the gelcoat has rubbed off in this area.

Think I should remove that metal? Bet it will eventually rust and break the fiberglass. That is if there is metal in there, could be glass...need to check that out today.

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

A little grinding, and I will have a clean slate....

DSC01081.jpg

Anyone have an issue with me removing that foam block stuff and not replacing it? Is that sound dampening? To keep the hull from flexing too much?
