Re: 1992 Marada 1800MVB.. stringer, transom, deck restore
For sure I will be going for gelcoat outside the hull . I was going to put a barrier coat on mine before I decided to gelcoat the outside of the hull when I can get to it. Before I got into my restore i forgot about my wifes mothers cousin having a boat building buisness in PEI . Over the winter I got talking to him and he informed me that they( fishing boat builders) started using epoxy based products in the inside of the hull for waterproofing. They do use polyester resin to build the boats but waterproof after ( I know some of guys on here use stuff from home depot or lowes used for waterproofing in the construction trade) Since they started using epoxy based products for water proofing below deck , around gas tank area , etc, they have cut back on problamatic repairs that we don't usually see in a pleasure boat. For instance he said that as the hull flexes and they do in these fiberglass boats off the east coast waters they can get stress cracks and the epoxy has actually flexed enough to avoid the stress cracks and the gelcoat does not.
or maybe they have just become better boat builders
so again it is a track record study by fishing boat builders that have put alot of time over the years to find better ways to waterproof as that is really the biggest concern with these boats.Like I said before I like to see how products stand up over the years of wear and tear ,be it a car restoration or a boat not by what the product says it can do on the can or advertising.. They have alot more water flying across the decks then we do.
Might even be a good selling feature
I just wanted to share these findings with whoever is following your thread.
Maybe it is overkill for us in our boats
