If it was me and it's not, I'd find another L drive and drop it in. I have seen a few sold on Ebay or boats parted with them.

Be sure you consult some people such as the aftermarket bracket manufacturers about the height. As you move the motor back you need to move it up. Too low and you swamp the motor. I'd also be concerned about the center of gravity- yes, B'liner did make an outboard version of that hull, but the outboard was tucked right into the stern against it, not suspended out back a couple feet.

By no means am I a naysayer, heck I chime in on the stern drive IO forum every time someone wants to hop up their engine and all kinds of people tell 'em it won't work, I stick up for them.

The work you have done so far is very good, keep at it.

If you are going with an outboard motor bracket, either purchased or home made, I suggest you beef up the area of the transom where the bracket will bolt on. Adding a pair of knee braces would add a lot of regidity to the transom. Build the knee braces with a large mating surface to the transom so it will take both pushing and pulling stresses. Remember that a bracket will have a lot of leverage on the transom while it is on the trailer and being bounced around on the road.

What do you mean by Knee Braces?

Cheap, quick and dirty foam removal:

Don't worry about hitting the hull you'll not do any damage and you'll hear it touch. saves a lot of time and work.

Hay DR Cox if you look on my transom here , on the out side is a knee brace , normal on is just a pice of plywood that is cut so that it angles like a 45 degree angle down !! I am putting shelf on mine thats why there not angled !! John

Usually they are bracing between the transom and a stringer, but they can be between the transomstringer and the hull Like jcsercsa showed.

A heafty piece if plywood is usually cut in a triangle shape and attached to the side of the stringer and to the transom with the bottom and vertical sides about 18" or so long. This really ties the transom and stringers together making a very solid foundation for the outboard and/or motor bracket.

I too am going with an outboard bracket (swim platform style) for my project and have learned a ton just from a couple of phone calls.

I will interested to see what you do with these "knee braces" - be sure to post some pics!

Looks good!

James

Wow thats looking like a lot of work. I have the exact same boat, but mine is not in nearly as bad of shape. I am really interested in seeing how your convertionn to an OB goes.

I have not had much trouble getting parts for my L-Drive , but with all the negativity they seem to get I guess there must be a few problems with them.

I'm pretty sure DrCox canned the L drive project and bought another boat. I tried to find the post, but can't. Maybe it was in a PM he sent me.
