Thanks Mullin, I tend to agree, the paint makes it look 100x better.

Took care of an annoying little detail today:

Nick mine is quiet when rotating it in either direction. There is a small amount of that if you rock it back and fourth. That is just backlash and is normal.
Nice. You look like you are going to beat me to the splash down.:bounce:

Hats off to you Nickypoo! You are an inspiration to us all! I am finally tackling my project that needs about everything rebuilt or replaced. I had it on the backburner for 2 years now, shame on me I know. But after my compression check, and seeing the motor had such low compression in the back 2 of 4, I lost momentum due to finances, But I am selling my cycle for funds, and no more weeds are gonna grow up around my baby! Gonna Git er done, and start my own thread I guess. Wish me luck, and great job by the way!

Hey fastryker thanks, best of luck to you on your project! I'll look forward to seeing your resto thread.

Allbutwet: Thanks for the reply. I made a video of the sound in the lower unit and I will be posting it here as soon as it's done processing. And I hope it's not too soon that I'll be able to take it out, but judging from your progress I'm not confident that I'll be first! There's still a lot of interior work to be done.

Here's a video of the engine running with the outdrive on today. It took a while to start since it's been sitting so long with gas in it, but it cleared out. Notice when I take the heat exchanger cap off there's water flowing through there :D (that was the main problem before I took the outdrive apart).

And guys, what's the deal with that "lub lub lub" exhaust sound? It almost sounds like a 350 Chevy idling. Does this indicate uneven compression or is that just how the B21 sounds?

Here's the video of the noise in the lower unit. This stresses me out. I really don't want to go back digging in the outdrive, even if it's just removing the propeller shaft.

Nick,
That sounds like your gear mesh is to tight. Did you have shims left over? Sorry I know you didn't want to hear that. Did you post this in the Volvo forum?

You may not have to crack open the gears, but you may want to drop the lower and check that you have a postive preload within tolerances. Then pull the upper unit and check for a nuetral to slightly negative preload. Im guessing that since you had a good lash pattern on the lower, but a questionable lash print on the upper, that that may be the problem area. You should take like 10 measurements with the micrometers, and use the median, not the average. Since you gutted them to paint, just putting the shims back in may not have held tolerance.

I bleive the back and forth click is good, but not the grinding noise.

Just a thought.

Well, looks like I'll be digging back in there. Bleh. Thanks for the input.

Zool, the noise is definitely coming from the gears in the lower, not the upper. It makes this noise when it's in neutral, when the upper gears don't move. Also I had the engine running and there weren't any noises coming from the upper gearbox. I put my ear against it to make sure and it sounded

I think you're probably right about the paint. Even though the mesh pattern looked good, I still suspect the propeller shaft because there is a good layer of paint in between the shaft collar and the lower housing. That propeller shaft collar isn't flush with the lower housing. It sticks out a good 1/16 inch (estimating). Anyway, I think I'll pull the propeller shaft and check the pattern again.

Good news guys, that's exactly what it was. I pulled the propeller shaft and removed the paint from both mating surfaces. When I put it back together the noise went away. I could reproduce the noise by leaving a small gap in between the lower housing and the propeller shaft collar.

Those were the only two surfaces I ignored the paint on, so I think it should be good everywhere else.

I was too bummed to post this yesterday, but I got a lot done on the trailer and registration.

Replaced the hubs with new ones (Rusted pretty bad):

Mounted the wheels and tires I picked up a while back:
IMG_4500.jpg

Moved the fenders up and bent them out because the wheels are larger than the old ones:
IMG_4505.jpg

Installed new trailer lights:

Put new CF number stickers on and applied the registration sticker:

I also picked up the new CA permanent trailer licence plate today after getting the VIN verified.

Good to hear. ...these drives are bulletproof when kept within tolerances, but eat themselves up when not.

Hi madridbruce, thanks a lot. I put a lot of effort into that engine so it's good to hear positive comments.

Zool, I'm hoping it won't eat itself alive. Everything seems ok now, I had it running in a tub of water with the propeller on and put it in forward and reverse a few times. No problems there. Splashed a lot of water around. It's not making any funny noises but I know it won't necessarily do anything strange until it wears a little bit. So... we shall see. Planning a water run tomorrow! Nervous :cower:

I'll update my progress...

I think I did something unique for my dual bilge pumps (Redundancy: I DO NOT want a sunken boat ). I'm not a fan of the glassed in piece of wood that was there before for the bilge pump to screw into. Instead, I bought a piece of Lexan from Home Depot for $4. I then laid out my pumps and switches on it and drilled the mounting holes:

IMG_4515.jpg

I clamped it between two pieces of wood and used a torch to carefully heat it until I could bend the panel. I did this for both sides:

IMG_4518.jpg

Then I mounted the bases and used 3M 5200 to glue it in place at the bottom of my bilge:

IMG_4521.jpg

After the 5200 cured I snapped everything in place and hooked it all up:

IMG_4526.jpg

It seems pretty solid. I tried to wiggle the base around a little bit with a good amount of force and it didn't want to move. I didn't get the angle of the bent portion exactly conforming to the bottom of my hull, I think it would have helped if it was closer. Overall it turned out well.

Oh yeah, installed the through-hull fittings:

I also temporarily setup the throttle control:

I did this so I can water test it tomorrow morning. Hopefully everything goes well!

Re: 1984 Bayliner Capr 1950i, Volvo Penta AQ125A Resto

Well... It was quite a little adventure.

I went to a little estuary that breaks away from the main SF bay. The tide was really low. Yes, this truck is butt ugly and it ruins the picture...

IMG_4542re.jpg

Now I dunked it in and tried to start the engine... "Click click click". What? I was sure the battery was charged. Found out within a few seconds that the starter wire came off the solenoid. Don't know how that happened but it figures something like that would happen even though it was working perfectly fine back at home.

I got the engine running and let it warm up a little bit before I left the dock.

IMG_4544.jpg

I was really paying attention to the way the engine and outdrive sounded. The engine was making a weird buzzing/clicking noise at first (I'm certain it was coming from one of the accessories. The alternator or something) but that went away after a few minutes. Otherwise I'm not very convinced that it sounded the way it should have. It had a harsh sound to it. Maybe I'm being paranoid.

Anyway, I idled around near the dock for a minute and then tried to head out in the direction of the Bay.

IMG_4546re.jpg

I started hearing some noise so I stopped. Turns out I got stuck in some mud and the outdrive was buried. I tried to put it in gear but the engine died. I tilted the drive up and backed out where I thought it was clear. I put the drive down and gunned it. Then there was this terrible CLUNK GRIND noise from the back. So I killed the engine and determined I was still stuck. I thought maybe I blew the outdrive but I tilted it back up and it seemed like it was still working. I struggled for a good 5-10 minutes getting out of there but I finally made it back and the drive was working. What a PITA!!! Stupid low tide.

So back out in clear water, I felt around on the propeller and that sucker felt bent pretty bad. At least I determined what the noise was.

I still drove around a little bit with that bent prop. Here's a video of it getting on plane:

I don't know, how do you guys think it sounds? There's a really strange noise right at about 18 seconds in the video.

The carburetor needs to be tuned or something. It dies out right off idle, but if I make it out of that spot it runs ok.

I forgot to post pics of the prop.

How much would it cost to get this straightened? If I don't do it myself.
