Re: 1988 SunRunner 235 Weekender

This weather is for the birds! We have had one of the mildest winters I have known and now that I'm ready to start glassing, it gets cold.....umphhh

The original swim platform is falling apart and the brackets are bent/broken. I like the classic look of platforms that are made of wood and have chosen eastern cherry to build the new one. I started planing stock and ordered the replacement brackets from Fore and Aft Marine (They had them for 89.00)

Re: 1988 SunRunner 235 Weekender

Anyone with a classic boat may appreciate this.
The PO of the Starcraft Jet Star currently in my care had replaced the dash panel with some plywood and covered it in black vinyl removing the speedometer. I found two Airguide gauges over the weekend that will look great in the new dash.
I am looking for a place to chrome plate some of the parts off the boats. Anyone have any recommendations of places they have used?

That is going to a great looking boat if the weather would straighten up here in central Ohio! You might try chromemasters they plate mostly bikes, but would be worth giving them a call here is their phone number (615) 256-9828.

Thanks jjkc, I will give them a call. Where are they located?

Spring will be here soon! I hope the weather continues with having a couple warm days each week. I ordered 10 gallons of polyester and 20 yards of glass today.

Re: 1988 SunRunner 235 Weekender

This is the bottom of the swim platform. It's 84 inches wide by 25 inches deep and 2.25 inches thick. I'm weighing the idea of a rub rail or a flat wooden face. I like the look of the wood but a rub rail is a bit more tolerant of docks....

Any ideas for rub rail that might look good on wooden platform?

435 Polyester, 1708 and CSM glass will be in on Friday :) Also got some 635 Epoxy and micro spheres to repair the damaged areas form the old swim platform brackets.I'm working on the new platform and grinding the hull till I cant function every day. My goal is to get her on the water for a formal naming ceremony by June.

It's getting warm enough to start glassing my project but the shop is getting the spring repairs. A Chris Craft center console came in with what looks some major transom issues, stress cracks at every corner of the stern. This may take precedence over my boat and the owners, father in laws boat needs to have the stringers re-riveted to the ribs (tinny) ASAP.

God bless the folks that work with glass for a living.... I go home itching like I sleep on poison ivy......

Re: 1988 SunRunner 235 Weekender

What a great day to work on the boat, plenty of sunshine and almost 50 deg.

The day started with stripping and painting a new axel for a customers trailer. He brought it in for storage and said both tires are wearing on the outer edge. Turns out both spindles were bent. Southwesttrailer had the axel for 108 and two rims and tires for 120.
I found some time to do some grinding in my boat and I burned up my first grinder. It was only 14 bucks at Harbor Freight and I have a feeling there will be many more. Also did some polishing on the stern in preparation to filling the old holes and mounting the new brackets for the platform.

Cover the vent holes for the brushes on the grinder with a 3M Scotch Brite pad held on with a rubber band. Helps filter the glass dust out of the grinder. Also cover yourself with Baby powder before grinding, it will really help keep the itch off.

Thanks , thats a good idea!
I was happily grinding away and my eyes started burning. I set the grinder down to check my goggles thinking it was the dust irritating my eyes.....thats when i noticed the smoke coming out of the grinders vent holes.

This is the first coating of Epoxy on the new platform. Im using the US Composites 635 Thin Epoxy for this.
