Just skimmed the whole thread. Nice work. Maybe one day I will do one of these little ski boats.

That would be fun to watch. I just (in the last 2 weeks) went back and read the end of your Sea-Ray thread. It was one of the first restore threads that I read here on iBoats probably 3 years or so ago (maybe longer). And it helped me to believe that I could do this type of work.

Is your family still enjoying the Sea Ray? Is that your main "daily-driver" lake boat?

Austin - Sorry to do a little thread jack here...but we have Frisco here, kind of a mini-iBoats celebrity. All we need now is BigBoatinOkie (is that how he spelled it?) and didn't he actually restore a tournament ski boat?

Timr71 I sold that boat in 2014 and restored a CXV-18 since then. Then I went through a divorce, and a bit of a depression... but I got my head on straight and I am trying to get a new restoration started on 1980 Glastron Scimitar.

Wow...hang in there. I hope you're doing well. Looking forward to the next restore. Best of luck!

That looks like it will be solid back there.... Nice work!

Thanks Tim! The extra little pieces of wood are to keep the gas tank above the rudder mechanism. I havent seen it before in these restores so figured I would highlight it for people reading through. I got a good solid connection between the wood and am happy with how the fillets worked out, every time is a little better.

The one thing I'm regretting is not taking all the hardware off the back of the boat. Right before doing this last bit I took the exhaust ports out and ended up getting some dust onto the surfaces I was hoping to glass. I realized that they were going to be in the way of laying down new glass so I had to do something.

Its the same as most things though. Just trying to do the "minimal" amount of deconstruction so that I have less to put back together, but end up having to remove it in the long run. Like the water intake, wire holders, exhaust ports, pylon screws, etc. Word to the wise, from the fool.... Just remove anything that COULD be in the way, save yourself the headache.

Thanks Frisco! I appreciate you following along. Being a skier, it was a no brainer to do a boat like this, but its certinally got a little different spin than a cruiser. Which is fun! Everyone gets to learn something.

Sorry to hear about the past couple rough years, glad to hear you've got your head back up and turning your skilled hands to something constructive!

No problem Tim! I'm just happy to have so much activity on the forum! Trying to keep it active and posting my updates, but half the fun is talking with like minded people on here. Jack away!

So saying that, after I pulled the exhaust ports off the transom I noticed the bolts were completely rusting out, one even snapped when trying to unthread the nut. Looking online there are a few options, one of which is just a simple thread on coupling. Does anyone have experience on the +/- of these options?

The one I took out had a 3 threaded rod configuration. I would prefer to return to the same holes... but if it makes more sense would look at filling and redrilling.

Sorry I forgot to take pictures of the old ones. I will get some and post them tonight.

All this skiing talk inspired me so when a long time friend asked me to come down to long beach island yesterday to do some water skiing i could not resist. Never mind the fact that is am 52 and have not skied in 4 yrs I went out got right up on my shortline on my right foot and my friends combo on my left, after a few minutes on 2 I dropped the combo and successfully made a couple slalom turns before running out of gas. All in all I was very pleased with myself and look forward to the next time., although dead flat days like yesterday on LBI few are far an few between. I have to thank this thread for inspiring me to get out there and do it as it really is like riding a bike you never forget, I had a blast.

Good for you!

I also did a lot of skiing when growing up, was out of it for 30+ years, and have since had a couple of opportunities to go. Can’t say it was quite Ike riding a bicycle, but it was great to be up again, and like you a bit of slaloming.

Nice Ned L ! Glad to see people still getting after it even with a long break.

Speaking of which, I got invited to go camping out near Basalt, CO and took off at 6am to join my friend with his boat. Nice relaxing weekend but no boat work of my own.. Its a blessing and a curse to have so much adventuring to do out here. Wednesday Thursday I plan on getting a lot done.

Also, does anyone have any advice on the exhaust port replacement? Looking for advice on where/what to get.

Austin, been reading you posts and have enjoyed watching the progress. Some disagree wit your angle iron approach but I agree in your logic. When installing heavy manufacturing equipment, the pads are always grouted, not for bonding but for a solid base which also spreads the load. CorrectCraft also used steel frames under their engines as was mentioned. I like the approach and may do the same on my future project. Regarding the exhaust outlets, the model you referenced looks nice and clean, it would update the look of the boat as well. If you want a more traditional look, I found some used ones for both my boats on the CorrectCraft group, someone is always parting out something. Keep up the great work!

always liked ski boats mainly because they were inboards and i see nothing wrong with the metal for spreading the weight and torque :)

Hey Austin - hope you had a great 4th. I updated my thread with the details on the ACME 541. I love it! Boat pulls and drives like a dream. Got to ski a set yesterday morning before the family crowds arrived. I rode the new (to me) RADAR Theory. I like it. I'm going to keep skiing it even though I can't ski it as hard as my old ski. I'll keep after it for now. I'll take some pics and update my thread.

Thanks! I 100% understand the points made by some about the bond not being as good, but I think that doing load distribution will make up for that bonding weakness. Ive seen a majority of competition boats with angle iron for their mounts and if the newer boats are doing it, there must be an advantage. Even if its overkill and unnecessary.

The goal of this rebuild is to make it look nice, new, and professional. Im not trying to make it look like a 2018 model, not that I could even if I tried. But also not trying to restore it to its former glory, we will be putting the tower back on and doing gelcoat with SeaDek (or similar) instead of carpet. I will have to take a peek over there and check out if there is something I can find! If not, I think these will be good enough replacements, just wanted to get some opinions if anyone had something else in mind.

Thanks Mickey! Glad to have some support!

Although, as I keep saying, I really do enjoy when people challenge my thoughts/ideas. If I can be proved wrong, I would prefer to know before, rather than after I make a big decision.

Right on Tim! The 4th was really nice here, 85 and sunny all day. I spent it skiing in the AM before all the crazies got on the lake, and then spent the rest of it kayaking with my pup around the lake and hanging with friends on their boats. It drove me crazy to see others with their boats floating, with floors, seats, and not looking like a skeleton in a dusty garage lol soon enough we will be out next to them.

and I went over and check out your thread, still so impressed with the finish of that boat. You really did a fantastic job. And glad to hear the prop change was such a big positive improvement!

Cant wait to see updates on the new Theory. What do you mean by you cant ski it as hard? Just that its slower through the turns? or behind the boat?
