this is what you get when you use used heads previously run in salt water and you try to add a screen to keep the HX from fouling.

this is from one 4 hour run.

the heads were chemically cleaned with oxalic acid, mechanically cleaned with a section of steel cable and a drill motor and then baked at the machine shop.

it not worth the savings to go used if you want to run a heat exchanger.

draining coolant to pull the T-stat water outlet and the upper hose to the HX to clean it out is a PITA on the water.

it was the merlin heads I bought used when I built the motor. they were on a poker run boat for one to two seasons.

I was trying to keep the budget low....

the block came from a 1998 3500 tire delivery truck that had over 300,000 miles. I knew the heads were used in salt, even with the best efforts of myself and the machine shop, we suspected that there was still rust in the water passages. hence the reason I put a stainless screen between the T-stat and the HX.

the screen has been doing its job to keep the debris from the HX...... to the point it has plugged nearly every time out.

using this as a point for those that want to put a HX on a motor that was previously used in salt water........ not worth the hassle. if you want to put on a HX, start with a fresh water block or heads or used heads from the automotive world, or with new block and heads.

spending an extra $500-$600 at the time would have net me new heads and saved the head aches of dealing with the scale.

I plan on running a corrosion flush thru the motor to try to loosen up some more of the crud as I am getting tired of pulling the water neck to clear the debris.

on another note, the stainless water inlet fitting I made was a bit restrictive, I had been using a stock one for the past few outings, my buddy brought back some plastic ones from Bulgaria. $14 USD vs $60 here in the states.

going to modify the stainless one eventually, however the plastic ones should work for a bit without corroding.

got the replacement Holley carb coming. and yes, @achris, its a holley and it will be a franken carb very specifically built when I am done.

new to me carb came in with incorrect secondary metering block and someone butchered the throttle plates to get it to idle correctly because of that.

contacted the seller and got a partial refund.

going with billet metering blocks.

specs - 950HP, marine J-tubes, progressive throttle linkage, re-worked throttle plate with new blades and maybe a shaft kit, PCE metering blocks.....

will need to tune the jets and the squirters. starting with #31's.

thinking of going with a 50cc on the secondary because of the progressive linkage. If so, may jump to #37 squirter

she wanted the bar stools at the breakfast bar painted white like the new chairs she just purchased so she can distress them.....

Now onto the new carb (at least new to me)

Here is the carb....with the butchered throttle plates and wrong secondary metering plate

date code puts it 318th day of 1996

so one of the first things...... pull off the base plate

then pull the poly sight glasses. best way is to use a piece of hose and a pliers

then pull the fuel bowls

note the float level. the primary was adjusted to nearly no travel. whom ever worked on this carb prior was a butcher and an idiot.

pulled off the metering plates, note the busted alignment pins from whom ever worked on this carb last. this is common if you do not know what you are doing and try to pry the metering plate loose. you must carefully work it loose off the pins with a pair of pocket knifes or similar thin tools

then onto first go around of cleansing. since I am using the PCE billet metering blocks, no need to even touch these.

first pass at cleaning is foamy engine cleaner and a tooth brush.... yes, old school

the secondary shaft was replaced at one time with one from a different carb. so I will need to get a shaft kit.

first pass at cleaning is done, parts are now in a bucket after being hosed down with another dose of engine cleaner to deal with tomorrow. all passages have been chased with both wire and carb cleaner. all gaskets surfaces have been scrubbed with scotchbright where needed......

Tomorrow I can at least assemble the main body after re-assembling the admirals chairs....

new throttle plates and a few parts are a few days out.

New throttle shafts on their way..... Holley was back-ordered, however one of the dealers on fleabay had stock.

I must say, you are one busy guy . . . (y) Boat and house projects . . . it becomes a balancing act. :unsure:

I've also been doing a litany of house projects, now that the boat is put away for winter. . . . New deck, new front door, new slider, fix rotting trim, fixing rotted windows, painting, fixing roof/gutter system. It snowed about 4" on Friday . . . so some things are getting pushed off until spring time.

pictures later, however just pulled the fuel system apart on the solstice, painted the carb and helped the neighbors kid with his truck body work.
