Re: 76 16' Starcraft Kingfisher project.............I hope!

does the plywood (3/4) go into that groove, or does it stop on the edge of the stringer before the groove. If it stop, which it appear to, do I have to seal that gap between the floor and the sidewall at all.

Nah, the plywood doesn't need to go into that "groove". That there is actually a "chine" which has more to do with the structure of the boat rather than the deck. You can have the deck stop short of the chine and basically extend just proud of the ribs.

You'll definitely not want to "seal" the deck and the side of the boat hull. You'll want water to travel over the side of the deck, then down into the bilge, and then out the side via bilge pump.

Cheers:)

Re: 76 16' Starcraft Kingfisher project.............I hope!

More progress made in the past few months. I was able to get the floor cut and sealed with 635 epoxy resin (from US Composites) along with 1708 Biaxial Fabric (also from US Composites). Floation was put in place, I just used the insulation board I had from my floor template. I ran some 1" electrical conduit under the floor from the bow to the side console, and then also from the side console to the stern, so I can run wires neatly and not having them under the gunwales. Not sure if that is common practice, but seemed like a good idea. Two lengths of 1" and 4 sweeping elbows and it was done. I painted the side console I picked up on CL for $30. Looks great to me. I picked up a few seats from Cabela's during their last sale. Perfect color match to the boat. I am very happy with the seats. I'm a little back and forth on how I want to set my seating up. I know there will be a casting platform at the bow with a seat on that. Obviously I have my seat at the console and I want to put two more seats toward the stern. I was hoping to have two pedestal type that turn 360 because I plan to have downriggers near them, but it seems a little to tight for that. I then changed my mind and built a bench seat and put the two on top of the bench and will be able to use the space underneath for storage. It also gives a nice area behind the bench at the transom area for battery, gas, etc. I think I am going to go with this, but please feel free give me your thoughts. Also not sure what to do with the inside walls, paint or carpet. I was planning on carpet on top of the casting platform, and Dorsett Marine Vinyl floor for the rest of the floor. Not sure about the sides though. Again anyone have some thoughts.

Getting ready to secure the floor down, build the casting platform and then start hooking up the steering, motor, etc. This project is taking a lot more time then I had planned, but its getting there. Thanks again for all help!

It looks like the boat had a bench bow and the stern from the factory, are you sure they are not needed to give the hull some rigidity?

I thought about that too. All the more reason why I think I will go with the bench seat in the rear and also the casting platform in the bow will utilize the former bench brackets so I think it will return the original strength that came from the seats. thanks for the thought.

Re: 76 16' Starcraft Kingfisher project.............I hope!

Made a mistake today and not sure what to do. I had trimmed the edges of the plywood floor to make a nice fit and had planned on going back and apply the epoxy resin to the edges before securing the floor. I forgot and secured the floor to the stringers without treating the edges. Should I take the floor off and treat or can I leave and drip it down the sides. Any other solution? I don't mind taking it off, it's just that it nevers seems to be as tight when you do that.

I would pull it back up a coat the edges. It will warp on you over time. Just my .02 cents.

Good luck

Re: 76 16' Starcraft Kingfisher project.............I hope!

Making some more progress... slowly. I wound up pulling the floor up and doing it the right way and sealing the edges of the floor. I got the floor in and covered with the Nautelex vinyl flooring. I love the floor, however the Nautelex 88 was terrible. I know I applied it right, however it never seemed to get tacky and the edges did not stick very well. It was super humid the day I did it, so not sure if that was the problem. I went over all the edges with contact cement and that did the trick. I think if I had to do it again I would use the contact cement, would have saved some money too. Front casting deck went in nicely along with my pedestal seat. I used the contact cement when I installed the Nautelex there and it worked great. TTavenier3 suggested I install a live well there. I would have loved to, however I am worried that I am going to have a weight issue and am really trying to keep the weight to a minimum. I did leave some room for storage though. The rear bench was installed along with two swivel seats. I opted to use the space under the seat for storage rather than flotation, but I put a lot more flotation under the floor then had been there so I hope I am ok there. I am ready for the tackle the center console now. Need to install the teleflex rotoary steering and electrical. I am getting close!!

This of course brings me to a question. I was planning on cutting a hole in the side of the console, running the rod end of the cable through and connecting it to the motor. Problem I found is the nut at the rod end that connects to the motor does not appear to move. If that nut does not moove how do I connect this and then pass the rotary portion into the console. I assume that nut must move and is just being stubborn, but I didn't want to force it just in case. I hope I explained that right, but will add a photo to help. Thanks again for all the help!!

Never mind on the nut question. I guess I should have tried the nut right next to it before I posted my question. I took another look at it and saw how the cable rod is attached to the motor. Thanks anyway.....

You have done a mighty job with the boat. You should be justifiably proud. I have just purchased my first ever boat at the tender age of 40. It is a starcraft but I struggle to identify the model; there are so few markings on it that I have no idea. However, after following this post, I am almost certain that mine is a 76 Starcraft Kingfisher 14' . I will post a picture if I can work out how to get a picture on here. All the best, Muzz.

Muzzy71, Sure does look like a Kingfisher, not sure on the year though. Your chine looks a little different, maybe because it's a 14'. Great little boat you have. I am very happy with the project. I knew very little about renovating a boat, but thanks to this site, I learned a ton. I will post some photo's very soon. I am pretty much done other than a few odds and ends. I took my family camping this weekend with it and it worked great. First day I took it to the boat ramp I got a ton of compliments on it. Good luck with your Starcraft!!

Re: 76 16' Starcraft Kingfisher project.............I hope!

Well for the most part I am done with my Starcraft Kingfisher project. I just looked at my first post and it was on Sept. 5th, so almost a year to the date. Kind of tough finding time, but I managed to sneak out in the garage after the kids went to bed and put the time in. All in all I am very happy with the results. Considering I did not know a thing about restoring a boat before I started. Thanks to this web site I learned a LOT! I still have to install the windshield and a few fishing odds and ends and she's done. I have taken it out a few times this past week and was super happy with the way she ran. We are limited to under 10hp where I fish here in NJ, so it is a little slow filled with the family and camping gear, but by myself or with one other fishing buddy, she moves just fine.

Thank you to everyone that helped out along the way, there is no way I could have gotten this project done without iboats!! Here are a few photo's of the finished product (well, 99% finished product).

Very nice Trevordog. Looks great. Enjoy the fishing you have earned it.

I think the next project should be to disguise an 18hp as a 9.9.:D

Muzz71....I think I know what I can do with my spare time, GO FISHING!!

64 osby....I'm with you on the 18hp, I don't mind cruising along with the 9.9 when were fishing, but at the end of the day you just want to get to the ramp.

Thanks again for the compliments!
