I have to echo the statement above. Please exercise a bit more caution while grinding..... you, the hubby, the young man all should be getting hosed down with COLD water ...... you want to prevent that garbage from entering your skin.

You should keep your eyes open for rashes on everyone. Yes there are fairly cheap tyvek coveralls that will protect you.

Kids weren't near while grinding...thats a definate precaution I was adamant about!

Yup, I'd planned on gettin some type of coverall suits to grind in, and I will go and buy a respirator, in fact, It'll be done tomorrow before I do anymore!!! I've got some old clothes I just pulled out for future grinding as well!!!

and 10-4 on the rashes. I will keep my eyes peeled ;) I'm just glad I don't itch, thankfully!

SnowHunter,
As the previous posters stated, Take care. I aw the pic of you grinding and went "OMG". The snowmen suits work good and don't cost that much. I got mine for only a few bucks each. Glad to hear you won't do that anymore.
Goggles would be a good Idea too.
Never have to much protection.
Have fun and be safe.

Snow, I don't much about boats but I know that this is a great thread. :)

You've got a real nice family there and it's nice to see you all sharing this kind of project. ;)

Those suits do get pretty hot. I did most of my grinding when it was in the 30's. Glad to know you are protected now.
Keep the pic's coming.

Re: 77 Bayliner Runaway-Oh Lawd what'd I get myself into!!!

So, a question...regarding all this grinding...

My deck was actually about 2-3" sort of the hull on each long side. *scratching head* From the edge of the deck to the hull is all resin/fiberglass stuff (bout 3/4" thick). I don't have pics, and its too dark to take one with my phone.

Do I go ahead and grind to the hull or leave the resin and use that as a spot for the deck to rest on?

I'm thinkin grind it down...or that could lead to stringer gap problems and mebe deck weakness?

ALSO.....(yes, I will shaddup after this one :D )

We're thinking of cutting out the front seating area in the bow. That would also be cutting out the source of the only leak in the boat. Does that extra material provide much structure to the boat itself? Or would we be able to provide just as much rigidity with the new seating/storage and glasswork that would entail?

Ok, got pics...

Here's the excess stuff on the side between the deck and hull....

This is on the right side (starboard?)

This is on the left (port?)

And here's the front seating area we were thinking of cutting out...it'd make life easier putting the top back on, and it would also give us a spot to build better storage/seating.

dont grind the stink out of that leave a recess to reset your deck in, may even help make a pattern for ya as well.
as far as cuttin up the topcap, i dont think i would, maybe im chicken, think about what you will gain vs what youll have in time and $$ to mod it, unless your just dead set on it. you may get other opinions, thats my .02

Re: 77 Bayliner Runaway-Oh Lawd what'd I get myself into!!!

Ok, well, got a chance to do some more grinding today. Poor boats been ignored having to deal with gettin some other projects situated.

I took a closer look at the sides, that I posted previously about, and saw they were uneven. At this point, I just grinded a good bit down, out to the sides. (At least on one side of the boat. Got too hot to do the other.) Feathering it. (no pic of the feathering, oops!)
53.jpg

54.jpg

Problem was, the farther down I grinded, the closer I could see some dark splotches, and what looked like *dry* chopped up fiberglass.
55.jpg

Can yall see what I'm talkin bout? The stuff up under the thick layer of resin? *scratches head*

The woven roving is the only barrier between me and the gelcoat stuff on the outside. I'm trying to be REALLY careful about not grinding into it. I did hit a couple spots, but not deep. Those will get some reinforcement.

So if any of this makes sense, I'd love some advice...am I doing too much grinding? Doing enough? What is the dry fiberglass stuff I've run into? *shrug* I'd really preciate some advice before I do anymore grinding...

Thanks! :)

Re: 77 Bayliner Runaway-Oh Lawd what'd I get myself into!!!

Hey SnowHunter,
Just took a break from my grinding figured I would peek in ;)

That dry glass your looking at is probably CSM or from a chopper gun that didn't get as much resin. I could be wrong so wait for others to chime in, but if it was my boat, I would clean up the glass and lay in another layer of 1708 biax to strengthen her up from the grinding.

Well its back to work for me, I just ordered another 3 gal of epoxy for the one project. In the interim I am gonna try to get the Sea Gem back on the water :D Just don't tell the wife ;)

Thats what I was thinkin...not enough resin.

Actually, I had thought of doing another layer on the whole hull. It has a LOT of flex on the sides, and more then I'm comfortable with on the bottom and I don't want to end up cracking the boat beyond repair while working IN it.

What exactly is biax? I've seen in mentioned before too

I agree, a full layer on the entire hull. Are you using poly or epoxy for your repairs?

1708 Biax is a heavy cloth where the strands are 45 degrees from the main weave with a CSM (cut strand mat) backing. Here is a link to it at US Composites . This fabric is super strong and leaves a smooth surface If you look at my transom turned rebuild thread, its what I used for the deck, transom etc...

I'll be using poly, the budget just aint cut out for epoxy

I checked out US Composites a few weeks ago to price check supplies  not too bad, really. Just gonna hafta find a way to squeeze somethin outta the budget to get started. Grrrr I need a job!!!

Hopefully I can get some more grinding done tomorrow. Hopefully it cools off some. this 75+ deg weather sure makes it tough to get a whole lot done before Snowy is slap wore out :D
