Re: 1992 Marada 1800MVB.. stringer, transom, deck restore

Anyone have any suggestions on what would be the best way to do the 1708 layup? Should I tab each section to eachother then cover it all in one solid run a few times?Due to the 100 degree heat we are having I don't think I will be able to get the entire thing done in one layup... So what are my best options to provide the most strength?

And let's scratch one more thing off the list!
Wooowee that's alot of 1708... Total off three layers...first layer was separate sections on each corner. Next two layers were full pieces from top to bottom... She is SOLID!

And completely finished...

I've got the day off work tomorrow so I'm going to get the reliefs cut in the rear bulkhead for the fuel lines and cap the bulkhead and I will be ready to start cutting wood for the deck! The motor mount blocks are going to be made after the deck is in because they sit level with the deck.

Nice work!....it is a real pain glassing in this heat isn't it..I've had a bit of experience with that..not fun...Are you working outside? I found it best to wait till there was shade when doing any glassing on mine..otherwise you have to work really fast...I also keep my resin in air conditioning, and only bring it out to ourt then back in the air..sometimes I have kept in in a cooler with ice...it helps...

The boat is sitting under a carport which is shaded by trees most of the day. I havent had that much problem with resin kicking... I've been doing small batches and only had one start gelling on me today. If your wanting to lay up alot of stuff of small stuff in a hurry this heat is great! I'm just not looking forward to next week when I get to try on that Tyvek suit .. Gloves... Hood... Goggles.. Respirator.. And all the rest of that good itch stopping wardrobe so I can grind out the deck lip! Yippie!

Well I think I have finally received the last package of things I need to order! Everything that's left can be picked up local. I spent Friday realizing I didn't take the tools I needed with me to work on the boat so I got little done. Plus it being a day off work for once I really wasn't in the mood to work anyway. I did cut the bulkhead for the fuel line reliefs and started to cap the bulkhead. So far I've used 1708 to cap with because csm was to much of a pain to work with when I tried it in the bow but i decided to try it again here since there were so many corners. Surprisingly it worked great... I did round the edges alot more and yea it takes some more time but it came out great. I was able to cap about 1/3 of the stringer with what scrap csm I had with me.

Hopefully tomorrow i can get that finished up... Get the gimbal housing fitted so I can mark and drill my steering reliefs... and get all the cleats for the deck roughed in and coated in resin. Ahhh it's nice to be at this stage!

On another note... And I'm jumping ahead a few steps here but I need to plan ahead for this. What I've always heard is to never reuse the holes that attach the cap to the hull... Always redrill new ones. Obviously the chances of the old ones lining up are slim to none anyway but what are you supposed to fill the old holes with? I'm planning to reuse the original aluminum rub rail and just replace the rubber insert... I can't justify spending twice the price on freight as a new one cost. But the main thing is what to use to fill the holes. I know I'll probably get the answer of thickened epoxy but are there other alternatives?

You are using poly on your build right? I ask because you mentioned thickened epoxy. Yes, thickened resin (PB) with some CSM is probably going to be the "go to" answer. However, you might could use some filling or fairing compound (like Marine Tex or something). I am sure the pros will advise, and I do thinks is a good idea to fill the old holes and use new ones. I wish I had known you needed metal rub rail... The starcraft I sent to the dump had a metal one that was in pretty good shape... I was just to lazy to remove it before I sent her on to glory...

Keep plugging.

Thanks Patrick but my rails were still fine... I just need a new insert.... Then again I may not. I'm going to try and reuse the original. We shall see... Anything that doesn't cost me more cash is fine by me!

Another quick question... One or two layers of csm on the underside of the deck? I'm using 1.5oz... It sure would save some resin if I can get away with one layer underneath!

Just one layer needed. Make sure to precoat the wood first and the edges.

Ok that's the answer I was hoping for! After losing almost an entire bucket or resin to water intrusion plus having to redo the transom and all those PB fillets I'm sneaking up on about 30 gallons! So just having to do one layer will sure help! Thanks again Wood!
Capped the bulkhead today... Deck lip grinding begins tomorrow.... I can see the light!

Re: 1992 Marada 1800MVB.. stringer, transom, deck restore

So I took this in three steps... First the rough rough install... Cardboard

Then the rough...
Pink foam sheathing

Then the final...
3/4 ply

I had everything laid out so two sheets would finish everything but the ski locker since I had half a sheet left over from the stringers... WELL as you can see in the photo below that lowes is no longer concerned with quality on their high dollar panels... Or we're they ever?!

DE6D30FB-04AE-49D5-920F-62A8DF0FF0B9-11302-00000C5AF6A30D8C.jpg

Never noticed that there were so many voids on the edge of that sheet nor that half the thing was delaminating! Oh well what's another $30.

Well there she is.. All cut out! Also got all my deck cleats cut.. so once I get the underside glassed and those coated in resin it's time to install!

Are MEKP mix ratios the same for gelcoat as it is for regular resin?

It sure does! It was nice not having to squeeze down in a little one foot hole for atleast one day!

Re: 1992 Marada 1800MVB.. stringer, transom, deck restore

Well guys... It's warm again so I'm back! Time to get this boat finished up. Here's where I am... Final cleats for the deck are going in this week. About 1/3 of the deck is glued and screwed in. Ski locker has been gelcoated and fuel tank compartment will soon follow. This will lead me into the tabbing of the deck and then foaming. I believed I asked this question a few posts back but I'm still stuck on it... What will be the best and/or easiest way to fill the holes from where the cap originally mounted to the hull? That's one thing that's not discussed alot in most of the build threads. Thanks again for following and all the help so far! It's time to get rolling.. I miss the lake!

As you can see in the first picture I got a new bow eye support made up and glassed in. Holes need to be drilled out still but it's done. All cleats are installed... Gas tank area is gelcoated. I spent most of the day getting the carpet glue off the side of the hull. MEK alone wasn't cutting it so I started alternating that with a DA with 60 grit and got most of it off. Few days the deck should be getting tabbed in. Still need a option for filling the holes in hull from the cap. I'm leaning towards just using PB.
