So yesterday and today I finally got started on painting the outdrive.

First I pressure washed all the pieces to get the sandblast dust off:

Then cleaned them with alumiprep:

This is the alodine I used to convert the aluminum surface:

After alodine. Surfaces are yellowish:

Looking good Nick!:) On your side panels if they are like mine they just hang loose at the bottom. Sorry I haven't been on here much. Your seats look great.

Thanks for the reply Allbutwet. I thought that's how they went in but it didn't seem right for some reason. I just needed a little reassurance I guess. Now I can start making the side panels.

Nick, Thanks for the thread on your restoration. Thanks again also on the info for pulling my AQ125. You are so correct on a free boat is never free. Mine is identical, but thankfully not as rough.

Wow! You are one ambitious guy Nick!

I just found this thread in your sig from another post. It's looking really good, and that motor is damn sexy!

I need to take some new/updated pics but my boat is in my sig and looks like a twin of what yours started off as.

Looks like you might be hitting the water pretty soon with this boat.

No problem, hopefully you got the engine and drive out ok. Good luck on your project.

Ambitious, or stupid, I haven't figured that out yet! Thanks for the euphemism, lol!

Thanks for the compliments. You know, I found the pictures of your boat that you posted a while back, and saved the pictures in my "Boat" file on my computer as an example. I think I did a google search on "Bayliner Capri 1950" or something. The files on my computer were created April 2012, so almost exactly a year ago I saw them. I especially liked the back platform and I wanted to do something like that myself. Is that something you put on?

Otherwise those pictures were helpful as inspiration for a clean and complete interior. Not everything was complete when I got the boat and I have since thrown all the old stuff away, so it's nice to have as many references as I can.

That's a nice boat you have there!

So for an update, I have begun assembling the outdrive. Now I'm stuck on the upper gear unit, which I posted about here.

I forgot to mention this, but I used this marine version of JB weld to fill areas that were pitted from corrosion. I found this at the auto parts store.

Here is a close up of the upper gear unit housing. Notice how I painted a small portion around the perimeter of each mating face. This was a bad decision. The paint was built up thick enough to where it would cause the faces to not meet close enough. I used a gasket scraper and removed all the paint from every face. I then used 5200 sealant on the faces to prevent corrosion.

Here is a picture of the completed portion of the drive. Some of the paint needs to be cleaned and touched up, but otherwise this part is complete.

IMG_4378.jpg

I will need to paint the transom plate at some point too. That will be next once the outdrive is 100% complete. This will just be a quick cover-up spray to make it look pretty. The original epoxy paint seems ok.

Hey nicky, that looks good from here, how did the finish lay up?..Im doing a pair of 290's but Im using dx533 and dx503 (ppg) prolly the same as alodine and alumaprep, just a different lable ;).....I was planning on filling gouges with 3m metal to metal and the factory spray bombs from marinepartsexpress, like 12 bux a can and the oem factory finish. The jb weld looks like maybe a better idea than the 3m....but im wondering how it faired out.....

Hi zool,

I can't comment on the 3M metal to metal, but knowing 3M it's probably good stuff. The JB weld turned out to be really easy to use in this application. It worked perfect to fill holes and even build out the exhaust flange on the intermediate housing that got eaten away quite a bit. I've always had good experiences with JB weld. i can't even tell where I used it after the first coat.

I used a two-part Pettit epoxy for the the primer. I was really impressed by the two-part performance compared to regular paints. It's way more durable than anything I've used.

The finish coat was just a one-part interlux anti-fouling bottom paint. I wasn't very impressed with it. It looks good enough, but it chips way too easily. Perhaps that's just because of the way I applied it, I don't know. It's frustrating when I assemble it and the paint chips off at the edges.

Overall I painted a lot of places that I shouldn't have. I've been spending a good amount of time in paint removal, namely on the mating surfaces and threaded holes. Usually when I paint over threads it doesn't cause a problem. Not with this paint. I had to chase all the holes with a tap.

Yea, the anti foul on mine is peeling/chipping everywhere....thats why this time im gonna try the antifoul clear, over the oem.....hopefully it gives a nice sheen and keeps the crap off.....I have the same issue on my lowers, being slightly eaten away...I may try the jb on my parts drive to see how it works,,,,,the metal to metal is just filler with aluminum shavings in it...we'll see i guess

Thanks and good luck with your project..you're way ahead of me lol...

Nick, It is looking good, glad you are covering some of these issues before I get to them. I unfortunately did not make my time line on pulling the engine. I had a set back on putting together an engine hoist to pull the engine out and get it high enough to clear the gunnel. Therefore I spent last weekend assembling a work area and overbuilding an area to pull the engine. One step forward, and two back. I am planning once again to try for this coming weekend due to rain this week.

Definately looking to this thread as a reference when I rebuild my 280 drive.

 That's crazy you found my pics like that.

I'm told that the original owner of my boat was an avid skier and had the swim-platform custom made along with the custom rope tie many years ago. I did see that these guys make one for the 1950, no idea on their pricing though: Swimplatforms.com

Hey since you are building your interior virtually from scratch, try to include something like this:
312398_p_t_640x480_image23.jpg
I cut out a rectangle of plexiglass and just slide it in there behind the front cusions but in front of the windshield. It's AMAZING on a cold windy day!

Your Boat looks identical to the one I am working on! Thank you for posting your work. I can learn a lot from it.

So any updates Nick?

Did you ever get that upper gear box shimmed up and installed?

Re: 1984 Bayliner Capr 1950i, Volvo Penta AQ125A Resto

Well, as a matter of fact I've been working on it the past few days since Saturday.

I can say that while the upper is installed, the "shimmed up" part I'm not so confident in. I got the mesh pattern to look close to what it shows in the manual, but the shape is not oval and the contact area seems fairly large. It is centered on the tooth, and everything turns smoothly, so I just put it together. Hopefully it doesn't explode :disturbed:.

I have one question though. I thought my shimming in the lower was solid. The gear mesh pattern looked exactly like the manual. But when I had everything together today with it in neutral, I could still hear a faint "tink tink tink tink" noise like the teeth are clinking into each other as I turned the propeller shaft, even with oil in it. I thought this noise would go away completely. It is very faint and the shaft turns freely. Does anyone else experience this noise on your drive by turning the propeller shaft by hand?

Well here it is. At least it looks better, and should be able to suck up water now. I painted the transom shield and it looks remarkably good compared to what it used to look like.

Wow, your painted parts always look so nice!

Hopefully it doesn't explode .
Haha! I think the same thing everytime I go flying down the lake and look down and see my rpms well past 5000.

I'll see if I can hear anything when turning the prop, it won't be 'til later when I get home.
