I had some of those 'dry' areas in my imperial...agreed, grind them out...1708 is the cat's backend in my book, luved working with it, though I used epoxy, though probably couldn't tell the difference if my life depended on it

Good job, Think we've only had 2 days over 70 this year :( ..can't get too warm for working here...at my size, I sweat just thinking about work and wake up tuckered out lol....keep at it, keep smiling, keepsake ;)

Something to keep in mind while grinding ( I figured this out today )...

If you find yourself tiring out after 30-40 minutes of it, you may want to check your respirator...they can get clogged up with airborne debris pretty quick and you will wear out really fast because you can't breathe as easily.

Of course, you are doing this in the open air and I'm in a "tent" so I don't have any chance of a breeze to carry the stuff away. I have to get new cartridges after one day of grinding because I didn't put the prefilters over them ( idiot! ), so all I could do was shape the wood for my center stringer and get that ready for sealing...argh....my last day off for the week.

Yup, those suits get hot fast...which is why I tented off my boat. Keeps the heat off, but the dust in ( see above )...trade offs, y'know?

The demolition looks like it went well with the help you have. Be careful grinding though, it's easy to zip the hull thin on the contoured areas. I ended up running a 10" strip of 1708 down the length of the hull where my stringers are to reinforce where I had gotten it thinned to the gel coat

One thing about Polyester resin...use the respirator with good chemical cartridges, and make sure you are sanded down to good glass everywhere you plan to put new glass down, and make sure the surfaces are void of any bumps or dips that are too tight...the smoother the better the glass will lay down and lay up for you.

It aint posed to get above 65 today... but chance of rain and thunderstorms.. so hopefully that don't pan out and it stays dry. I could get LOTS done today if the weather stays cool!!!!!

Thanks for the tips, red!!! :) I'll check the filters, and will get some new packs tomorrow.

I'm trying to be really careful bout grinding too much, which is probably why its taking me so dagblastid long to do each section.

Gonna coffee up and if the weather holds for the next hour, I should be back out grinding away! :D

You are right the groves are where the stringers should be. Thats how my stringers were, just a groove of fiberglass and mush between.

When I tore the stuff out.. the only stringer was the center one. :confused:No fiberglass shell or nuttin on the other grooves. I can't find any information on this boat anywhere..so I was just figurin, based on what I saw during demo, that it only originally had the one stringer

I think you are right; only one stringer. It looks like the deck was supported on either side of the stringer by the foam.

So I wonder if adding a stringer on each side of the center would help with hull strength as well? And support the deck? I REALLY don't want to go with that awful foam again. Was hoping to go with a different type, either noodles or something like the sheet foam *shrug*

No progress today...5 minutes of grinding and then the rain started grrrrr

Sorry to hear about the rain :(

Whats the beam of the boat (width) You might do good by adding 2 more stringers, I'm thinking 3/4" ply would work good. With my deck I added bulkheads too for support under the deck.

Although I replaced the flotation foam in mine, if I had to do it again I would leave it out. Even though the math works I find it hard to believe it would stop the boat from sinking.

SnowHunter,
I know how it is to work on a tight budget too. I found a source for glass and resin that has beat everyone else so far. The resin is good and only $100 for 5 gallons. I'm not sure where you are located in GA, but I know they have a store near Chattanooga, TN. The only downside is they don't sell the 1708 unless it's in the full roll. You can get almost any other glass but not the 1708. I used 18oz Rouvin and 1.5oz CSM.
If you are interested, I can get the information to you and you can check it out.
Keep the picks coming and good luck.

its 5'11" beam. I would definetly go plywood with the extra stringers. The center will hafta be something like 1x, or I'd hafta scab some together...and from what I've read on other posts..scabbing is a no no

Whats this no pics or updates for 6 days:eek: Haven't given up already LOL ???????

For the new main stringer you could go with 2 pieces of 1/2" ply glued together and use scarf joints to get the length you need this would be more dimensionally stable than using 1x .

i used plywood sistered together, stagger the joints to acheive the desired thickness, and if you wanted to on the other 2 u could use dimensional lumber as they wherent in the original build plan, i would bite the bullet and do them all from acx or bcx exterior ply, it will cost a little more but will be way more stable and strong

Weather, kids non cooperation, and hubby had to work all weekend have kept me from doin ANYTHING!!! :( I had a canopy all rigged, and the wind/rain busted it all up, so the boat is, at the moment, a mini pond  Its tornado season in The South, JOY!!!

Not sure when I'll be able to get back to it. If the weather cooperates, this weekend, but, doubtful. Lawd what I wouldn't give for a garage, or even a carport!!!

So, ac would be stronger? Then I'll go with that and stagger em like yall said. Aint gonna skrimp on strength, not with my youngins in mind! I'm usin AC for the deck and whatnot anyways, might as well just get an extra few sheets!!!

This whole bad weather=no boat work has put me in a funk. As it stands, until I get a job, once the grinding is done, this project comes to a screeeeeeeching halt!!!

If it weren't for Hubs and our youngins, I'd be a mess!!! Thankfully, we did get some relax time at the local creek last weekend before the weather hit.

Hey SnowHunter,
I sent you a PM on the resin info.
I know what you are saying about living through others rebuilds. Just different reasons.
Good luck with the boat.

Believe you me, just about everyone on here is doing their rebuilds as the money comes in. If we weren't....we'd have bought better boats!

Serve cheese with your wine? lol

brie please :D

So I've run into quite a SNAG :eek:

Registration....YUK!

And, the HID plate is supposed to be on the STARBOARD side correct? And thats the right side of the boat, standing at the back, facing the bow? Mine is on the left....and I can't get it to match anything....

It also seems Bayliner didn't make a 1977 model Runaway?

This is the HID I got off the back... BLBW42U1177-v

Now, I found an inboard twin of my boat, and it had a HID of BAB529CAU177
iobaylinerinterior.jpg

iobayliner.jpg

Does something seem funky with my HID? According to how a HID is supposed to be, mines got some funky sequence to it....*shrug*

I've exhausted searching the internet. Chancing the 11's for LL 1L L1 hasn't turned up squat.

The GADNR Boat Registration has it (going off of the Reg # on the boat itself) as a 1980 Fisher *head scratch* The HID showed NOTHING! Not even when I called back and gave them the correct one! (first time I messed up letters)

I did post this in the Boat Topics board too, but, figured it had to do with some form of progress on the boat resto itself....

Needless to say this boat is on hold until I get registration figured out. No grinding, nuttin.

I am pickin up another boat on Friday for pocket change though :D Gonna get checked n registered BEFORE I do anything with it though!!!

Yall got any tips for me bout my Dancin Nanner boat? I'm stuck!

SnowHunter,
Sorry to hear about your problems with the HID number. That really suks.
Have you tried to contact Bayliner. One problem we have with some of these older boats is getting information.
Good luck in your quest.
Bob
