Primer is done on gimbal ring and bellhousing

I almost went and got a couple rattle cans and painted these today but I stopped myself. I'm going to stick to painting all of it with the hvlp.

It's me again guys... Haven't forgot about me have you? Nothing's changed much as far as the rebuild is going just getting parts together and ready while it's cold. Here's what I tore into today...

3abd2285.jpg

I planning on a new gauge set so figured I'd try to accustom myself to how the wiring is done. Came across this lite bundle of joy...

0ea345d7.jpg

Seven wires spliced off of one...six going to each gauge and one to the ignition. Only good thing about it is how they made the power/ground/signal wires all one plug at the gauge as you can see in the next picture. If I go with teleflex gauges everything should hook right back up... But Faria would cause me to redo it all due to different spacing in the poles. Oh well just add it to the to-do list. Really I just wanted to prove I haven't been completely lazy this winter! :D hope everyone is doing well.

It's been awhile guys... A long while actually. Good news is its finally warm again and I'm back to work! If you remember I ended last years warm weather with getting most of my stringers installed, and also realizing my transom had to be redone... AGAIN... Due to some delamination from the hull! So that is where we begin....

After some precise cutting, by precise I mean almost in the wrong spot and through the hull, I began prying off the old/new transom.

Turns out 80% of it was still stuck... And very well I might add!

be48bc99.jpg

After two hours of me cussing at it she finally gave up!

989cacce.jpg

It's hard to see here but I did circle it to point the area out... This was at the base of the transom... I had filled in the area around the drain hole with thickened resin, that area I'm pointing out is a straight open pin hole from the drain right up to the transom wood. So if the boat ever got more than two inches of water in it somehow.. Water would have flowed up and got between the transom wood and hull!

New transom being waterproofed with csm.

And there she is installed... This time it was glued in with peanut butter so it's definatly not going anywhere! I finished the fillets up today and hopefully after the cold snap gets by this weekend I'll be able to get the tabbing and skin all done so I can jump back on stringers.

Looks fantastic! I gotta say, at the point I was ripping out my new transom, I would have been tossing the whole boat. :D

Glad to see it's coming back together for you.

Man, that really stinks having to re-do the transom... What a let down... However, I'm glad you dusted yourself off and got back in the saddle... The new one looks great...

Ryan, that was actually all over the span of about 3 weeks. I just haven't updated anything until yesterday. I only get a few days a week to work because it's either raining or to cool to fiberglass.

Quick overview... Transom... Done! You've seen it once before so here's a few quick pictures.

Then onto the bow stringers.... They went in fine, but laying down filets has become a royal pain due to the cramped nature of the area! Once I finally find a place to stand then I can't get my hand into the place I need to which made it sloppy work! Now I'm in the sanding process which is even worse!

But on the bright side... I found this little 7 year old beauty will only 40000 miles on her and couldn't pass it up! Needed something worthy of pulling the "new" boat once it's done! Only downside is that it eats up some of the funding!

Onto glassing the stringers in this week.. All that leaves after is making the rear stringers for the engine then capping everything before its deck time!!

Right on Marada looks good , pb is the way to go for sure, also I see you talking about water intrusion. That is one of my biggest concerns after doing all this work. I even went the extra mile and used ip 2000e it is used for a water barrier on the outside of a hull below the water line . I decided to put 4 coats in the bilge area , ski locker and gas tank. Don't know if it will help, but it cant hurt . More flexible then gelcoat . After I get done dealing with a family illness i will get back to mine.

Again mighty fine job

Cheers

Something like that... I talked them out of it a little seeing as how it had some hail damage. Other than that and a few usual scratches here and there its practically new. Interior is spotless.. Shes a little on the thirsty side but overall I love it so far. But back to the boat... Got a layer of 1708 down on one of the stringers today. I'm still pondering a way to sand some of those tight spots. And as far as using other coatings rather than gelcoat... I think I'm still going to stick with the gel! I like the way it looks plus it'll last longer than I'll probably keep the boat anyhow.

Re: 1992 Marada 1800MVB.. stringer, transom, deck restore

For sure I will be going for gelcoat outside the hull . I was going to put a barrier coat on mine before I decided to gelcoat the outside of the hull when I can get to it. Before I got into my restore i forgot about my wifes mothers cousin having a boat building buisness in PEI . Over the winter I got talking to him and he informed me that they( fishing boat builders) started using epoxy based products in the inside of the hull for waterproofing. They do use polyester resin to build the boats but waterproof after ( I know some of guys on here use stuff from home depot or lowes used for waterproofing in the construction trade) Since they started using epoxy based products for water proofing below deck , around gas tank area , etc, they have cut back on problamatic repairs that we don't usually see in a pleasure boat. For instance he said that as the hull flexes and they do in these fiberglass boats off the east coast waters they can get stress cracks and the epoxy has actually flexed enough to avoid the stress cracks and the gelcoat does not.

or maybe they have just become better boat builders ;)

so again it is a track record study by fishing boat builders that have put alot of time over the years to find better ways to waterproof as that is really the biggest concern with these boats.Like I said before I like to see how products stand up over the years of wear and tear ,be it a car restoration or a boat not by what the product says it can do on the can or advertising.. They have alot more water flying across the decks then we do.

Might even be a good selling feature

I just wanted to share these findings with whoever is following your thread.

Maybe it is overkill for us in our boats

Thanks for the info outback... It would definatly help seal things up alot more going that route, especially for fishing boats that normally sit in the water all the time! I don't think my pockets are deep enough for all that added protection though!:D

Re: 1992 Marada 1800MVB.. stringer, transom, deck restore

Just as I said.. Basically having to stand on my head in order to sand and PB up in the bow of this boat had to be the biggest pain in the butt... Well I begin to cap stringers! I first tried using CSM but it just wasn't going to work out and would take forever and a day to get it all done.. So I moved on to frisco's idea of using 1708 and stapling it tight on the stringers. Which it works but I don't think there's any way to do it and not end up with some bubbling, atleast on the tops. After two afternoons though I am about 2/3 of the way done with everything from the rear bulkhead forward. Here's a few shots I got here and there.

Once the rest up front is done that leaves me with getting the bilge stringers figured out and installed, put in a false floor in the fuel tank compartment and ski locker, then it's time for the deck. Making baby steps but that's better than nothing. Till next time fella's.

Updates...gas tank forward is done as far as stringers are concerned. The bilge stringers are 80% finished, and should be completed this week. False floors for the gas tank area and ski locker are cut but need to be glassed in. Pictures aren't up to date but here are a few from along the way!

Nice work... That's a big step to compete! You'll be decking very soon! It's pretty bad that I can tell where you bought your acetone just by the color scheme, on the can... Man, I've gone through a lot of that stuff... Looking good...keep plugging away!

Haha yea I think I should be part owner is "said" company as much money as I've spent in that place! Thanks for stopping by man. How's your build coming along.. I know I had to search pretty deep in the forum to find where you last updated your thread. This isn't acceptable!

Quick question guys.. I am going to glue the support for the step out onto the stringer in the next day or so. I am currently out of milled fibers and will be next week before I get some. Will using just a resin/aerosil mixture be strong enough to glue with? If so it would help out and keep me from being at a stand still for a week.
