When I mix my PB to bed my transom I am wondering how much PB to mix I do not want to under mix but also do not want to waste alot either.

My transom is approximately 12sq ft. Would a half gallon of PB be sufficient or should I mix a gallon?

Who cares. This is important and you don't want to get stuck with your hand in your pocket. Crap I'm short and need to rip it out. Probably 2-3 qts.
I would also keep a couple on hand ready for a fast mix if necessary. Keep the drill charged and the goods right next to you.Hope you bought a paint mixer for the drill to use.
I don't go with metrics or such. I go with feel. Can't be bothered. That's my way.
Hopefully someone with a math head will chime in.
Best of luck tomorrow. Oh....the thrill of it.
Get a tile adhesive trowel to spread it. The throw away kind.

Makes sense. I will start with a gallon and then have 2 quarts on the ready. I bought a few cheap trowels for the job. I'm hoping my helping hand can make it tomorrow but life likes to get in the way of boat work lol so I will hope for the best and expect to have to wait an additional day.

Make the mixes but put in/break down into seperate containers. Why? Cause when that much is in 1 bucket it cooks faster
and unfortunately you can lose it. You can also put them into a cooler of beer and ice. That really helps to slow down the process of the heat.
Use a disposable paint pan slop it in and go. The pan helps to thin out the heat. I'm so use to EEEpppoooxxxyyy and it cooks fast so poly has some of those attributes but not as fast.

Thank you for the tips. I was going to mix up the pb then add the hardener once I am in the boat with transom propped up trowel it on fast and slap it on with my helper on the outside helping with the clamps once it is in place. If all goes well tomorrow I will have it all ready to go and my helper should be stopping by after work

I have to mix up some pb in the morning for the fillets on the transom where I had to put the 2 pieces together before I put a layer of CSM on the transom wood. So I will have a good idea of the working time.

Of course the rain came just in time to ruin my day of work:facepalm:.

I have a question about my outdrive my motor is a 1973 140. I know the gimble housing was replaced with a 165 and looking at the serial number of the drive it is 3642868 it seems the drive was also replaced. Can somebody confirm if this is a 165 outdrive or if these also came with the 140 motor?

I have been doing a little more research the serial numbers intermix so I am assuming they are the same drive for the 120-165 motors.

Well this was my first time mixing pb and definitely need to work on my fillets. Also made a mistake hopefully it will kick off.

I was originally going to mix 350ml so I had my hardner pre measured for 1% 3.5ml. Then decided to up the mix to 500ml to make sure I had enough but did not add an extra 1.5ml of hardner.

The place I bought my resin from said .7% is the lowest I can go and luckily it was exactly .7% hopefully it will kick just maybe take a little bit longer.

Oh....my! Does dings do appen! Sorry I did not know you had not done pb before. I would have suggested doing some practice till you felt comfortable hence the 5200.
Oh well you're going to be using alot of pb on the project so time to fiddle wit it.

Most of my fiberglass skills were for automotive body work, never needed to use PB. I also did transom wood for my 14ft aluminum but that was a easy bolt on type just encased it for waterproofing.

But I will be a PB pro by the end.

I just checked my fillets they are still very soft but have gelled the parts where I smoothed it out has kicked so hopefully it will be set tomorrow morning. If not I'll get some more practice!

Making the PB was easy just a stupid oversight on my part with the hardner (trying to get the fillets done before I had other things to take care of)

Well I dodged a bullet my fillets are no longer jelly:whoo:.

I will now wait until I have poured my resin in the cup before I measure out my catalyst, lesson learned. I like to change things up to often to pre measure things.

Got a coat of resin on the transom and then a layer of 1.5 CSM. Unfortunately I will not be getting the transom in today due to storms for the rest of today and tomorrow. hopefully it will miss us tomorrow though.

Coat of resin on wood:

Feeling pretty good considering last nights debacle.

Well the rain missed us and the transom is in! I probably glued my clamps to the boat lol but that's an easy fix.

I am going to leave the clamps on until the morning. Then fillet and tab.

Should I move to the stringers after or lay my 1708 first before the stringers?

Well all the clamps came off, a couple needed persuading with a hammer and the transom is solid! I have to grind a few blobs that I could not fillet due to the clamps and grind a spot of the csm and then reglass a piece to it on the wood where one of the clamps bonded.

For now I'm off to clean up the key hole and blobs. More grinding:facepalm:.

Got everything grinded down scuffed up and acetoned. The white spot in the bottom corner of the keyhole is not a bubble that is where the clamp stuck and had to grind back to good glass.
20200828_120337_compress33.jpg hopefully if time allows I will have my fillets done and tabbed in. But I have company coming over later so we will see :ballchain:
