we didnt get far.......

the holeshot has issues, she is running lean until the RPM's get up to pull the 2ndaries open. pretty sure this is why most BBC's run 850 mechanical secondary double pumpers.

going to try to adjust the vac secondary spring and jets first...... if that doesnt work, then a new carb.....

the rain pointed out that we have a windshield glazing leak, the cabin hatch leaks and the windshield wiper and cabin doors are not yet installed.........

also, chasing an over-heat could be the B8 props, however thinking its raw water flow. the raw water pump is leaking a fair amount (ok, its spraying like a !@#$%@#$$#%@#$#$%$#@#$%@#$%@#$% fountain). the seal took a crap, and if I dont fix it now, it will cause a big suck-hole in the wallet...... have to look into replace or rebuild. also, going to pull the HX off and see if its plugged on the glycol side. I had put in a piece of stainless screen to catch any rust scale from the heads as they had been previously used in a raw-water cooled application.

If i have to replace the raw water pump, going to replace with this one

the impeller is 1-7/8" long vs the stock 1-1/8"

Here is a pic of the Admiral holding the boat prior to departing....

Bummer again, don't think you need a bigger raw water pump as yet. I'm using standard Bravo and have no issue with heat other then the oil temp, which was fixed with a bigger cooler

Not sure what I need yet, need to look at the glycol side first. I may have ham-strung the system by adding a filter screen to the inlet of the HX

I know the existing pump needs a rebuild as it is now spraying about 2 gallons per mile

I also know i added some restriction with the exhaust and the oil cooler.

Good news, oil is cool

Going to also add a hose connection at the transom to run on the hose vs the muffs

Sounds like you are still working through some teething pains on the 'new' (refurbished) boat. I see from your picture that there is rope on a boat. Once the rope has a purpose, it becomes a 'line'. :)

the hatch leak is my biggest concern. we are coming into the rainy season here.

pretty sure that if the raw water pump is spitting water out while putting along, its probably also sucking air. will know tonight when I pull the top hose off the HX and do some investigating.

agree on the purpose it becomes a XXXXXX line.

well, two smoking guns on the over-heat

the stainless screen I put in the top hose from the thermostat housing to catch rust flakes that didnt come loose from the heads when I first got them and soaked in oxalic acid, then had them baked prior to re-refreshing........ works...... it kept all this from plugging the HX. next round out, will bring some extra coolant and tools along

also need a new o-ring, apparently pinched this one when I built the motor 2 years ago

the raw water pump is not only leaking at the seals, the bearings are starting to go..... 33 years may be a long time. a nice trail of bearing grease, bits of metal and water spraying from the impeller.

existing raw water pump is a Johnson F5B, getting replaced with a Johnson F6B-9

Scott - that boat sure is giving you a run for your money

Would a small seawater strainer be better than a simple screen? Not sure one would fit where it would need to go in the cooling system to catch rust scale from the engine.

Ted, this is on the discharge of the engine to the inlet of the HX. unfortunately, the distance between the end of the T-stat elbow and the HX is about 1/4" Had I started with virgin heads, this wouldn't be an issue.

i would guess the rust flaking would have subsided, or will shortly subside as the heads were acid flushed and baked.

found something out today when ordering the new raw water pump...........

its a Johnson F6B-9, part number 10-24946-01

EXACT same part varies in sale price from $131 to $425 from Florida to Washington state.

most of the on-line retailers pull from the EXACT same warehouse. so Hodges Marine, BoeMarine and every other source this side of the Mississippi pull from one warehouse....... which ran out of this pump yesterday (because everyone east of the Mississippi had pricing between $131 and $145)

gone are the options of getting the pump cheap and fast.

ended up getting the raw water pump from California (33 in the warehouse in California) and paying a whole lot more in shipping to get here for the weekend.

Now were in a hurry
BTW we are to :D

Had to get boat on water to get Admiral off-center and boat-forward....... now that its been soft-splashed, she is pressing me to finish the stuff not finished and get the few things repaired.

she already has a bunch of friends scheduled......

looks like no more side-bar distracting projects for a while (like the bathroom remodel, repainting, etc. etc. etc.)

So, spent Saturday swapping the raw water pump, changing some tune on the carb, fixing where I put a hole in the vinyl.....

So, Sunday...... planned to take the boat out....... and because of all the rain, the boat and truck were then stuck in the back yard

the inside wheels on the trailer usually tear the turf a bit, however this time, it dug in, then once the truck broke thru the soft ground..... the truck was stuck.....

managed to find some of the sprinkler plumbing, marked it because that zone does need service.

Sorry to hear about the troubles
How did you get the new pump on? It needs larger hoses

Both pumps were for 1-1/4 hoses, that was the easy part. Getting to the bolts for the anti rotation bracket was the biggest issue. One is behind the water pump lower hose

Need to drop down from the B8 props to a B7 set as im slightly over-propped.

new raw water pump pushing between 20 and 25 psi (RPM dependent) when on plane
oil temp about 180 at 50mph

coolant temp about 170 on the gauge (under the 180 mark)

found that an 8 foot VHF antenna mounted on a tower is no match for a bridge.......

Thwack.....thuck....thuck...thuck.....phuck.....

have a new VHF antenna coming
