QC: Yes I've done it many times on 6.2's, and I did have the lines cracked open at the injectors last night. If the starter hadn't quit on me I probably would've had it running in another couple of minutes.

um yeah, drawing 300 more amps through a switch than its rated is bad ummm kayyy :p

but I still think you just quick drained the batteries. the clicking noise from the solenoid is classic of either a drained battery or a bad solenoid...which cant be ruled out either yet. the battery to + terminal and negative to case on starter test will figure that out toot sweet though.

lets hope for the best. damn chinese >.> <.<

Well last night I checked my starter every possible way, and unfortunately it's toast. This is my fault for buying a cheap POS starter from some fly-by-night outfit over the Internet.

On top of that I have to leave on Saturday for a 1-2 week business trip so the boat is just going to have to sit until I get back.

Ugh!

That stinks!

I guess you can look at the bright side though, at least your starter had the common courtesy to quit on you in the boat yard rather than off shore!!!;)

lol, I hate to laugh but its just the irony that you literally have to now...lift the engine up the 9" you were dredding when the starter went out...like 3 days after you installed the engine.

Its like one of those douchebag jesus pics. I can just see him standing over you while you change the starter going "bet you wish you just paid the little extra right now dont you?"

I was so getting stoked to hear that diesel clatter! It's all ok, Luhrs, like's been said; at least it happended now instead of waiting until you were 10 miles out. You've done some great work so far.

Thanks guys! Today one of my coworkers said: "well maybe you should quit pouting about it like a baby and get your ***** out there and replace the starter!" He's right. I'm picking up the new starter on my way home tonight but I won't be able to install it until I come back from my trip next week.

Time is what I'm short of now. You can always borrow more money to finish a project but you still need to set aside time to do it.

Sorry to hear about the starter.....but seems like its an uphill fight when working on a boat! Looking forward to a successful starter install and hearing her purr!

Hmmm, bad luck with the starter, hope the new one lasts. Good luck with the installation, you said earlier it's a pita job... so take it easy and she'll soon be humming! :)

Hi guys:

If you're wondering why I've made zero progress lately I'm currently on a business trip to Baoding, China. I'm hoping to get out of here and back to NJ this weekend. We'll see. Believe me I'm anxious to install my new starter and get the boat in the water.

is it a okay to use starter fluid of any kind on an IDI diesel? ive always heard no because of the compression ratio.

Starter fluid on anything but an old school diesel is bad news. It balloons glow plugs, and can do even worse.

I can remember my related shop teacher had a piston from a Caterpillar that was close to the size of a 1 gallon paint can. It had a crack from the oil ring land all the way down the skirt. Supposedly starter fluid was what caused it.

Wow Bert,

Posting from China, that's dedication man!

I think you got a great boat and engine over there!

I'm still in China. I'm flying home next Weds the 25th.

With my new starter I went with the most expensive one I could find, a Duralast Gold for $320. It also might be made in China but I'm hoping for that price it's made better than the $95 one I bought over the Internet.

I wish you all a good weekend.

Dakota: Mine's in South Amboy, but she's still up on blocks at the moment. I'm going to try to hoist my engine up about 18" tomorrow, replace the starter and set it right back down on the mounts and reconnect everything. With a little luck I'll be testing it with a garden hose in the afternoon. If all is OK I'm going to have the yard guys throw her in the water sometime next week.

A meetup would be great but I'm going to need some practice driving it first. I've never piloted a boat this big before.

Hey luhrs,

no dont use starter fluid use wd-40, fill the injection pump with fuel and leave the injector lines on. We used to do this all the time when we installed new pumps. The wd works real well but has to be wd not any thing else
