I hear ya, that would tick me off big time. I dislike when someone says they'll do something and charge me money for it and then they drag their feet on the job. I probably would have drug my boat home by now after being worried sick about some tweaker stealing it.

My face is burnt from the sun and AC went out in the house. However, My my boat is home and floor is cut with only one miscalculation between the bow piece and mid section. You can see the gap in the pics. I cut a piece to fit and will knuckle them in snug with under piece supports. I think I will build a bench seat over that section now. Picked up blue and tan outdoor carpet also. I might go with the blue on the deck and tan on all seat boxes and stuff. Got some sealer for the wood and glue for the carpet also. Now for waiting till next next weekend to hopefully getting more done!!

Transom cap was about to get started but I told them Id call and schedule another drop off when I get the floor in. No sweat there. Got more painting to do and the motor will be the last thing anyhow.

Nice progress, I wouldn't sweat that gap, support it good underneath and it'll be fine. Or create in floor storage.

I thought about leaving it to be more easily accessible for repairs/inspecting. But Im gonna knuckle that stuff up tight and good. I thought today I shoulda got the foam while I was there. Guess I have one more run to the "get me in trouble store".

I got my rigid foam from a "restore" they recycle building materials and donate the money earned back. I got my foam for less than half retail, if you have a place like that around, it's worth looking.

I would maybe consider using spar varnish over the Thompsons water sealer. Not sure if that stuff will hold up as well. Maybe some of the others will chime in and say yay or nay.

I got some spar left over still but how well does the glue hold to that stuff? I was think some thompsons sealer and the glue itself would make a pretty good barrier at least on the top side.

The glue will stick to the spar just fine. Not sure it'll stick as well to the Thompsons, and it won't be nearly as waterproof as it will be w/ the spar.

I think once the spar dries glue sticks to it pretty good. If you're gonna use the boat year round for hunting and fishing I would make sure you seal up the wood for the deck really well due to getting water in the boat more frequently than the average boater. Like I said maybe someone will say the Thompsons will be okay. I was under the impression it doesn't hold up well long term in boat restos.

I agree the Thompson's isn't the best choice to seal decking and will leave a waxy layer that will make it tough for the glue to stick to.

So tonight I used the remainder of spar I had and had bought a new gallon to use instead of the thompsons water sealer stuff. I have 1 to 2 coats on each piece and plan to get more on the deck sections tomorrow. Its not really pic worthy but I plan to have all the sections sealed this weekend to include the pieces I will use to join each section together. (I have not cut those yet.) But its in the plans. There is a family of little girls and a wife here though, so it might pointless to plan. Some of yall might know what I mean.

The wood looks good and sealed doesn't it? That spar is better than people give it credit for, after 3 coats the wood shines real nice.

It does turn out really nice looking with several light coats applied at a time! It says to use a brush but ive been using a little foam roller and it worked fine. I think I have a good layer on top and bottom now (several each side). Time to let it dry real good.

Man, you can really see the shine in that far piece there!! So glossy! On my transom I started with a rag and ended up using a roller for the next few coats too. So much easier.

I was kinda worried about it disappearing too, But they keep their boats and Rv's in their lot too so it made me feel a little safe.

It does look good up close too, I cant see water getting into this wood anytime soon.

Ok, so this afternoon I unconventionally replaced a bow section of wood. Instead of one solid piece, Its two reinforced with some aluminum angle. It isnt sealed so it may not last 10 years. Its more of a prototype replacement but it sure is strong. The only thing left to do is tight'n down some of the bolts more than finger tight.

The lighting doesnt help, But this is the bow piece that was dry rotted and pulled out easily by hand.

This is just a clearer pic.

Cut a 32" piece of angle and riveted to the existing angle that bolts to those two pieces of wood under the bow. 20150621_122157_resized.jpg

Test fitting half a piece.

New angle support riveted in place.

20150621_123955_resized.jpg

Also have it rivetd up tight through the top. Ill probably add a couple more up here.
20150621_124002_resized.jpg

I will add a couple more large flange rivet here also. Again the lighting is bad. I also have to redrill some holes to the original angle to tie it all in. But you get the Idea. 20150621_134151_resized.jpg

It aint the purdiest but it is solid! Next go around with sealed wood it will be a cleaner cut job with less gap. I might even have to align all those top rivets evenly spaced. This pic makes me have to fix that laziness on my part.
