Re: 1988 SunRunner 235 Weekender

I spent the past two evenings working on the damage to the stern where the swim platform brackets attached. I started by grinding the damaged area to @3/16" in depth, dewaxed the area, and filled with poly/micro spheres. The first attempt (thermometer read 58) did not kick with 25% more MEKP than called for.....this did not work.... The second attempt with 50% more MEKP worked great! (thermometer read 69)
I also found time to cut a stringer a two ribs.

The previous should have read " the stringers have been bedded...
I started glassing all of the joints this morning at 9 am and finished at 8:30 pm. I followed woodonglass's layup of CSM, 1708, CSM, and 1708.

Re: 1988 SunRunner 235 Weekender

The stringers are 18" high, if I follow woodonglasse's recipe of doing the layup to the top, I will have one heck of a build up.
At this point I have;
Bedded the stringers and bulkheads in "Peanut butter" made of, 1/4 chop, Cabosil, and polyester resin.
4" of 1.5 oz CSM
4" of 1708
6" of 1.5 oz CSM
6" of 1708
Do I need to build the layups up to the top of the stringer? Or can I just lay 1.5 oz CSM and resin to the top for water proofing?
I'm only working on the sides, I will layup the stringer cap this week.

FWTW, This is the factory bedding/layup at port side bulkhead aft of the kitchen. They used, wood flour peanut butter for bedding followed by resin and 2" chopped glass. Note the bulkhead is not even near the sidewall...

Re: 1988 SunRunner 235 Weekender

I used some titanium oxide mixed in the resin to turn it white and applied it to the bottoms of the holds. I think I'm going to grind it and do the sides also.

IMG_0967.jpg

I finished glassing the sides of the stringers last night and got center section removed this evening.

The progress is moving faster that I planed an so is the volume of resin I'm going through.

I covered the plywood going under the fuel tank in 1.5 oz CSM for water resistance. The factory stuff was solid but had some funk on the bottom side.

I put another coat of white in the hold, I like the way this is looking.

I got out the reciprocating saw Friday morning and removed the starboard sole. I found this a bit shocking...

This is the bulkhead that went port to starboard just fore of the fuel tank. Note the light under it and the @2" block of wood that acts as a contact point...also no foam....

I came across some SunRunner brochures on another site, where they touted their superior construction.....
This is another bulkhead...

Makes ya wonder.....

Re: 1988 SunRunner 235 Weekender

The weather has not been conducive to laying glass so I have been working on the swimplatform. There is now 5 coats of slow epoxy on the top and sides.
I broke down last week and dragged the Starcraft out, checked the engine, fueled it up and hit the water on Friday. Only caught one fish but you can’t beat spending the day out there.

The past month has been a whirlwind of impellers and oil changes...and one bad transom in a SeaNymph
But i'm back to working on my boat. :)

Fitting the center bulkhead was a PITA...

Re: 1988 SunRunner 235 Weekender

I have a 89 Sunrunner 235 Weekender. I am having issues with the Wiring. All of the Battery cables were disconnected from the battery, Starter and slave solenoid. I was looking through your pictures to try to identify what went where. I can get the motor to start but then the when I activate any of the dash instruments it shorts out. It seems the way I have it hooked up I get a 8 volt positive current flowing through the ground wire. ?????? Any pictures of the transom wiring would be greatly appreciated.

I have a factory wiring schematic I can scan. Give me a day or two.
The best thing you can do for yourself is pull everything off the back of the boat. It makes it much easier to work on the wiring and is not difficult.

Re: 1988 SunRunner 235 Weekender

That would be the most amazing gift. I have spent hours and hours on the internet trying to figure out what I am doing wrong. We had some amazing weather here the last couple of weeks and I wanted nothing more than to take her out and drop the crab pots. Removing the cover on the transom of the boat is a this fall projected project as I have the same soft spots that all non covered Sunrunners seem to have. Not as extreme as what you have described. Can't wait to see your finished pictures. Thank you again

Nice Looking Boat!

When you start the repairs this fall consider starting a thread in the repair section.

From all that I have learned on this site, documenting my trials and tribulations will be the least I can do. I am sure some of the work will be on going as weather permits. I am not fortunate enough to have the nice shop I see your boat stored in. Someday, right???

15 gallons of resin and 25 yards of fabric later, I'm ready to cap the stringer/bulkheads and set the sole!
