You will have such a great boat when you're done. Keep up the great work. Would love to lend a "helpful hand" on something like that!!

I suppose PL should dry in 72 hours...

Keel stringer is UNinstalled! I really didn't like how that PL was coming out. It was still only halfway dry and had big air pockets in it. Plus how easily it tore out left me less than impressed. New plan is to rip another pipe in half then bed and fillet it in peanut butter. This will allow me to jump right to tabbing the same day. Oh well when you mess up it just teaches you how to not do it the next time!

My experience with the pl was somewhat similar. It never worked for me . I even let the PL it sit for 10 days second try. It still reacted with the 435 resin in some areas. I even ground the fillet PB material I used to finish my filllets back off the PL after sitting a few days just to see. I found the PL was like a toffee consistency and I could scrape it off under the PB. I also found that beads that I let cure on the hull in sanded and prepped areas for a test , I could pull up. It does not bond very well to cured fiberglass.
I would stick to pb myself. I know alot here use it, but I have seen a few complaining about it. It all depends what you are using it for I guess.

I still may try it to bed the stringers in PL but I will use just enough to bed and then fillet with PB... I couldn't imagine how much it would take to bed all the stringers in that.

If you don't use PL how will you keep your stringers vertical for glassing???

One could brace across the top with 1x2 brad nailed in... Everything is held in place while you fill in under everything with PB. Like I said though I'm probably still using PL to bed all the wood stringers then doing the fillets with PB. But the keel stringer is getting done completely with PB. I need it dry as soon as possible to get it glassed in because it has to be finished before any other stringer can be installed.

Keel stringer RE-installed.... And I'm tired! Spent about 6 hours on it and I am very happy with the outcome. Made sure I prepped everything really good... Did as Wood mentioned and used pipe cleaner on the entire pipe followed by a good sanding, and got to mixing PB.

Yanked on it just to make sure it had a good bond and had the hull flex up with it so were good and stuck! On to the tabbing....

Two layers of 1708... One 8 1/2" one 10 1/2" wide by 50" long put in wet on wet with minimum 6" overlaps at each section... It's STRONG! Had to work each section with a chip brush until it gelled to keep the air bubbles out. Do still have a few small bubbles here and there but after what I started out with I'm happy having as few as I did! I earned a cold one and some advil for my back today I do believe!:D

Moving forward a little. About 2/3 of the stringers are in and filleted. Still need to get the bilge area figured out and built, but I know ive got limited days of warm weather so I'm getting as much fully glassed as I can.

I've got a bucket of resin that got left outside for a few days and I'm thinking got water in it somehow... Has a milky swirl in it. I used a little of it when I did the fillets on the transom and it turned white when aerosil was added. It hardened up fine but is this stuff still useable? I'd hate to lose 3 gallons of resin but if it's bad then it's bad.

Spent this weekend finishing up fillets, and I must say that is a slow tedious thing! But I managed to get it done and started tabbing where I could.

This was a tight little spot to work in... I had my fears about it but turned out pretty good!

Since I had the roll of 6" tape I was able to lay down a full 88" length at one time. I'm starting to get the hang of laying down glass and things are rolling a little smoother.

Tomorrow is the last day of warm weather we have for the week so im hoping to finish the entire gas tank compartment. That leave me with needing to get the stringers in the bilge built while it's cold... Plus get the ones in the make the ski locker. Then I just have to hope for more warm temps!

Drilled the holes for the transom assembly today and did a test fit. Everything went in fine.. A little snug but it went it. I had to work it around to get it pulled back out which let me notice that the outer skin has broke loose from the transom wood around the keyhole in places. Apparently the PL didn't hold well... This thing is already completely tabbed and skinned in so what are the options here. Everything will be pulled back together once the final install is done but still. I'm beginning to very much not like using PL for this type of use!

On another note I completely broke the transom assembly down. Considering pulling the gimbal ring off and repainting.. If I don't it'll atleast give me something to mess with while it's cold.

Sorry to hear about your luck with PL Like I said earlier after using PL in a few places I found it had no bond strength to any cured fiberglass. Gelcoat would be in that category. I never used it at all after my findings. It is great for bonding wood and a filler but to bond to fiberglass it is a no go in my books. I don't know what to say to fix your problem but from what I can vision it is not a good situation to have the outer skin loose. Hope the PL gurus have a suggestion for you.

Yea I'm hoping to find a solution to this other than cut it out and start over. If that's what has to be done so be it but that's alot of glass and resin lost. Plus I really don't want to grind all that filler down! It seems to only be affecting the lower 1/4 of the key hole everything above that is still stuck... For now atleast but this is a small transom.

Well guys I've been MIA for awhile.. Temps have dropped and put me at a standstill on glassing. Days I get that are warm are days it's raining or about to rain so doesn't help much. As of right now I've decided I'm cutting the transom back out and redoing it unless anyone see's this and has a fix without tearing it out. So there's where I'm at... In the meantime Ive been working on the transom assembly.

There she is fully broken down ready to be cleaned and painted. I got extremely lucky and nothing was seized. Actually the upper swivel shaft just fell right out. I'm still planning on replacing it with the SS one though. Right now I'm just picking at the little things so it's all ready to go next spring.

Hey marada,
Glad to see another resto thread from the magnolia state. Just stumbled across your thread and wanted to wish you luck. I am a couple of hours south of ya, but if you ever need a hand, or want to compare notes, let me know. You have great boat, and it's going to better than new when you are done. Keep up the good work.

You are lucky that nothing was frozen. Mine was a whipping!

Believe me I had a hammer and chisel out waiting because I just knew it was going to be seized!

Thanks man... I've looked through your thread but never noticed where you were from. I can take all the luck I can get... Going to be a busy spring next year trying to finish everything!
