Re: 1986 Campion bowrider restoration

Installed the tank today.
I mixed one quart of foam and pour a wide bead where the tank will sit. I placed the tank down and held it there while the foam worked it self around. Next I secured the tank with hardware on each side and then mixed one more quart of foam to pour around the perimeter to fill in. Will have no choice but to trim a slight amount from the top as it came a bit too high.

I filled some knot voids in the deck parts and glassed 3 out of 5 of them. I had the garage temp about 75 but I also picked up this heater to help speed the curing. Worked pretty good.

Did you pre-coat the plywood prior to laying the mat?

Re: 1986 Campion bowrider restoration

There is no drain from the tank enclosure. I was trying to keep it water tight when I'm done. Would there be any benefit to making a drainage point now that it is foamed in? Say the tank did spring a leak on the opposite end of the drain hole. Wouldn't the foam have to be completely saturated with fuel before it started to leak out?

Thanks

Ya I guess the foam would have to be pretty wet with fuel like you said....hence why I did what I did. First sign of a leak and I would smell it in the bilge. Some guys like to foam in the tank and others like to keep it so air can circulate around it. I went with the advice of the pros on here..... My tank had foam around it from the factory.....every spot that water got in between the tank and foam was pitted....I guess if you can keep all the water out of there you'll be ok

Yep, you bet WOG... Every piece. I mix enough resin to coat the wood then make more up for when I lay the mat down.

Funny, so did I and now my tank is foamed in. Good things and bad with either way I think. I'm happier it's foamed in and secured that way. I think I can remove the cap to the tank fittings once or twice per season and inspect. Should be able to smell right away if there is a leak with the fittings exposed.

Really getting pumped about trying this boat out . I want to be able to test it out by April 1st. I have bellows kits, gimble bearing and shifter cable on route from ebay. All other seals, thermostat, impeller, etc... Gel coat purchased for the outer transom flattening ordeal. Also am going to Gel goat the bildge area and ski locker area + front bow storage compartments. I would like to carpet this boat. All the wood in the seats and engine cover need replacing plus some may need new ones made. The hull and cap need a good cleaning and polishing and hopefully I'll be good to go.

Sounds more like May 1st  but we'll see.

Re: 1986 Campion bowrider restoration

Installed 3 of 5 deck pieces today. Pre-drilled all holes and forced 5200 in them and coated screws. Glassed on cleats so that the joints could be secured extra strong. All went well, still working on the ski locker piece as I'm glassing wood under it so there is a 3/4" lip for my locker door to sit on. Would have been easier to just buy an aluminum frame with door but I wanted to make my own with some nice hardwood.

Re: 1986 Campion bowrider restoration

Was nice outside so while some resin was curing in the garage I started to make the front bow seating/storage area.

Old one

Needed to trace what I could and fill in the blanks!

DSCF2708_zpsaa1c13fb.jpg

This should be enough to start with so I can test fit the rest of the parts when the deck is complete.

Re: 1986 Campion bowrider restoration

Quick update,

Got the new deck all laid in.
DSCF2711_zps24b8c2c2.jpg

Motor mount is in, needs more PB under it as it is "floating" right now and to be glassed to the stringers.

Cut the rest of the pieces for the front bow seating/storage area.

Old one never had any glass or gelcoat or nothing on the inside? Still lasted 27 years so mine should last 72!

Re: 1986 Campion bowrider restoration

I glued and tacked the piece together with brads for now.

I'll leave it like this overnight for the glue to dry before making some adjustment with the grinder.

I cant put the last two pieces on yet or it wont fit into place since the boat cap is still on.

VERY nice work on the bow carpentry. Those of us that have done it, know what a pain fitting all that stuff can be!

Re: 1986 Campion bowrider restoration

Only have Sunday off this week and was able to spend about 6 hours on a few things.
Mostly got all the fillets ready around the perimeter of the new deck to prepare for tabbing.

Nothing too exciting
DSCF2736_zps313c6893.jpg

Was cutting some CSM 4" and 5" strips. I measured out some markers so I cut cut three at a time with a straight edge.

Couldn't get these screws loose
DSCF2728_zpsa905fcb4.jpg

Had to use some penetrating spray.
DONT TRY THIS AT HOME!!! It's for professional use only

They did come off after soaking for ten minutes or so. I made a label for them.

Most everything was labeled last fall during dis-assembly.

Re: 1986 Campion bowrider restoration

Best part today was that I got to pour foam into the deck. I used one 8 cubic foot kit and just had enough for foam to come up to all the holes I made. I'm happy with the results.
