Hey...what's with all the distraction? 2+ pages of table saw stuff...while I can appreciate such a nice TB (BTW, that's a really cool one, you did an outstanding job refurbing it...those table are awesome too, clearly skilled, you should use that to re-do a boat....wait...). I understand you have other things to do...but lets get back with the boat already!

"we interrupt this boat build to bring you a life!

Of course I'm joking (see below, second part of signature)

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

Thanks Kent, Brett and Allen...

Boat work coming soon...getting close to the anniversary....

But for now I got some stain and the Admiral's tables....used a rag yesterday for the first coat, tried a brush on second coat after some light steel wool...think I need to scrub them one more time to get rid of the runs and darker areas...

Went out to the garage to get my camera, was surprised to see it was a warm 54 degrees inside....no heat since Sunday...temps outside been below 30 last couple of days...very happy I invested in the new walls...

I guess because it was "The Admirals" table, you were allowed to stain in the house? heh

I like the rag method myself, it takes more coats, but i seem to get more blotches with a brush, foam or not..even brushing into the wet edge....seems like you get more control rubbing it in.

Looks good :)

Looks great ! For a sealer you might consider using some tung oil . Really easy to apply . But there may be better products . IDK .

I have used tongue oil before on a rifle stock I made...all hand rubbed dark american walnut, turned out great! But that took many hours ...would take months doing a table, no less two of em :(

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

So I am looking to you all for some advice...as you may recall when I out the gel down on the deck I used wax in the mix and rolled it out with a paint roller...it neve really cured like it should have...since then it has collected dirt and dust form the travels and all the sanding i have done...the other day I took a rag withacetone and wiped an area down to see if I could clean it up...the gel got very soft while wet with the acetone, while alot of dirt came off, alot stayed...so after it dried. I took a sander to it...looks better but still dirt in the low parts...

So the qeustion...do I start sanding down past the dirt and muck, then a new layer of csm followed by a proper gel coat spray then pva on the gel to cure? Or can i just put a layer of csm down over the dirt then gel?

This for sure

then a new layer of csm
What's your reasoning for more CSM?

followed by a proper gel coat spray then pva on the gel to cure?
This sounds good too

Or can i just put a layer of csm down over the dirt then gel?
Yeah, probably not a good idea.

But what do I know, apparently, I'm a tinfoil hat wearing kinda guy.... :tinfoil3:

I have nothing constructive to add to the "process" of gel coating, except...you've come this far and done a ton of work on her...best to take the add'l time to make her look as good as you're capable of...which looking thru your re-build is nothing less than "better than new"...whatever process that involves...you're in the home stretch. We're cheering for you!

Yep ' no expert but would think sanding till dirt it gone . I used the gell with wax so I had to sand between coats . Still need to seal it though . Maybe you were thinking a different type tung oil . This is what I used on my dining room table and chairs . Super easy and dries fast..

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

From what I have read and what little experience I have, it sounds like the gel did not cure properly on the surface..
From what I understand the gel coat will cure under the top coat of gel without wax.. That's what sounds like is happening to your gel coat..
I would use the acetone to remove as much as possible and the sand it down untill you reach the harder gel coat..
Then acetone again and do the new spray..

Don't think you need to try new csm over the gel coat.. It may not bond to it..
Just my thoughts on this..

The table looks great with the stain.. Amazing what the old shelves turned into..

Good luck on the gel coat..

Thanks for the advice all...once again just confirms what I already figured was to be the plan...think i will use buckets of soapy water while sanding...hope it helps with the stickyness on the sanding pads....

the reason i was thinking maybe a. New layer of csm was that it would hold better than just gel over a dirty surface.....but i gues there is no substitute for good prep...

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

The stickyness is the uncured gel.. Try to remove as much as you can with a soaked acetone rag in small areas at a time.
It will help with the sticky sanding..
I had to do it on my first boat I did with gel.. Didn't known about the wax or pva when I sprayed it.. I just used the acetone and rag then sanded..

Decker..you got it right....very small areas..

The center of this pic was plain acetone...to the right I had done acetone followed by a sanding...the dirt creeped in still looks like to me

Close up of that area I did last week....acetone then sanding...

going to take a lot of rags...the dirt smears if you don't freshen the rag...

Troop, One things for sure, Properly cured gelcoat should not be softened to the point of eating it away by acetone. If it does then you got a major problem and IMHO it should be removed and replaced. I'm not exactly sure why it occured but a properly mixed ratio of gelcoat, mekp, and wax should cure to a rock hard consistency and not be negatively affected by acetone.
